I totaly agree with Nienke feedback, I spend with Tom in his farm only 6 days!
Tom is very easy going and postive person. He has a lot of energy and puts a lot of efforts in him works in garden and so on. Now his house and another bulding are still under remake and rebuild. I got some amazing gifts from him! Anyway my rating is Very good couse I

I spent three weeks with Tom on his farm in order to improve my German. That worked really well, because Tom mainly speaks German, both Swiss German and 'normal' German. We worked long days and had a lot of fun together. Tom is a very kind host: because there is so much work to do, he expects you to work pro-active, but he is also very reasonable
… read more when you need breaks or some time off. And he will surprise you with delicious cake or ice-cream :) But you need to be able to work more than 4 or 5 hours, definitely, so keep that in mind.
I was the first workawayer comming to the farm, and Tom and I sometimes had to figure out what kind of work I could do by myself. Tom is usualy alone and it was sometimes hard for him to let go of some things. He is working on that, but it is also important for you to communicate to him about what you can do and what you want to do.
It took me some time to get used to the work (it was my first work-away experience as well and I was not used to do any physical work) but in the end I really enjoyed it. Tom is an interesting character with good stories about shepherding in the Alps, keeping horses for the Swiss army, and cutting huge trees in France. He has been working 'outside' all his life and can teach you a lot about farming, gardening, and constructing work.
The animals are adorable and I had little ducks running around my feet all day. Almost everything we ate was from the garden and we made everything ourselves, like traditional German Sauerkraut, pickles, bread, cakes, marmalade etc. I really enjoyed cooking there, because this also included going through the garden and gather herbs, veggies, fruits, eggs and everthing you can find. Tom has very good contact with his neighbours and everyone is kind of looking out for eachother, so you're definitely not alone there. Furthermore, the accomodation is really good: I had a large seperate bedroom with good wifi, and was perfectly able to take some time for myself if I needed that.
