We manage a 200 acre heritage farm within a Provincial Park on Salt Spring Island. We operate a mixed farm with sheep, cows, goats, turkeys, hens, hay crops, and seasonal garden. There are also heritage orchards producing mainly apples and pears. We run a busy farmstand April through October. The Park has many hiking trails, and the ocean is nearby, allowing our farmstay guests easy access to nature during their free time.

We have been hosting farmstay guests from around the world for over 15 years and have made many lasting friendships in doing so. Mike is passionate about sharing the knowledge of farming and gardening, he has endless stories and lessons to share - he encourages questions! Salt Spring Island is the largest of the Southern Gulf Islands, with popular attractions such as the Saturday and Tuesday Markets and of course, Ruckle Provincial Park with our Heritage farm right in the middle. Mike also does fishing and sightseeing boat charters, we try to take our guest help out fishing if there's opportunity. Here as well, Mike has a wealth of experience to share about fishing, the ocean & marine life.
Lambing season has begun by the New Year, during the next 3 months we need help with various aspects, mainly with the orphaned lambs needing bottle fed. Poultry needs care twice daily all year. Spring gets us working on the garden, planting, watering, and weeding.
By April the farmstand dials up it's operation, selling dried apples & tomatoes we have dehydrated from the previous season, jams & jellies, etc,
Note that Workawayers will not be helping with these products for sale on the farmstand.
Early summer we would be working at getting our hay crop off, we try to make a fun evening of bringing in bales after the heat of the day has passed.
Various other tasks need assistance through the year including fence building and bringing in firewood. We do all the cooking, but appreciate help with the cleanup afterwards as well as general housekeeping such as vacuuming.

We provide a bedroom on the lower level of our house, twin beds with dresser, end table, lamp, desk, mirror. Unlimited WiFi available. Shared bathroom with us on the main floor. The bedroom is shared with another farmstay guest if appropriate, often we have only one farmstay at a time but schedules occasionally overlap. We do all the cooking mainly with quality food produced here on the farm or from the ocean. We share our home with our two working Border Collies, their puppy, and two cats.
Bus service runs into the Park May through September. Hitchhiking is recognised as an acceptable form of getting around the island, locals are friendly and used to hitchhikers, and will often give you a ride home even if out of their way to do so. The Saturday Market in Ganges is very popular Spring through Fall. It's possible to rent use of a kayak in Ganges. There is a large public library, swimming pool, arts centre, bookstores, as well as shops and restaurants in Ganges. Right here in Ruckle Park there are many hiking trails and shoreline access. We try to break up the work day taking a large break mid-day after lunch when you are free to do as you wish, go exploring, read, or perhaps take a nap! Saturday and Sunday are yours to do as you like. We have years of endorsements from previous farmstays in scrapbooks we keep, everyone writes about their experience here before they leave. These scrapbooks are a real window into life on our farm and we share those with new arrivals.
