    Description

The homestead is an emerging and unique part-time enterprise in the Peace River region close to the Rocky Mtn foothills of northwest Canada. The property is situated on the shores of Moberly Lake, in north-east BC. Proprietor Reg has lived in the Peace region since 1991, where he has operated an environmental, community development and land-use planning consultancy. Reg also enjoys cultural pursuits in music and international travel. He also created and led projects in support of a non-profit organization The Boreal Centre for Sustainability related to eco-friendly livelihood diversification and support for food, water and energy security.

With the help of extended family and youth workers from the community and First Nations over several years, the property now has three facilities including a rental guest cabin, office/guest house, and lakeshore principal dwelling to provide a range of guest accommodations. Efforts are being made to complete renovations including alternative-energy retrofits, interior design renovations featuring a lakeview music studio, a roof-top garden plus expanded production garden. I would love for you to share this experience in helping to realize this community eco-cultural project vision if you have some of the basic skills and interests to support our program.

The impressive surroundings and vibrant local economy creates a foundation for the facility which is situated midway between Vancouver, BC and Whitehorse, Yukon and a convenient base for Workaway travellers to enjoy a tranquil natural setting, amazing outdoor adventures, and unique northern rural and indigenous cultural experiences.

Plans are to start hosting a few short-stay tourist visitors, backpackers and friends starting in mid summer 2026 as my ability and time permits . The facility when fully operational, will have capacity to host both local visitors and international travellers as a unique short or extended stay visitor experience.

Reg's professional background in environmental consulting has focused on faith-centred sustainability planning with northern rural and First Nation's communities. This work and life experience is being transferred into this new creative and visionary endeavour at the Eco-Homestead to shape people's interests in cooperative intentional travel and learning about ecologically-sensitive living....not to mention, just simply a place for enjoying beautiful & tranquil surroundings with opportunities to share in music, food and conversation!

During the remaining season of operation in summer/fall 2026, priority for placement is for a single Workawayer (min 1 week to maximum 2 week stay) who meets the eligibility criteria for the part-time assigned work including prior WA referrals and/or work references. One week placement extensions are possible for work exchange subject to a mutually satisfactory performance review.

Compensation will be at the minimum BC hourly rate ($18.75) plus accommodation (value of $50/workday) for all hours (est 4- 6 hrs day) worked in a sub-contracted capacity based on a prior mutually agreed service agreement.

Workawayers must have a vehicle for access to this remote community location at a distance of 25 km to the nearest service centre.

Work on the property includes a range of tasks as required to assist with berry harvesting and processing, facility maintenance (interior/exterior painting, cleaning ), light construction and finishing, fencing and occasional house-sitting/pet care. Additional help may also be available to develop the Eco-Centre online resources, with product development, social marketing and promotional social events.

There are local opportunities to promote your own artistic endeavours, and perhaps offer short-course instruction on topics of your own interest or supporting other community learning activities as opportunities to enrich our shared experience together. This could be just the refuge get-away travel experience you need and connecting with cool people who share similar values and thrive on the idea of a northern remote living and learning experience.
