I fully recommend Agnese - she is very educated, interesting to talk to, progressive and open-minded, highly responsible and mature, and extremely kind and patient. She is also admirably flexible and excellent at communicating. For example, she adapted along with us to a surprising change in our living situation, when an international student fleeing the war in Ukraine stayed with us on short notice. We hope to stay in touch and that we will see each other in North or South Europe or Canada soon!

… read more able to make so many sweet memories of picking up Jade from the nearby daycare we were able to make so many sweet memories of getting chocolate ice cream and meeting other families at the parks. Jade is a social butterfly, who taught me so much during my trip. Furthermore, I was able to learn so much from Jin and their work and lived experiences over cups of tea.

Jade is a really cool kid. She loves to eat ice cream and chocolate. She also likes dancing and singing. You can surprise her with good music (she gets bored with children's music).

Marisa is an absolute joy to live and work with. She is mature, self-directed, kind, thoughtful and a real team worker. Her qualifications are many:
… read more She possesses excellent skills in child rearing, homeschooling and house holding, of which I will highlight her success in teaching my child Spanish, literacy, numeracy, drawing and urban-nature-based exploration, her budgeting skills, as well as her excellent health-conscious cooking. In addition, she possesses certified media expertise as a journalist, media scholar and film post-producer that she contributed to my home and professional life in numerous ways. As if having two degrees wasn't enough, she is currently planning on returning to University to pursue a teaching degree. If her last five months with my child are any indication, she will doubtlessly become an excellent teacher. Marisa also became a real friend whose progressive outlook, shared during numerous kitchen table conversations, I already miss. She also became family, and the perfect pod buddy to socially distance with during COVID-19. Saying bye has been hard, for me and the kiddo, who loves her dearly. Theresa made a wonderful contribution to our home. … read more abilities. Jade loved her to pieces, never objected to being alone with her, and learned many new words under Theresa's watch. Several times, Theresa made us yummy food, and we spent many afternoons and evening lounging on our balcony together. Theresa has many insights about food, holistic health, community and nature, and I enjoyed and learned from our many conversations.
Theresa has worked in many interesting positions, including as an educator for children with special needs, and has a lot of experience and expertise to offer. While she was with us, she applied for BA programs in social work and pedagogy and I am crossing my fingers that her hard work will be recognized and rewarded. I was excited to hear that Theresa and her mother might be planning to open a farm with an educational element for kids in Southern Germany. I have a feeling they will succeed with this plan. I hope that one day Jade and I can return be workawayers at their farm! Good luck Theresa!

Doing my first move, experiencing the new area, taking Gym or Swimming session together or going on a walk - there are many memories I will take with me. But no memory will be as strong as the one thinking of how they made me, a complete stranger, a part of their family for these 5 weeks. Jessica is a top-notch caregiver and homemaker. Her professional experience and training from working in a daycare in Germany for several months really showed. There were many things my kid learned from Jessi, including discipline! Transitioning Jade into Jessi's care, and from the drop ins in the old neighbourhood into new child spaces in the new neighbourhood, was smooth as a dream. Jessi is competent and absolutely trustworthy, and I fully recommend her as a workawayer.
Jessi also excelled at her housemate duties. She chipped in with a few delicious meals and conscientiously took turns with tidying up and cleaning. Her profile is no overstatement: Jessi is an amazing cook and baker. She has a great eye for interior decorating and aesthetics that I was able to benefit from while unpacking my boxes in our new home. And her standards for a clean home are very thorough.
It was lovely to witness Jessi blossom in Canada. She is one of the most adventurous persons who has visited us. She tried everything possible - from sightseeing to trips to different cities and national parks to Meet Ups to joining us to the YMCA to other workaways on farms and in families. She did all this while applying for a social work degree in Germany, no doubt successfully. I have no doubt that she will make a valuable contribution wherever she goes.

… read more Next to doing house-related chores (cooking, cleaning up) I was mostly taking care of Jade (by taking her to drop-ins, for walks or to the library). Jade is such a happy and sweet child. It was a lot of fun to play with her, teach her some new words and watch her explore the world a bit more everyday.
I was happy that Jin & Jade liked to hangout during non-work time, too. By having breakfast/dinner together, watching some Netflix every evening and also exploring Toronto together, I got to know them a bit more.
To summarize: I really couldn't be more happy with this workaway experience. I would have loved to stay a bit longer, but am sure that I'll meet Jin & Jade in the future, too :)

… read more loves talking to people with such conviction and passion that it makes you wonder what exactly she is trying to express with her babbling. Most of the time she is probably complaining about the hardships of being a toddler!
I spent a lot of my time with Jade at the morning drop in, a space that allowed her to play and socialize with other children. It was a great opportunity to meet locals, talk to parents and make friends with the students that worked there. Other times I would take her to the bookstore, where she would run around and bask in the attention she was getting from the staff. There is always lots to do in Toronto and Jade loves exploring new places, especially when there is space to move around or stairs to climb up and down.
Living with Jin was great. They were an amazing flat mate and we got along really well! We shared chores around the house and they would let me know whenever there was something else that needed to be done. We usually had our meals together and I always looked forward to our Netflix nights. Jin is a very interesting and educated person and I loved the many conversations we had over dinner. I learned a lot from them and I’m incredibly thankful. They also introduced me to an amazing community of queer people of colour and always encouraged me to seek out events that were happening to get to know other members. Toronto is a city with an incredibly large QTBIPOC community which is one of the reasons that I was drawn to it and Jin’s circle of friends are all lovely people that made me feel so very welcome. Their baby care-collective was an entirely new concept to me and it moved me how supportive everyone was of each other and how willing to help out. I admire them for the community that they’ve built on their own and the chosen family they’ve acquired along the way. At the end of my stay, Jin organized a farewell party and I was amazed by how many people showed up to say goodbye. I don’t think I could have asked for a better host and I was very lucky that my first workaway experience was such a pleasant one!

Our time with Lisa was absolutely dreamy. We felt so lucky to have her in our house for two full months. She was a perfect fit for Jade's care collective, and it was an immense privilege to have a community member stay with us who fit into our world so seamlessly and perfectly.

… read more contribute. She is absolutely reliable and extremely thoughtful. She has the best interest of everyone in the group in mind. She is able to listen to feedback and learns from it instantly. She is also so very wonderful with children. Her ability to empathize with and entertain a tiny human with humour and care. In the time that she was here, Jade adopted Lisa as the second most important person in her universe. It is sad to see her go!
Lisa is a super pleasant person all around. Her interest in arts and social justice makes her an interesting person to be around and talk to. She is wonderful to live with. Her cooking tastes great, and her sense of cleanliness and tidiness is the best I've come across yet in a house mate. In fact, she has an excellent eye for interior decorating. We called her our KonLisa (after KonMarie)!
Importantly, Lisa also participated in Jade’s cultural reproduction as a child of German, African and Asian heritage. She took her to several cultural events focused on Black children and children of colour, including Black History Month, the Toronto Black Film Festival, Toronto’s Black-owned book shop A Different Booklist, and the Toronto Storytelling Festival at Toronto Reference Library. Lisa's own background in diasporic and community organizing, and her creative and intellectual skills and experiences were invaluable in this. As a result, she was able to build bridges that helped Jade access these contexts easily.
Through Jade’s care collective, Lisa became immersed in Torontonian culture. She also became acquainted with some of the leading figures in Toronto’s Black, queer and feminist communities. Lisa became a much loved and respected member of our neighbourhood. During her last week with us, we organized an event to honour Lisa's time with us. Twenty people showed up, and there were flowers and applause. We will definitely miss her and hope she will be back. We wish her all the best in her future studies and career.

Vivian has a record of working to an outstanding standard in whichever sector she chooses. She loves nature, animals and the outdoors. She has a keen interest in agriculture and is genuinely interested in learning more about Canadian and other international farming approaches. The "work" was pretty easy going as well. Jade is a happy little toddler and so cute ( you can catch a smile almost all the time :)). We spent a lot of time in the library together which is super kid friendly.
In my free time and on my days off I explored Downtown Toronto which is right around the corner. Most necessary shops are within walking distance and public transport is pretty close by as well.
I had my own room which was nice for if I needed some time for myself. That wasn't that often though, spending my free time with them was a common occurrence ;)
