    Description

We are a very diverse group of friends and family living off-grid in a patch of second-growth Valdivian rainforest. Two of us practice permaculture, including beekeeping, organic gardening, forest garden maintenance, and more. We make our own honey mead, conserves, jams, fermentations, etc. We also produce salves and other products with the wax and honey from our bees. There are always a large variety of activities to help out with at our little Ecovillage, principally bio-construction, gardening, beekeeping and homestead maintenance; there are also wonderful vegetarian meals to enjoy. We are trying to live in balance with the forest and have many human scale technologies to do so, including a ram pump, solar pumps, rainwater catchment, dry toilets, bio-filters, rocket stoves, bio-construction with natural and recycled materials, and more.
We take our responsibility as workaway hosts very seriously, and since we are such a small project that can only accept two or three volunteers at a time please only confirm your stay if you are sure you can make it and are truly interested in learning about permaculture and off-grid life.
Since we try to live in balance with the forest and live off-grid with no garbage pick-up or municipal services we do not consume unnecessary plastic and recycle everything we can ourselves. Please consider this in your packing.

We are an internationally diverse group working towards a sustainable life in different ways. So, here you could learn diverse techniques to help make a transition towards a more sustainable, balanced life path. We are a very small eco-village based on an ethic of love, respect, personal responsibility, freedom, and creation. We are part of a local network of similar projects and also part of the global Eco-village network.

We work hard here. The specific projects we are working on are seasonal and constantly changing, but we are generally doing garden maintenance, beekeeping activities, forest garden maintenance, caring for, harvesting and/or processing herbs, making salves and other products, and general homestead maintenance (controlling invasive species, fixing existing infrastructure, firewood production, etc.). We are also generally working on some sort of new construction project as well. One of our principal goals is to share and exchange ideas with the volunteers who pass through, so volunteers work side-by-side with us. Volunteers help for five hours a day, 5 days a week and are provided with home-made vegetarian food (we do sometimes eat local fish). On the weekends or free days Valdivia is only a 30 minute bus ride away and there are also many other nearby beautiful places to visit on free days.

First of all, our apiary (bee's home) is very close to our house so if you are allergic to bees this is NOT the project for you. The accommodations available are a shared apartment space or a shared room on the second floor of our honey-house. The other option is to stay in your tent if you prefer. Remember that we live in a rainforest so it is always colder here than in Valdivia and while summers tend to be dry and warm during the day, nights are always colder and spring and fall can be cold and damp. We require that you bring your own sleeping bag, towel and personal items including work clothes and work shoes, work gloves are also a big plus! It is also important to know that during the summer months we have very little water so washing clothes here is not really an option. We also heat bath water up on a rocket stove or in the sun and bath with a cup! So please do NOT expect a hot shower here! Bathing with a cup is more fun than most think! We also have biofilters to filter our gray water, so please come prepared with biodegradable soap and shampoo. If you are not able to acquire these products before your arrival we can sell you our honey soap and shampoo here.
Since we live off-grid we have limited electricity with solar panels that will allow you to charge a cell phone or laptop during daylight hours only. We have cell phone coverage with Movistar and very limited coverage with Entel. You will be responsible for any non-biodegradable garbage that you bring to the place; there is a dumpster next to the bus stop for you to drop this off.

There are many beautiful sights to see around where we are, including Valdivia, one of Chile's most beautiful cities, the coast, mountain lakes like Lago Ranco, parks like Parque Oncol and natural reserves like La Reserva Costera Valdiviana with one of the most ancient trees alive, the Alerce. In the Región de los Ríos there is a delicious variety of local beer, beautiful rivers like the Calle Calle in Valdivia, wonderful beaches along the coast, and in the summer there are many "fiestas costumbristas" to get to know the local food and cultural identity.
