Description
We are a 150 acre farm in the rolling, forested Gatineau Hills, 10 minutes from the vibrant, artsy Anglophone village of Wakefield, Quebec. There's a lot going on on our farm: maple syrup production, laying hens, fruit trees and berry bushes, outdoor mushroom cultivation, wild foraging, apple cider pressing, vegetable growing, outdoor pizza oven, special events, sheep, maybe horses in the near future...the list goes on. It's a beautiful area full of lakes, rivers, hardwood forests, meadows - with always something interesting going on in the local cultural scene.
We are two 50 something adults with two teenaged sons who live with us part time and a small dog. Sean farms full time and Abby works on bringing restorative justice into schools. We like to dance, canoe, cook, and share good times with friends.

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
We have a great community of people living at the farm. In addition to Sean and Abby, there are three tenants, one an older retired woman who is a dancer and massage therapist, and two younger men who are timber framers. There is also a young woman from Nigeria who grows vegetables, another woman who rents an art studio, and we're hoping some horse boarders will begin this summer. We also are aiming to hold regular events in our event space and large barn loft, including mushroom workshops and weddings.
Beyond our farm, there is always lots going on in Wakefield, 7km away, with a large weekly farmers' market, art galleries, bars, restaurants, festivals, films, music, and much more. 40 km away is the urban centre of Ottawa/Gatineau, with Parliament Hill, museums, and everything a city of one million has to offer. English is spoken in Wakefield and some other surrounding communities, and French is spoken in much of the larger region.
We are happy to teach you about cordwood building, gardening, and other farm skills.
We are simply hoping to meet some interesting people and learn about the places they are from.

Aide
The primary task you'll be doing is completing a sauna made with cordwood walls. Sean started this project in 2020 and it is still only half finished! He's realized he's too busy with farming and other projects and needs some help. He can show you everything you need to know to complete this project, but if you come into it with some construction experience, all the better.
Other projects could include helping in our large personal vegetable garden, cutting firewood, building trails in the forest, and helping implement our landscaping vision around the house.
We already have long-term employees who do the business work, so we don't need extra help in this department. You will only be doing help in our private spaces.

Hébergement
Sleeping will be in a tent. There are different locations available, depending on your preferences, including on a wooden platform on the edge of the woods. Tent and bedding provided. You will also have access to a shared indoor kitchen and bathroom, and large, sunny hangout space, when it is not in use (which currently is most of the time). You will also have access to the backyard, BBQ, fire pit, and cob oven. We can provide food from our farm, other local farms, and the grocery store. How much you cook for yourself versus take part in shared meals can be something we can work out with each individual on a case by case basis.

Autres infos...
There's lots to do in the area. Gatineau Park is just a few minutes away, with tons of trails, as well as lakes for swimming. There's mountain biking, bike trails, canoe and SUP rentals, camping, plus everything the rustic village of Wakefield or the urban metropolis of Ottawa/Gatineau has to offer. Sean's son is into fishing and can show you where to cast a line.
For transport, there's a good , inexpensive on-demand public transit system. We can also loan you a bike (Wakefield is about a 20 minute bike ride away) or give you rides when we're able.

We actually run a co-working group twice a week in our event space, so this fits in perfectly with what we're already doing. We have good high-speed internet. We're flexible with working this work into your other work schedule.

Espace pour garer des vans
We have electricity to several outbuildings, so there are a few options for where you could park for electrical hookup. If you're close to the house we could also offer potable water. We can't offer any sewage services, but we do have a couple of outhouses, as well as a full bathroom in the house you can use.
