Description
¡Hola!
There are two interconnected projects located in a semi-desert area near García, Nuevo León, in northern Mexico.
---
🌿 Social support ranch
This is a long-established 3-hectare social support ranch, dedicated to helping people in general, as well as those from low-income and indigenous communities, through natural health practices, emotional support, and community-based work.
The owner of the ranch is a wise and strong woman of Mayan indigenous roots, born in southern Mexico. She is deeply connected to nature, spirituality, natural medicine and social causes. Since childhood, she has been involved in important social struggles, dedicating much of her time and resources to helping others. After many years of focusing primarily on social support, she is now beginning to invest time and care into gradually improving the ranch itself. It needs upgrading of deteriorating houses and the creation of new areas for larger events planned for the future.
The ranch is home to 6 dogs and 2 cats. Volunteers, visitors, and people seeking emotional or physical recovery occasionally come to stay or visit the place.
---
🌿 New eco-sustainable ranch (wellness &creative project)
Alongside the social support ranch, a new and evolving eco-sustainable, wellness-oriented ranch project is about to begin. This project will focus on conscious living, nature integration, creativity, and a simple rural lifestyle.
It will be inspired by open-minded, nature-based and body-positive spaces found in rural and coastal regions of Mexico, combined with a respectful and community-oriented approach to conscious communal living.
Part of the help will be dedicated to starting the construction of this 600 m² eco-ranch, focused on wellbeing and creative activities, using hybrid construction techniques (block structure with adobe/mud walls). The space will be designed as a calm, open and nature-integrated environment, with a slightly higher level of comfort and infrastructure than the existing ranch.
Planned elements will include:
*A one-level natural house based in mayan-mexican mud style with a kitchen, living area, dry composting toilet, and a spacious room with open front views
*A light-roof terrace for yoga, movement, artistic practices, meditation, and small gatherings
*A natural pool and outdoor shower, integrated into the landscape
*Open areas for rest, sun, and connection with nature
*A temazcal (sauna)
*An orchard for fruits and vegetables
*A greenhouse for hydroponic crops
*Reliable water supply, electricity, and internet
As the space will be designed to be open and closely integrated with nature, with areas such as the temazcal(sauna), natural pool(without the use of chemicals, conventional sunscreens, or any type of clothing), outdoor showers, and sun areas, it will be a clothing-optional and naturist-friendly environment.
🌍 About me
My name is Alberto, I’m 38 years old. I’m a Mexican backpacker and volunteer with more than 7 years of travel experience across 20 countries in Latin America, Europe, and Asia. I have participated in several volunteer projects, so I understand very well the Workaway spirit and the traveler’s perspective.
I chose to step away from a conventional office-based life to explore a simpler, more meaningful path through traveling, volunteering, and supporting social causes whenever possible. In the future, I hope to apply my professional background in technology to social and environmental projects.
Traveling is an adventure filled with both good and challenging moments—each one a learning experience. Along the way you gain skills, languages, stories, friendships, and sometimes even lifelong connections. It’s truly an experience worth living 🙌✨

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
You can learn about the local culture, regional flora and fauna, traditional Mexican cuisine and rural customs. 🏜️🍲
The owner of the social ranch is a very spirituality being following a philosophy similar to Buddhism, Baba Nam Kevalam. She travelled around the world learning many things and helping people. There is also the opportunity to practice meditation, Kirtans and, occasionally, yoga, as well as to learn about medicinal plants and spirituality. 🧘♀️ (Participation is always optional we respect your ideologies)
She has deep knowledge of ancestral Mayan traditions and medicinal plants, as well as wisdom gained through life experience. She prepares many types of natural medicines, which are sent to low-income and indigenous communities. Many people also come to receive her alternative treatments and consultations. From time to time, a curious scientist, biologist, or doctor visit to learn about her methods.
If time allows, I can also show you Monterrey city and surroundings, like some called "pueblos mágicos", typical food and restaurants, popular touristic places in the big city, on some occasions, share a home-cooked Mexican family meal with my relatives in the city.
We also value cultural exchange and will be happy to learn about your culture, language, traditions, food and any skills you would like to share.
Aide
Depending on needs and timing, help may be provided at one or both ranches, which are located side by side.
🗓️Help can vary depending on the season and ongoing projects, and may include:
>Help on the land, irrigation, planting, harvesting and weeding
>Basic construction tasks using adobe, wood or blocks (only when there is an active project)
>Cleaning and tidying common areas
>Feeding and caring for dogs and cats
>General support during visits and activities (organization, logistics, assistance).
>Helping with meditation or yoga events when they take place. (optional)
--
No special skills are required — you can learn while helping 😊
A good physical condition is recommended, as some tasks involve working outdoors, sun exposure and light physical effort.
We value communication and mutual respect. Tasks are always discussed beforehand, and the experience is meant to be a collaborative and supportive exchange, where both sides learn from each other.
Helping hours are flexible and aligned with Workaway standards.

Hébergement
Volunteers sleep and share meals at the social support ranch, where daily life and accommodation currently take place.
Life here is calm, rural, and far from the city. This is a place for people who enjoy nature, simplicity, learning by doing, and meaningful exchange.
---
🛏️ Accommodation is in a shared adobe dormitory with six beds. It is usually quiet, in case some visitors need to stay, they only stay for short visits. Long-term stays are mainly for volunteers. You can see the room in the photos.
🚿 🪣Shower is with a bucket. You can bathe near the sauna area, outdoors under the sun or in any place that feels comfortable. Towels, soap and shampoo are provided.
🧖♀️ There is also a small traditional sauna (temazcal) available for use. The temazcal is traditionally used without clothing, so sitting on a small towel for hygiene reasons is needed. Small towels are also provided.
👕 For washing clothes, there is a traditional outdoor stone laundry for hand washing.
🚽 The toilet is a dry composting toilet. It is basic, and improvements are planned for the future.
🍽️ We share three vegetarian meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Cooking is usually done together or by turns. And there is always some fruits and other small snacks for anytime, so you can feel free and comfortable if feeling hunger.
💦The water is from a well and drinkable.
🥩Meat is not allowed on the property, and meals are vegetarian. Eggs are also not consumed in the social support ranch.
🚗 Pickup from central bus station can be arranged upon arrival.
This is a simple and very rural life, ideal for people open minded, comfortable with basic living or seeking a break from cities.
Autres infos...
--Surroundings, free time & practical info--
The ranch is located in a remote semi-desert area, far from the nearest town. There is no public transportation, and access is by vehicle only.
--Free time & surroundings--
The desert offers a unique environment for:
>Exploring nature and desert landscapes.
>Finding fossils (ammonites, belemnites ) and interesting rocks such as quartz and meteorites, even objects from the time of the Mexican Revolution.
>Hiking in nearby hills and mountains (day hikes or camping for experienced adventurers).
>Relaxing at the ranch: reading, meditating, exercising, playing music, arts, spending time with the pets.
This is a quiet place, ideal for rest, nature and self-reflection.
--Rules & atmosphere--
>The property is vegetarian. Meat is not allowed.
>Alcohol is generally avoided (occasional small amounts are acceptable because the neighbor ranch is a vineyard an occasionally they gives us wine bottles as gifts).
>Drugs and illicit substances are strictly prohibited.
>We maintain a respectful, positive and supportive environment.
>International volunteers must have travel/health insurance.
--Climate & safety recommendations--
🌞 Hot season: March to October (sometimes November). Temperatures can reach 25–45°C. Sun protection and light clothing are essential.
❄️ Cold season: Mid-December to February. Temperatures can drop some days to -1°C at night. Bring warm clothes.
🦟 Mosquito repellent is useful during hot months.
🕷️🐍 As in any desert area, there are venomous animals like rattle snakes, black widows and violin spider. Always check shoes, clothes and sleeping areas.
--Access & transport--
🌧️ When it rains, access to the ranch may not be possible for 2–3 days until the land dries and the dirt road is passable.
🚗 For safety reasons, we do not drive to the ranch at night. If you arrive late or during heavy rain, accommodation in my family home in the city can be arranged until access is possible.
🏜️The ranch is located about 1 hour from the city and 2 hours from the airport. Because of the distance and logistics involved, we kindly ask volunteers to stay for several weeks rather than just a few days. Transportation to and from the ranch requires a significant effort, as public transport routes can be confusing and the final stretch to the ranch has no public transportation available.
--Our approach as hosts--
We deeply respect the volunteering exchange spirit. This is not about counting hours or pressure. Help varies depending on the season and projects, and sometimes there may be little to do. We see this place as a space to learn, help and live together naturally, not as a work obligation.
This is not a formal contract, but clear and honest communication is important for everyone. Through my own volunteer travels, I have seen misunderstandings on both sides: volunteers leaving suddenly due to unmet expectations, and hosts feeling frustrated when the experience felt more like employment than a cultural exchange. This project is not about that. Here, open communication, mutual respect, and the freedom to express ideas or concerns are always encouraged.
This place is best suited for open-minded volunteers who enjoy simplicity, nature and rural life.
