    Description

Hey, Workawayers! We present to you an opportunity to come and volunteer in a new hostel in the heart of Jacó, Costa Rica! Here you will find a laidback, friendly and musical atmosphere, within 50 meters (150ft) of one of Costa Rica's best surfing beaches.

    About us -

Hi! I'm William! I feel like the luckiest person in the world being able to run a hostel here in Jacó. I'm originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA and I came to Costa Rica 4 years ago and decided to have a go at teaching English. Four years later I stumbled upon the opportunity to start a hostel! It has been a dream of mine for a long time.

Our team so far consists of myself, Claudia, Eliezer and Oscar, all 3 of whom are from Nicaragua! We also have a solid multicultural group of friends helping us along the way. We are very excited to have some volunteers come and join the team!

A little about the place -

when you first arrive at our space, you will pass through the bar/communal area and reception. We have a lot of plans in the making to host events in this space starting later in the year including salsa, reggae and house music nights, live music, and open mic! We have plenty of music equipment to jam on for any musicians out there. Continuing through the property, you will stroll by 10 of our guest rooms, both private (1st floor) and dormitory (second floor), and arrive at the pool area. Behind the pool area, further into the property, you will find the kitchen, a small dorm, dining area and the volunteer living area. The hostel can house about 50 guests at max capacity.

The goal of this hostel is to create a comfortable, inclusive, smile-inducing atmosphere where staff, volunteers and clients can be themselves and create a strong, loving community. An eventual goal for the hostel is to help our local friends out by selling their locally made products to guests and the public. We would also like to incorporate healthy food options, selections of vegan and gluten free options for food and snacks, and we would love to go as eco-friendly as possible as we grow.

April 2022 update - We have not added a full time food option yet for guests, but the bar is now in full swing as the covid restrictions have mostly ended in Jacó. We are in the process of planning event nights and we are currently hosting parties, with a DJ, on Tuesday and Friday nights, and we've added an open mic night!

We have employees at the hostel who would love to practice English! There could be a language exchange for anyone interested in learning Spanish. There are also plenty of people in Jacó who would love to do a language exchange.

While at the hostel you will meet people from all over the world, including many ticos (Costa Ricans) who love to go to the beach on the weekends.

The available positions for volunteers will evolve as time goes on, but for now -

** Placing a high priority on people with a solid foundation in Spanish - enough to check someone into the hotel **

** Priority is given to those who can spend 6 weeks or more at the hostel. **

    The help -

The help will be split between these tasks, from highest priority to lowest --> Reception (hostel tours, giving info, checking in and out) --> Cleaning --> Art projects --> Running errands

Reception, guest relations and cleaning - The help at the reception desk is straightforward - greeting guests, checking them in, giving a tour of the hostel if necessary, and doing any necessary cleaning of the front of the hostel during down time. A basic knowledge of our hostel management system will be taught so the volunteer can use our tablet to check people in. We want to be a hub of information about Jacó and nearby areas, so this person will learn a lot about what is available to guests like activities, tours, places to go, etc. No previous Costa Rican travel experience or knowledge necessary.

    The living arrangement -

As a volunteer here you will be living in the volunteer room located at the back of the property. We have space for 6 volunteers who will share a living space. In this living space are two bunk beds and a private bathroom for the volunteers. You will have access to all of the hostels facilities just as a guest would. You will also be provided with breakfast.

    Outside Area:

While you're staying here, and when you aren't doing volunteering tasks, you have the beach just a quick walk away. It is an excellent beach for beginner and intermediate surfers and sometimes even advanced surfers, depending on the swell. Playa Hermosa, a world renowned, advanced surfing beach, is just 15 minutes away by car. So go to the beach and surf, get your tan on, run, meditate, or whatever you're into! You have around 3 km (2ish miles) of beach to work with! On either side of the beach, and behind Jacó, there are several places to get into nature. The famous mirador hike will take you up to an abandoned, mural-covered hotel in the jungle. On this hike it is possible to see sloths, monkeys, macaws, toucans, blue morpho butterflies, and other amazing Costa Rican animals.

Running parallel to the beach is the main road of Jacó (Pastor Diaz Ave). Here, especially during the weekend, you will find a buzzing, high energy stretch of road with all of your essentials - Pharmacy (100 meters), Grocery store (150 meters), Banks and ATMS (100 meters), tons of great restaurants and bars, coffee shops, and more! Plenty of opportunities to volunteer and do things like beach cleans, help teach English, etc.

Great bus transportation available to most of Costa Rica's gems.
