    Description

Jason and Brett are a married couple hosting on a working rural property in the Northern Rivers, NSW. This is a hands-on, physically active Workaway, the land is steep and uneven in parts, and most days involve outdoor manual work rather than light gardening or indoor help.

We love hosting people who are practical, curious, and happy to learn. If you want to build real hands-on skills, take responsibility, and feel proud of tangible results at the end of the day, you’ll fit in well here.

Typical tasks include brush cutting and clearing, fencing and track maintenance, basic construction and repairs, and using power tools and farm equipment (or learning safely with guidance). You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness, common sense, and comfort working outside in heat, rain, mud, and bugs.

Travellers staying with us experience day-to-day life on a working rural property in Australia, where practical problem-solving, adaptability, and hands-on skills are part of everyday life.

You’ll learn how we approach outdoor work, maintenance, and construction tasks in real conditions, including safe tool use, planning physical work, and taking responsibility for seeing jobs through. The focus is on learning by doing and building confidence through practical experience.

Alongside the work, we’re a friendly, easygoing household. We enjoy working together, chatting while getting things done, and sharing the occasional meal or conversation at the end of the day. The dynamic suits people who value both independence and straightforward, good-humoured connection without the need for constant socialising.

    Aide

The help we need is primarily outdoor, physical, hands-on work on a working rural property. (This is not light gardening or domestic help.)

Tasks commonly include brush cutting and clearing, maintaining bush tracks, fencing, post-hole digging, basic construction and repairs, lifting and carrying materials, and general property maintenance. Power tools and farm equipment are used regularly. Experience is helpful but not essential if you’re practical, attentive, and willing to learn safely.

Much of the work happens on uneven, sloped ground and in changing weather conditions. A reasonable level of fitness, strength, and stamina is important, as is the ability to work independently once shown the basics.

We particularly enjoy hosting people who want to build real, transferable practical skills, take responsibility for tasks, and see clear, tangible results from their work by the end of their stay.

This Workaway is probably not a good fit if you’re mainly looking for childcare, hospitality, reception-style tasks, or primarily indoor work. It’s also not suited to people seeking a retreat-style experience, lots of downtime, or close daily supervision.

The work here is physical, outdoors, and practical. We’re best suited to people who are comfortable getting dirty, using tools, and taking responsibility for real tasks rather than support-style roles.

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

Depending on the length of stay and what projects we’re working on, accommodation is either in a self-contained cabin or a comfortable private room in the main house.

The cabin is around 40 m², private, and fully equipped with its own kitchen, bathroom (including composting toilet), washing machine, and wood heater.

When the cabin isn’t available, we offer a private guest room in the house with your own separate area, plus shared use of our kitchen, living room, and bathroom.

Both options are clean, comfortable, and quiet, and suited to independent travellers who are happy to manage their own routines outside of work hours.

Our place is about a 45-minute drive inland from Byron Bay, surrounded by national parks, waterfalls, and some of the most beautiful bushwalks in the region. The closest village is Clunes (15 minutes), with Mullumbimby and Lismore each around 30 minutes away in opposite directions.

On your time off, you can explore local swimming holes, bushwalks, and lookouts right from the property. For helpers without a car, we’re happy to offer a lift into town when we’re heading in for supplies.

We enjoy a good life here with a focus on our property, practical projects, and shared meals when it suits. We keep things simple, with mutual respect, clear communication, and everyone pitching in to keep shared spaces tidy.

There’s no smoking in the house or cabin, and ideally you’re a non-smoker.

If we’re heading to something social locally, helpers are welcome to join us if it suits, but there’s no expectation to socialise outside of work hours.

When you apply, please tell us a bit about:
Any physical, outdoor, or hands-on work you’ve done before
Any tools, machinery, or equipment you’ve used (even at a basic level)
What practical skills you’re hoping to learn while you’re here
