    Description

Nestled along Mozambique’s unspoiled coast, this place is more than just a breathtaking eco-lodge — it is home to a foundation dedicated to uplifting local communities and restoring the natural environment.

Over the past 17 years, our efforts have built vital community infrastructure including schools, housing for teachers, a maternity ward, a pharmacy, markets, boreholes, and sanitation facilities. At the same time, we’ve launched pioneering environmental projects, such as agroforestry demonstration plots that thrive even in our hot, drought-prone climate, and a water restoration initiatives to bring safe, sustainable drinking water to families who currently struggle with saline supplies.
As a diving lodge, the ocean is at the heart of who we are. Workawayers join us not only in community and agroforestry projects, but also in marine conservation activities. If you are a specialist in coral restoration or marine research, we would be especially excited to welcome you, as your skills can directly strengthen our mission to protect and restore the pristine reefs along our coast.
We are proud to be team 35 local full time staff members and 19 women who are casual employees and help keep our beach and all pathways clean.
By joining us, Workawayers don’t just experience the beauty of the Indian Ocean and Nuarro’s vibrant biodiversity — they also become part of a movement that blends conservation with community empowerment. Whether through hands-on support in our agroforestry projects, helping with reforestation, or contributing to ongoing community development, every pair of hands helps us grow our vision for a resilient, sustainable future.

Life here is all about community — on land and in the sea. Workawayers will have the chance to connect not only with our team and family, but also with the wider community that we work so closely with. From joining in on soccer games in the village , to sharing meals, stories, and laughter under the stars , there are plenty of ways to feel at home here.

We are also a diving lodge, and as a team we love to go diving, snorkelling, and exploring our pristine ocean together. Workawayers can share in this passion, discovering coral reefs, mangroves, and the incredible biodiversity of our coast. Anyone with knowledge or interest in coral restoration would be a wonderful addition to our team, as we continue working to protect and restore our marine ecosystem.

We love sharing our knowledge about agroforestry, reforestation, marine conservation, and community projects — and in return, we’re always excited to learn new ideas, skills, and perspectives from our Workawayers. Whether it’s tips in digital marketing, cooking traditions from your home country , or creative fundraising ideas, we welcome it all.

By hosting people from different cultures, we hope to build lifelong friendships and exchange experiences that inspire both you and our community. You’ll discover the rhythms of coastal Mozambican life — from local markets and traditional music to breathtaking sunsets and unforgettable dives.
This is more than just volunteering; it’s about creating a shared journey where we grow together while making a difference.

Here no two days are the same! You’ll be part of a small, passionate team where we work side-by-side, share skills, and learn from each other. Depending on your interests, you might get involved in:

Community Projects – help us with ongoing initiatives like building, water access, and supporting local groups.

Agroforestry & Reforestation – join in planting, composting, and maintaining our demo plots that teach farmers new, sustainable ways of growing food.

If you’re a specialist in coral restoration or marine research, Nuarro is the perfect place to put your expertise into action while exploring our pristine reefs.

Fundraising & Creative Media – support us by creating short videos for Instagram and YouTube, setting up GoFundMe campaigns, or designing content that helps us raise awareness.

Website & Social Media – keep our website vibrant and updated, help us expand to more platforms, and boost our online presence.

This is very hands-on work where we’ll guide you, and in turn, we’d love to learn from your skills and ideas. Whether it’s digital, practical, or creative, everything you bring contributes to making a real impact in the community and environment here in Mozambique.

At Nuarro you’ll be immersed in a true mix of cultures and languages. Most of the local community speaks Macua (the regional mother tongue) and Portuguese, which is Mozambique’s national language. Around the lodge and foundation, you’ll also hear and use English, especially when working with our international partners and guests. Workawayers will have the chance to practice Portuguese with our team and community, and if you’d like to teach Portuguese to our non-Portuguese speaking team members or help our non-English speakers improve their English, it’s all warmly welcomed. In return, we’d love to learn from you — whether it’s picking up phrases in your home language or sharing cross-cultural expressions. Language is a big part of how we connect, and we find that even small exchanges spark laughter and friendships. So whether you’re keen on practicing Portuguese, supporting English learning, learning a little bit of Macua to communicate with our locals or simply enjoying the mix of tongues around the dinner table, you’ll feel right at home here

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

Workawayers will stay in our dedicated volunteer houses, located right alongside our management homes — so you’ll truly feel like part of the family. Each volunteer has their own private room, offering comfort and personal space to relax after a busy day.

We take security seriously: with staff security guards on duty throughout the night, as well as cameras in certain areas of the property, you can be sure of a safe and welcoming environment.

Our housekeeping team keeps the rooms clean and also does laundry, while our kitchen staff (working in two daily shifts) prepare succulent meals every day. Our friendly waiting staff not only serve but also help keep the eating area and kitchen tidy, making mealtimes a relaxed and enjoyable part of daily life.

The houses are simple but cozy, surrounded by the same beauty and peace that makes this place so special. Shared meals and time together are a big part of life here, though there’s also space to cook and prepare your own food if you’d like.

In short: you’ll have a clean, secure, and friendly home base with delicious food and a family atmosphere while being immersed in the heart of our community.

When you’re not helping with projects, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the magic of Nuarro and its surroundings. Being a diving lodge, the ocean is right at your doorstep — perfect for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or simply relaxing on the beach. You can also join in community soccer matches, visit nearby markets, or explore the coastline and other lodges to see what they have to offer.

For a cultural adventure, Ilha de Moçambique — the country’s original capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is about 150 km away. With its historic buildings, rich cultural heritage, and unique atmosphere, it’s well worth a visit during your stay.

Transport: We are in a remote, off-grid location, so please know that public transport is very limited. We can help arrange private transfers from Nampula or Nacala, and once here, everything you need is within walking distance.

House Rules & Lifestyle: Life here is simple, communal, and close to nature. We live like family — sharing meals, respecting each other’s space, and helping keep common areas tidy. Water and electricity are precious, so we ask everyone to use them mindfully. Nights are peaceful, with security on duty, and mornings are often filled with birdsong or the sound of the ocean.
We welcome open-minded, adaptable Workawayers who are excited to live sustainably, connect with the community, and share in both work and play.

Profile photo of Orerra and Freckles

    Orerra and Freckles (3 ans)

We share our home with two beautiful Dogo Argentinos who are very much part of the family.

Orerra — her name means beautiful in Macua. She is our gentle, affectionate female who loves to be loved and will happily return all the affection you give her.
Freckles— named for the large black spot on his back. He has a more reserved temperament and prefers to get to know you first. Once he trusts you, his affection shines through, but while waiting for that bond to grow, Orerra will happily soak up all your love.

Both dogs are very athletic, with webbed feet that make them natural swimmers. They love joining us at the beach and are wonderful companions for anyone who enjoys being around animals.
