We (Rory and Liz) are property developers and work from home so we are usually around for a chat. We like to laugh and have fun - life is too short not to! We love travelling (in a 'normal' year!) and hearing about other countries and cultures.
We live in a lovely village, an hour from London by train or car & 90 minutes drive from several seaside resorts including Brighton. Our nearest town is Farnham, a pretty Georgian market town. Our nearest City is Guildford which has a lot to offer.
NO SINGLE TRAVELLERS! PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY BEFORE APPLYING!
Come and spend the autumn/winter in Surrey oh and please don't apply if you are allergic to cats as Atticus our huge Siberian cat does like to 'adopt' our Workawayers and crash out on the sofa in Mable (the mobile home where you will be living) :-)
WE HAVE AVAILABILITY FOR AUTUM & WINTER. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU!
LOOKING FOR A COUPLE OR FRIENDS TO STAY
Love dogs? Chickens? Outdoor Projects? Great - please read on!
If you like being outside then this would be a great opportunity for you and your 'other half' or friend. We live in a an iconic village, a really beautiful part of Surrey, surrounded by countryside and our own 12 acres of garden/woodland and in any weather, it's absolutely GLORIOUS!
We have an organic vegetable garden and a wildflower meadow ( Where Mable is situated) and a woodland needing care. The veggie patch is Liz's hobby but she's very new to it all (it started as a lockdown project) so Liz is looking to learn more and also to extend it. We also have some longer term projects on the property.
We have an area that is very wild where we want to create a wildfowl pond starting in the autumn plus a courtyard garden and cute paths in the woodland.
We may ask you to use our ride on mower for the field & some general outdoor maintenance.
We have five dogs that love the attention of our Workawayers & we might ocassionally ask for you to walk them or feed them for us. Liz has been breeding dogs for over 20 years and is very keen on training - she is more than happy to share her knowledge. We have had many Workawayers who want to get a dog in the future and who have learnt a lot about general dog care whilst here. We like help to keep our house clean for a few hours once a week. We also have two furry cats (that tend to live outside) & 10 chickens! A love of animals is a MUST! Our dogs ADORE having Workawayers here :-)
We love hosting Workawayers and learning more about their lives and where they live. We invite you to dine with us one evening a week (because we are out on the other evenings) we do make a big effort that evening and it's like a little dinner party :-). Rory is a very good cook. Liz is vegetarian but mostly eats plant based food. We eat healthy food and use the veggies in our veggie patch when we can. We also have a good supply of free range eggs which we like to share.
We are around during the day and spend a lot of time chatting with our Workawayers often over a cup of tea. We have always built really good relationships with our Workawayers and stay in touch with them all.
We are within a short walk of two great pubs The Barley Mow pub on the cricket green (a leisurely ten minute stroll from us) and the Duke of Cambridge, which serves great food. We are also on the edge of a vast common which is wonderful for walking (we have dogs we can lend you!) or mountain biking (you will have your own mountain bikes to use). There are tennis courts at the end of the lane which can be available if you like to play.
This is quite a remote spot so bring someone who you get on well with, ha ha!
We look forward to hearing from you!
If you need to escape, our previous Workawayers have sussed out the local busses although if you have your own transport, that would be even better. We are of course happy to give a lift into Farnham or to the station to catch a train, our Workawayers often go away for the weekend from Friday mid afternoon to Sunday night to places such as Brighton, London or Oxford. Please note that this is country living! We have one village shop which is a 12 minute walk away - this is slow paced living but all the more lovely for it!

We can offer a real sense of space and tranquility rarely found these days. There is something quite magical about our place in the country :-)
We have really enjoyed having Workawayers for the past four years. We are widely travelled ourselves so love to chat about that along with the differences between our cultures.
What you can learn with us :
Rory is a successful businessman with some great tales about his time in the garden centre business.
We are property developers & Liz loves interior design, so we are happy to share our knowledge.
Learn about animal husbandry - dogs, cats, chickens.
If we have puppies, learn about raising a puppy from birth until it leaves here at 8 weeks and play an influential part of this critical time.
If we have puppies planned, learn about selecting a suitable partner and all the considerations that go into a pairing.
Liz has imported 9 dogs & imported frozen semen from all over the world - it's an interesting dinnertime subject LOL!
Learn about dogs and their behaviours and the various dog sports that Liz partakes in with her dogs. Liz likes dogs, ha ha.
Learn about our travels. rory has climbled Kilimanjaro, sailed two legs of the Round the World Yacht Race, trekked to Everest Base Camp and cycled to South of France and Paris, plus other trips.
Liz is also widely travelled although not quite so daringly although she did spend time living on the Tundra in Northern European Russia with the reindeer herders, studying their way of life & dogs, it was 7 hours by Monster Truck from any form of civilisation!
Pre Covid/lockdown we have in the past taken Workawayers on day trips to the seaside or the New Forest, StoneHenge or the cinema. We keep them advised of local events such as farmer's markets or food fayres, & take them with us if we are going.
We would love your help alongside us with some of these projects:
- Organic veggie patch
- Turning a derelict area of the garden into a wilfowl pond
- Clear some woodland and create a camp fire clearing with woody walks
We tend to use WhatsApp for communication when not face to face. It works well :-)
We can now offer accommodation in our beautiful & cosy mobile home - ‘Mable’, She has a double bedroom plus a second bedroom, an open plan living room with dining area fully kitted galley kitchen with oven hob and microwave, bathroom with toilet, basin & shower. She is double glazed with central heating. Good WiFi and TV. We have located Mable in a tranquil part of the grounds with no immediate neighbours - just you, the meadow, the foxes, the badgers and the birds oh and Atticus a lof of the time LOL!
There is a table and chairs for alfresco eating and a fire pit with a good stock of logs to enjoy the summer evenings.
It is your responsibility to keep Mable clean in your own time. There is a no smoking rule inside.
You are likely to get a visit from Atticus one of our cats, he's particularly partial to our Workawayers & Mabel:-)
Half your day will be spent doing tasks & the other half of the day is yours to explore the local area, go up to London or simply chill & do nothing. We are very flexible over hours. - if you want to juggle things so that you can have a three day weekend, that's fine with us. What I'm saying is that this experience is what you decide to make it - if you think it's luxury living then you will be disappointed , if you think it's something completely different - very rural, basic, heaps of nature, adoration by our animals, good food & lots of fun, then you won't be disappointed.
We hope we have given you a good flavour of what it is like here the good the bad and the ugly and hope you read the profile throughly, please quote Atticus in your email so we know you have, thank you.
We will ask you each week for a shopping list or drop you at a supermarket with some money so you can fetch your own groceries.
Hopefully we've covered everything but don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. It goes without saying that we want you to love animals as much as us and to fully appreciate this opportunity, you'll need outdoor boots, wet weather gear, be pretty fit, have a desire to be active and a sense of humour. A good standard of English both verbal and written is necesssary. Minimum stay is 5 weeks,. We may ask you to take a Covid test before your arrival.
We tend to find that this opportunity works best for Workawayers who have experienced the workplace and living independently. People who are used to following instruction, having responsibility and managing their own home.
Life skills basically - so that’s what we look for when selecting workawayers.
We look forward to hearing from you! 😬
