    Description

    The forest retreat is a beautiful plot on the edge of the Knysna indigenous forest, being an hour away from the nearest town, it is a truly enchanting, secluded, forested environment, alive with transformational healing energy.

    As part of the expansion of facilities, we have constructed a traditional Opá temple; a circular structure which will serve as an exclusive space to conduct prayer, meditation or honoring to the spirit of the forest.

    We are in the early stages of re-establishing a base for our spirit tribe to come together to learn and grow through experiential application of sustainable technologies and systems. We are working (mainly) on reforestation; pulling out and cutting down of alien trees and utilising them as building materials for various structures, growing baby indigenous trees in our nursery and transplanting them into exponentially growing pods of indigenous flora around the land.

    The tasks we do are often very physical; building structures, carrying around heaps of cut-down trees, debarking alien trees, weaving thin bendable trees into structures for garden or other, weeding the garden, working and planting in the garden, chopping wood, clearing out dead branches from the surrounding forest etc.

    You will be participating here as a part of our community, learning about gardening, diet, food, cooking, utilizing our sacred retreat space to cultivate a passion you have been wanting to express and having a simple accommodation space to rest and we contribute some basic food products to the communal cupboard, in exchange for your enthusiastic dedicated energy to our project

    Please note, we will supply some basic veggies, herbs, and spices to the communal sharing cupboard, enough to make two meals per day and oats for breakfast. We expect all volunteers to bring their own fresh fruits, nuts/seeds, other condiments, and snacks along.

    We like to bring the surrounding conscious community together for a common purpose, usually surrounding a healing intent, and thus once a month, usually around the full moon, we hold a Sweat Lodge Purification Ritual. This ritual is based on the native American Lakota traditional way of purifying, by crawling into a symbolic womb of mother earth and sitting around a central pit which holds hot stones, to which we pour water to create steam, which then makes us sweat a lot of toxins and emotional baggage that no longer serve us. We invite all our friends in the area and you may choose to attend as well.

    Other healing modalities that we work with include sound healing therapy, earth-integrated community living, body detoxification, healing with nutrition and collaborations with other traditional healers.

    About the retreat space;

    The 'Retreat space' is a multi-functional area on the land, which consists of some accommodation huts, a beautiful communal kitchen, a communal dining area, a yoga temple, fire-heated showers, and composting toilets. This space is almost completely off the grid, with the only electricity supply being in the kitchen. This space offers the beauty of living very minimally in a forest environment.

    The yoga temple space is used almost daily as a yoga studio, it has a 180' view of the surrounding forest.

    Camping for volunteers is free but there is also accommodation and facilities include rustic wooden huts that sleep two people each. There is no electricity or running water connected to the huts and they provide a bed with a clean sheet and a small space to put your clothes. If possible we ask you to bring your own bedding/sleeping bag and pillows.

    There is a lovely communal kitchen for volunteers to utilise, equipped with basic pots, crockery, and cutlery for preparing meals and refrigerating facility to store food. We provide the basic ingredients for you to be able to make a decent breakfast/lunch/dinner and expect volunteers to put heads and hands together to feed themselves communally.

    We have fire-heated nature integrated showers and composting toilets. Volunteers will need to chop their own wood for heating shower-water, be water conscious and caring of the space, animals, and plants around the space. We are off the grid with water supply, our only water source being the catchment of rainwater, and thus we take very short showers or swim in the dam rather than showering every day.

    If you like;
    -being in raw nature
    -with little technological distractions,
    -willing to sweat a lot in the sun every day,
    -swimming in dams,
    -listening to birds,
    -being still and tranquil,
    -don't drink alcohol,
    -dietary conscious,
    -respectful and open minded
    -interested in furthering an art, yoga or meditation practice,
    THEN THIS IS A GREAT PLACE FOR YOU TO VOLUNTEER!

    If you want to;
    -party,
    -take any drugs (including alcohol),
    -listen to loud music,
    -not really give our project your all but simply do what you must, to get free accommodation,
    -eat canned/frozen food,
    -smoke cigarettes,
    -not really be involved in the communal growth and rather be watching movies by yourself,
    -need continuous internet access,
    -not make any effort to look at how you can better yourself
    THEN THIS PLACE IS DEFINITELY NOT FOR YOU!

    We want people who want to WORK HARD every morning and can spend their afternoons ENTERTAINING THEMSELVES with a self-advancement-like project or practice like Art, Yoga, learning an Instrument, learning poi, making Jewellery, reading Books etc.

    Our goal is to grow as a community in spiritual practice and living harmoniously with the earth and all our fellow beings. We have an NPC created to fund our indigenous reforestation project and the implementation of off the grid nature mimicking technologies, so we may learn and manifest more constructive ways of harmonious living on this land.

    We ask that you CONSIDER YOUR INTENTION for visiting our space SERIOUSLY and not make the decision on it just being easy accommodation. We want people who want to be HERE, participating with us on conscious advancement methods and feel genuinely drawn to a better and more harmonious way of living with yourself, your human community, Mother Earth and all our fellow creatures.

    The land and infrastructure require immediate expansion in a number of areas, thus requiring the physical capability and presence of more than one or two individuals at a time. We offer a program of energy exchange for volunteers to be able to live and work with us on the land and learn experientially about nurturing the relationship between themselves and nature to keep the flow of healing energy alive with creativity and enthusiastic participation!

    We have a beautiful organic vegetable garden, which we have recently expanded. The garden itself is a tool for both practical and academic education about how to grow food with permaculture methods, how to harvest produce and save seeds, how to identify and utilize medicinal plants and how to connect with mother earth.

    The property is on the boundary of the indigenous Knysna forest. So we are thinning out the alien species on the land and reforesting the land with indigenous trees, this is a project which we will oversee for the next fifteen years. At the moment we are doing a lot of clearing of thick alien overgrowth, this is quite physical work, but very good for working out all the muscles in your body, getting into a healthy sleep cycle and it requires little to no experience or knowledge to participate, only a happy and enthusiastic attitude to be fun and exciting!

    We will welcome tree sponsorships and interactive workshops as things unfold, thereby further developing an indigenous forest space that invokes a strong reconnection with nature for anyone visiting the retreat. Once the food garden project is complete we will begin to build our own indigenous plant nursery, seeded from the trees and plants in the indigenous forest, which we can transplant trees from to other parts of the land.

    As part of the expansion of facilities, we will construct a traditional Opa temple; a circular structure which will serve as an exclusive space to conduct prayer, meditation or honoring to spirit. We will use mostly organic material harvested from the land. This will be a fun eco-building project!

    There is a river gorge 1 km from our land, the hike to get there is through a beautiful descending rivene path of thick indigenous forest, it is a fun way to spend a sunny day! There are no restaurants, hang out places, grocery or other shops around us. We live an hour out of the nearest town.
