    Description

Hi! We’re Jakub (40) and Carola (34), an international couple living on a beautiful acreage in Carstairs, Alberta, with stunning mountain views and plenty of open space. We’re excited to welcome our first baby in June 2026 and are looking forward to sharing our home, lifestyle, and skills with like-minded people from around the world.

Our place is a peaceful rural setting with five horses and one friendly cat who lives in the house with us. Nature, fresh air, and wide skies are part of everyday life here, and it’s a great spot for anyone who enjoys animals, learning new skills, and a slower, more grounded pace of living.

Jakub is a skilled carpenter originally from the Czech Republic. He loves working with his hands and is happy to teach and share knowledge about building, woodworking, repairs, and general construction projects around the property. If you’re curious about how things are built—or enjoy practical, hands-on work—you’ll learn a lot from him.

Carola is originally from Germany and works as a professional horse trainer. She runs her business out of a large, beautiful training facility just down the road. Her focus is on starting young horses and practicing and teaching Liberty, with an emphasis on thoughtful, relationship-based training. Horse lovers or anyone curious about horsemanship will find this especially interesting.

We’ve both lived in Canada for over 10 years and feel very much at home here, while still valuing cultural exchange and meaningful connections. We enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, sharing meals, conversations, skills, and creating a positive, respectful environment where everyone feels welcome.

If you enjoy animals, learning new things, contributing to a family-oriented home, and living in a scenic rural setting, we’d love to hear from you!

    Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

Cultural exchange is very important to us, and we truly enjoy sharing both knowledge and lifestyle. Anyone staying with us will have the opportunity to learn as much as they want about horse training—there are no limits. From daily horse care to starting young horses and working with Liberty, we’re happy to share skills, experience, and insight, whether you’re a beginner or already experienced.

We also live as self-sufficiently as possible. We grow our own vegetables and eat our own hunted meat, and we love sharing what we’ve learned about food production, sustainable living, and making the most of rural life. If you’re curious about where your food comes from and how to live more independently, there’s a lot to learn here.

Beyond practical skills, we enjoy sharing what rural life in Canada is really like—living with horses, working with the land, and building a life outside the city. Having both come from Europe (Jakub from the Czech Republic and Carola from Germany) and having built our lives in Canada, we’re especially happy to share our experiences around immigrating, adapting to a new country, and creating a meaningful life abroad.

In return, we love learning from our Workawayers as well—about their cultures, languages, perspectives, and life experiences. We see cultural exchange as a two-way street and value open conversations, shared meals, and genuine connection.

We’re looking for a kind, reliable, and open-minded person who would enjoy becoming part of our family and daily life. With a baby joining us in June 2026, we’d love support with light babysitting, household tasks, and cooking, as well as helping out around the barn with the horses.

Help around the house may include general tidying, cleaning, and meal preparation—nothing extreme, just sharing everyday responsibilities as part of family life. Babysitting would involve supporting us with our little one in a calm, caring way as we settle into this new chapter.

At the barn, help could include grooming, bringing horses in, and if enough experience helping with training. Previous horse experience is a big plus but not required—what matters most is a willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work respectfully around animals.

We’re hoping to find someone who enjoys a rural lifestyle, loves animals, and values being part of a supportive, respectful household. In return, we’re happy to share our knowledge, skills, and way of life, and to make you feel truly welcome in our home—not just as help, but as part of our family.

    Hébergement

We offer two accommodation options, depending on what you prefer and what feels like the best fit.

You are welcome to stay in the house with us, where you’ll have a private room with a queen-size bed, TV, and your own bathroom. This option is great if you enjoy being closely involved in family life and sharing day-to-day routines.

Alternatively, you can stay in your own off-grid cabin, located on the other side of the yard. The cabin has power but no running water and includes two queen-size mattresses in a bunk-bed setup, a small fridge, and a heater to stay comfortable. There is an outhouse right next to the cabin, and you would use the house for showering and laundry.

All food is included and shared with us in the house. We would love for you to join us for all meals, and there are always snacks available if you’re hungry in between—no one goes hungry here.

On your days off, you’ll also have access to your own vehicle, which is always available for you to explore the area, go on trips, or enjoy some independence.

We want our Workawayers to feel comfortable, well cared for, and truly at home—whether that’s under the same roof or with a bit more space and privacy.
