    Description

    Hello, we are Ejvind & Vicky Poulsen. We live in a straw bale house that we built on our acreage which is about 20 km. from the Central Alberta town of Three Hills. We raise a few pigs and cattle for meat. We are involved in our church, just 8 km down the road and attend services on Sunday mornings. We are also involved in our community, so sometimes a need arises and we all go to help a neighbour. We would especially welcome a guest who wants to become a part of our family/community while they visit and allow us to learn from them and they from us.
    We can host families up to about 8 persons. We raised our 6 children and so are used to the fun and commotion that family life brings. We are now grandparents and often have our kids and young ones visit.
    Travel to our home must be by personal vehicle. The nearest airport is 140km away and the closest bus station is 115km from us. When we know the day and time you will be arriving, we will arrange a trip to the city to meet you.

    We live simply by modern standards but not entirely 'off the land'. You could learn about preserving food, various livestock and farming crops in our area.
    When guests are with us, we take them on day trips on their days off so we can show unique sights close by. We'd like to also get to know you and about your culture and customs so we tend to ask a lot of questions. We like to play games and Vicky especially enjoys playing various card games and board games.

    Inside:
    We try to make our food from scratch; grind grain to make flour used to make bread and so on. We encourage each guest to make at least one meal while they are with us so we can taste something you eat in your home country, but we realize you will be using Canadian ingredients. We've lived in our straw bale home for a few years now but still need to make some cupboards, sew more window coverings, and some other tasks.
    We are in the process of constructing a butcher shop and so could use your help with this project.
    Outside::
    We've got pigs, some cattle, several cats, and a dog, but none of our pets are in the house. We could use help with milking a cow by hand, pruning trees, seeding/harvesting the vegetable garden, weeding, and lawn mowing too. Depending on the time of year and the weather when you visit, there may be digging and stuccoing jobs.

    You will have your own room but share the remainder of the house with our family. We wish to have only non-smoking guests visit our home and property, this includes vaping.

    Contact with your family and friends is important, YOU CAN ALWAYS EMAIL but . . . we would say that Internet access is limited because of cost. We do not want any downloading, skyping or viewing YouTube at our home, you can do these activities when we drive to town, usually once every other week.

    Your day will begin at 6:30 am; during breakfast we get our instructions for the day and connect with each other before Ejvind leaves for his job. We often take a rest in the afternoon. After work in the evenings, sometimes workawayers go to town to hang out at the swimming pool, or we play either lawn games or card games or just sit and relax, and on Sunday nights we eat a lot of popcorn and watch movies suitable for the whole family.

    Location:
    Within a 3 hour drive from our home you could find yourself in the breathtaking Rocky Mountains or shopping in the large West Edmonton Mall or at the unique Balzac Mall. About an hour drive from our home we can explore Hoodoos in the Drumheller Badlands and see the World's Largest Dinosaur. Of course even closer to home are the acres and acres of land where farmers grow such crops as: wheat, barley, oats, canola and some flax, corn and hemp. There is wildlife (deer, moose, coyotes, foxes, and various birds) in our area and some nice river valleys and coulees to explore. Some of our previous workawayers have enjoyed walking around the 'country block' (9.5 km) and reading while sitting on one of the decks after work was done for the day. If you don't have your own vehicle, your sight-seeing will be limited to viewing local scenery on your day off as we still have work to do each day and can't always drive you places. For your planning purposes, there is no public transportation near us; the closest airport and bus terminal is 1.5-2 hours away from our home.
