COVID Update: We have an ongoing sterilization project, and are always open to veterinarians who are experienced in working independently and unsupervised. We can waive our 3-week minimum for you.
We are a grassroots volunteer Animal Clinic caring for Koh Mak's stray, temple, & owned animals.
We are a Non-Profit and rely entirely on donations, volunteers, and sponsorship to carry out our work. We receive no government funding, and rely on the good will of our local community, tourists, and friends.
We are seeking volunteers with veterinary experience. Specifically spay/neuter, and with the ability to work unsupervised.
We accept some general volunteers, providing daily cleaning & animal care. We love those who are handy & hardworking, can help with DIY, renovation, and are willing to get sweaty. We have foster puppies on-site, who need socialising and enjoy overnight cuddles!
Our primary goal is Population Control, through sterilization, vaccination, and education.
Due to limited occupancy please no pets, families/children, full-time digital nomads, groups of 3+. Partners/friends applying are only accepted in our accommodation exchange on-site if both parties are volunteering. Smoking okay outdoors but not inside provided bedrooms or shared living space. Drug use prohibited. Alcohol use on-site should be limited/casual, and not interfere with work hours.

Our volunteers come from all over the world and have varying levels of education and experience. There are many cultural norms that challenge communication - how you expect to speak and share feedback will be different than someone else. There are also language barriers that may limit depths of connection. We hope to offer a neutral middle-ground to do our best to "meet you where you are" and respect everyone's identity, culture, time, and energy. We hope you will also learn something about yourself while you are here.
Koh Mak is just off the coast of Cambodia, so the folks who live here come from both Thailand and Cambodia. You will get a chance to interact with both of these similar but different cultures.
We work closely with the islands residents, so you will get a chance to see how locals live and experience island life. You will also have the opportunity to visit our Buddhist temple, caring for the temple dogs or joining meditation.
We are looking for: Veterinarians, Vet Nurses/Techs
***Everyone on our team is responsible for the fundamentals of maintaining our facility: cleaning, poo picking, laundry, etc., we are non-hierarchal. Surgical volunteers are responsible for preparing the surgical room, picking up patients, sterilizing surgical packs, etc.***
As long as we have surgical volunteers, we maintain an ongoing sterilization program of owned and stray animals. We have an ongoing preventative program, including annual vaccines, monthly preventives, grooming, and wellness checks. We maintain an active presence all year. Vet volunteers should be prepared for emergent/crisis care primarily: car accidents or poisoning. Emergencies are few and far between, but may not be during “work hours”.
You will be expected to participate in trapping/catching of strays, within a margin of safety that is reasonable given your experience and comfort.
We won't always have a doctor and a nurse/tech together (although this is the ideal pairing). It is necessary for you to be experienced in working unsupervised, and/or have the patience to be able to work with an untrained assistant.
We have 3 bedrooms: 1 twin room and 2 double rooms. These are fan rooms, with shared access of the bathroom, kitchen, and living area. The shared living spaces are indoor/outdoor. We have NO hot water, NO air conditioning, and NO wifi! Those with hostel or camping experience will have an easier time adjusting to our simple, slow living.
We provide refill drinking water and toilet paper.
Current kitchen appliances: refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, sandwich press, blender, single-element gas stove, gas kettle, rice/slow cooker.
Living area has hammocks and a dining table with chairs.
A SIM card with mobile data is a requirement for all volunteers to maintain communication during your stay. We have 4G connection from all of Thailand’s major providers. Please buy your SIM prior to arrival to the island, available at any 7/11 on the mainland.
Food is not included, meals on the island start at 50thb.
You have shared access to our scooters. Gasoline not included, helmets not provided. Bicycles, electric golf carts, and other scooters are available to rent on the island.
Additional perks and discounts to be shared at the time of your arrival.
You are responsible for general planning and seeking easily googleable information: seasons/climate, what to wear, etc. If it’s beyond this, please contact us for more information.
If our basic accommodation is not suitable, you are welcome to find paid accommodation nearby. There are discounts for weekly/monthly rates.
There is plenty of opportunity for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. We have minimal elevation, making this an ideal place for runners and cyclists. There is Muay Thai, tennis, restaurants, and bars. You can use your time-off on the island, or island hop nearby.
Transport from Bangkok can be via small plane, private taxi/van, or bus. The trip by land takes 5-8 hours. There is a 1hr speedboat from the adjacent mainland pier.
On-boarding document to be shared prior to your arrival, providing an overview of life on the island and relevant perks and recommendations.
