    Description

We live off-grid in a land coop on the Wheaton River where we grow our own food, as well as medicinal plants for the apothecary. Our immediate neighbor has sheep and farm birds who roam around the shared areas. From May through September, we prepare most of our meals outside in the summer kitchen and spend our time working in the gardens and wild-harvesting on the property, enjoying stunning views of Gray Ridge and Red Ridge.

My partner and I run a small fermentary and apothecary. We share our passion for fermentation and wild edible/medicinal plants with the public and teach plant walks, fermentation workshops, as well as herbal preparation workshops. We will be happy to teach these skills to our guests in exchange for their help on the property! Note: guests won't be helping run these activities but could participate for free if we teach workshops during their stay. More details about our workshops here: nomadicharvests.com/learn.

We offer our guests to stay in the rustic River Cabin. There is also a parking spot for a van or camper next to an outhouse on the property, as well as numerous camping spots in the woods and on the river nearby, if guests prefer to camp. The River Cabin is on the banks of the Wheaton River and has its own outhouse. The cabin can accommodate 3 persons. It's a dry cabin, i.e. water jugs can be filled in the house for drinking and washing and the sink drains into a grey water pit. On cool nights, the cabin can be heated with a woodstove. There is a propane burner to heat up water and cook simple meals. Breakfast fixings will be provided but prepared by guests on their own time. Lunch will be prepared by us and eaten together in the summer kitchen. Guests are invited to join us for dinner in the summer kitchen if they wish. Their help to prepare dinner is appreciated but not required. If they prefer to retire for the day, they can also cook their own food in the cabin for dinner. Note that guests are expected to supplement with their own food for special dietary restrictions or preferences. The cabin does not have electricity yet, nor internet reception. Guests can charge their devices and use the internet in the house between 4-6 pm. For lights, the cabin has candles, an oil lamp and a propane lamp (although it is light most of the summer late into the night!) A generator can be hooked up for extra power if needed. Please note that there is no cell phone reception past the Annie Lake Road cut off. We have a landline in the house for guests use. For bathing, there is a sauna on the property that we can be fired up once a week, and coin showers at the Community Centre (Annie Lake Road cut off). In the summer, we also bathe in the river or the lake.

Having your own vehicle is an asset. The property is remote: 60 kilometres from downtown Whitehorse with easy hitchhiking from downtown Whitehorse to the Annie Lake Road cut off in the Hamlet of Mount Lorne. After the cut off, our place is another 22 km of gravel road, with limited traffic. With a vehicle, guests can commute to town as they need and explore the Southern Lakes Region, the town of Carcross, as well as beautiful hikes in that area. Annie Lake is only a 10 minutes drive from our place, with a trail that goes around the lake and a great spot for bird watching. The hamlet of Mount Lorne is renowned for its thriving community of homesteaders, and the Community Centre at the Annie Lake Road cut off offers fun activities so you don't need to drive all the way to town for concerts or a yoga class! For guests who don't have a vehicle, we offer rides to and from town once or twice a week and guests are welcome to join us on outings. Our place is beautiful to explore on foot as well. Easy hiking trails, stunning views from a bluff and a nice beach on the river less than 10 minutes walk from the gardens!
