Description
Welcome to Varangerbotn in Northern Norway!
Hi, my name is Ragne. I grew up in a Sámi reindeer herding family, and today I have a small private reindeer sanctuary where I look after a few animals that need special care. The sanctuary is not a business, and Workawayers do not take part in animal work — but you are, of course, welcome to see and learn about reindeer and Sámi traditions during your stay. 🦌
I also share my life with two Australian Shepherds and a Siberian Husky, so you should like dogs if you come here 🐾
I work part-time as a nurse at a local hospital, so sometimes you will have quiet time on your own. Guests usually stay either in a small separate house (with bedroom and bathroom), or in my home where you will have your own room.
What kind of help do I need?
I’m looking for general household and light maintenance help, depending on the season. No professional skills are required – just a positive attitude and willingness to help.
Examples of tasks:
- Simple maintenance help around the house and yard
- Helping in the garden
- Cutting and stacking firewood
- Painting and small home improvement projects
- Clearing snow in winter
- Picking berries in autumn
SEASONS
May–July: Midnight sun, outdoor maintenance, gardening, painting
August–September: Berry picking, preparing firewood, small repairs
October–April: Snow, short days (or polar night), snow shoveling, cozy indoor projects
Please note: We have 24-hour daylight in summer and polar nights with extreme cold in winter – a very unique Arctic experience ❄️☀️
WHAT I OFFER
- A warm welcome into my home and Sámi culture
- Your own room (or a small separate house if available)
- Home-cooked meals and shared everyday life in the far north
- An opportunity to learn about Sámi traditions, nature, and Arctic life
WHAT I ASK FROM YOU
- A friendly, flexible and independent spirit
- Willingness to help 4–5 hours a day, 5 days a week
- Be comfortable spending some time on your own when I’m at work
- Non-smokers preferred
- Driving license is useful but not essential
When you write to me, please tell me a little about yourself, where you come from, why you’d like to visit Northern Norway, and what kind of experience you’d like to have here.
This is not a business – it’s my home, my animals, and my life. You will become part of the daily rhythm, help a little, learn something new, and hopefully leave with good memories of the north, the dogs, the northern lights or the midnight sun, and a feeling of connection to nature.

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
Staying here is about experiencing daily life in the north and getting an authentic glimpse into Sámi traditions and Arctic nature.
You may have the chance to see the reindeer and learn about them through stories and observation, but you will not be helping with animal care.
For me, the most important part is cultural exchange – sharing stories, food, and daily life. In return for your help with simple household and maintenance tasks, I hope you’ll take home a deeper understanding of life and culture in Sápmi.

What kind of fit best here?
Life here in the north can be physical at times – chopping wood, fixing things outside – so it’s an advantage if you like using your hands and being outdoors.
Tasks can change with the weather and seasons – that’s part of Arctic life – so I ask that you stay flexible and open to variety.

I spend 3 weeks during June with Ragne and her dogs and the time flew by way to fast! I enjoyed every single second and was planning to come back even before I left. With Ragne you will have a super sympathic, humorous and honest host. I felt welcomed from the first second. For… read more

We spent five weeks with Ragne, the reindeer, the huskies and the australians sheperds. Our job was to feed the animals, to train some of the reindeer and to do some work around the house, but honestly it didn't feel like work since the animals were really nice, fun and friendly. This was my first workaway experience and Ragne set the bar very high. I had the most incredible two months during August and September 2019. I initially only planned to stay for one, but it was working so well for both of us that I decided to stay for a second and to return in winter next year!
