    Description

We were established in 1997, by veterinarian Dr. Evarest and Mrs Evelyne, who are experienced in agricultural services, environmental work and the provision of veterinary care and animal welfare education.

Evarest has been working as a vet since 1990 and holds a degree in Environmental Science and a Masters in Zoology. He is supported by his wife Evelyne, who has a certificate in agriculture and livestock and currently operates their agricultural and vet supply shop.

We aim to empower farmers with new technologies, as well as provide consultation and education on animal welfare and agricultural issues.

Our clinic and shelter is located in Sekei, Arusha and we also offer a mobile clinic service in Arusha and nearby areas.

It is mandatory for this workaway that you are vaccinated against both tetanus and rabies. The risk is low, but you will obviously be working with animals, and safety must come first. It is also recommended to have travel/health insurance.

We have 1 employee at the store selling products, 1 care taker at the shelter ,1 dog handler, 1 cleaner, 1 secretary, 1 emergency driver and 2 local volunteers

As part of the Animal Welfare project, you will get the opportunity to provide care for the animals already in the onsite shelter (mainly dogs and cats). The work includes walking the dogs, feeding, vaccinating and for those that want the experience, aiding the Dr in surgeries such as spaying and neutering, although this is less frequent.

There may also be an opportunity from time to time, as part of the Animal Welfare project, to help treat a range of farm and domestic animals, delivering animal care and experiencing veterinary care in a developing country. As an Animal Welfare volunteer there may be some opportunities to treat farm animals such as:

    Chickens
    Cows
    Pigs
    Other livestock
Domestic animals such as dogs and cats

In addition, you can also choose to contribute to agricultural activities and the business in general.

There is also an opportunity to raise funds for the vet. This is by no means mandatory, but previous Workaways have created funding pages to raise money for future vaccination programmes, new equipment for the surgery, improving living conditions in the shelter, and other projects. If you have a good idea, the Dr is keen to hear it! You can raise funds to also see your project come to life. For example, previous Workaways used funding to build a new cat enclosure. Again, this is not a requirement, but obviously can be hugely beneficial to the Vet if you so choose.

Arusha is a small city often used as the base of many safari trips into the Serengeti and other national parks. It’s also near Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. Tanzania as a whole is known for its seemingly boundless areas of wilderness where African animals roam, sometimes migrating in vast groups across the plains; and also being the country where the oldest human skull and even older fossils of human ancestors were found.

The workaway is around 30 minute walk into Arusha, where you can grab a coffee, or visit the various markets. You will have enough time to do other cool things around Arusha, particularly at the weekend.
