    Description

This is a kennel of 40 purebreed Siberian Huskies, 3 Australian Shepherds and some reindeer. The kennel is located in Varangerbotn/Vesterelv, Nesseby Municipality in North Norway.

Ragne is grown up in a Sami familiy with thousands of reindeer. The big herd of reindeer are up in the mountains the whole year around, but Ragne has a few reindeer at home in a fenced area in winter time. This might be reindeer that need special care due to different reasons.

In this period, the sun never sets, and you can experience up to 24 hours of sunlight - the midnight sun. It is "daylight" all night long, be aware :). It might be challenging to take care of dogs for other people because these are often dogs that are not used with beeing away from their home.

THE HELP IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2020
    - Feeding and watering dogs
    - Cleaning dog yards
    - Walking and socialization of puppies
    - Fencing (Fixing dogfences, reindeer fences etc)
    - Painting
    - Help with building (A carpenterer would be great!:)
    - Cutting trees, make firewood
    - Helping out in the garden
    - Help with training the dogs with a training cart/ATV. In august we start training the dogs about 5-10 km per trip, and we are increasing the distance of training to about 20-30 km in september.
    - Picking berries. August is a great time of year to pick arctic cloud berries, which are DELICIOUS! We pick lots of them and make jam for the year. September is the best time of year to pick lingonberries and make lingonberry jam, which is AMAZING with the reindeer meat!
    - General housework, cleaning
    - Cooking

    IMPORTANT:
Please note that we will probably be slaughtering some reindeer in september. You will NOT be asked to kill any reindeer, but after taking the meat back home, we will need to cut it down into smaller chunks that we can easily pull out of the freezer to eat. You will be expected to help cut down the meat.

In october the trips with the dogs are about 20 km, and we are increasing the distance of training every month.. If you wanna take part in the dog-training, we EXPECT you to take part in ALL the dog-training, not only the "sunny-days". It means that the training days are LONG, sometimes hard in tough weather, and it will be much more than 5-hour days.

From november until middle of january we have complete darkness. The days will be long and it can reach -40 degrees Celcius.

Please also note that we will be slaughtering some reindeer. You will NOT be asked to kill any reindeer, but we will skin and butcher reindeer, and may ask for some help with this. Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

You will learn about huskies, their behavour, dogsledding, dog-care, dog-racing, reindeer and also about the sami people (the Indigenous people living in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia), culture, history, and language. We hope that you will take away new knowledge of what it's like to be part of traditions that are thousands of years old.

Here are a lot of opportunities, and what you learn depends on how active, motivated and receptive you are, and what time of the year you are coming here.

Please notice that our work and schedules will often change due to weather and animals, and we expect you to be 100% flexible with changing help schedules and days off. This is NOT a 9-5 job!

Please notice that our house and dog-kennel is located in the forest with no next door neighbors, outside a small town, and you won't have a lot of transport possibilities. If you like to be around a lot of people all the time, this is not the correct place for you. If you are not in balance with yourself, it might be too isolated for you here.

    Autres infos...

We are remote, with only 900 inhabitants in the entire municipality. There is a village 5km away with a restaurant and bar, musem and a few other things. It is possible to get a bus to the nearby towns, but the busroutes are limited. Tana Bru is 20km away, Vadsø 55km and Kirkenes 120km. These places have amenities like cinemas, pubs, shopping centres etc.

The nearest airports are Kirkenes and Vadsø, although it is probably cheaper and more convenient to fly to Kirkenes. You will have to catch the bus from Kirkenes to Varangerbotn to come here. The bus routes you can find at Snelandia.
