    Description

Hi! Let me introduce ourselves, we are Zoe, Andy and Adam, a small family who have decided to commit to living a more sustainable and natural way of life. I, Zoe, was born in the UK and have lived in Spain for over 20 years along with my husband, Andrew, who is South African. Our family is bi-lingual Spanish/ English. We have travelled widely and really enjoy meeting new people and sharing experiences with them.

In 2023 we bought an old farmhouse with a hectare of land in the North of Spain with the idea of living more sustainably and growing our own food. It was a big change for us and the beginning of what feels like the greatest adventure of our lives. There was and is a lot to learn and do and although at times it can all feel a bit daunting, we feel nourished and continuously inspired by the mountains, woodland, rivers and wild life all around us.

And little by little we are getting there. The farmhouse is now a comfortable place to live in and we are now setting our sites on re-wilding some of the land that was previously used for pasture and setting up a food forest and vegetable gardens using permaculture and organic farming principles. We also hope to start rehabilitating a barn for workshops, creative projects, yoga and other activities.

We live in a very small hamlet surrounded by woods, farm and pasture land and mountains. There are wolves, wild boar, deer and eagles in our valley, yet we are only 20 minutes away from the coast and beautiful natural beaches and some great surfing. Our closest town, Luarca, a coastal town on the Camino de Santiago, which offers a real taste of life in the North of Spain with excellent restaurants, cafes, shops and amenities. The close knit community around us is very welcoming and traditional Asturian food and culture is celebrated and preserved in small, every day things as well as during the wonderful local festivals.

As we approach spring and summer, we are looking forward to welcoming people to share this wonderful space with us and find time for connection, inspiration and nourishment.

Staying with us is an opportunity to experience a completely different Spain to the one that is often sold in the tourist brochures. Asturias is packed with unspoilt beaches, mountains and forests, tranquility and space and has a rich geography, heritage and culture that is very distinct from the rest of Spain. A lot of people cannot believe that Asturias is a part of Spain when they visit! Where ever possible, we actively encourage and facilitate our guests exploring and getting to know the area. The Camino de Santiago runs through our nearest town and throughout the year we meet people from all over the world making their pilgrimages. Their stories are often inspiring and we are happy to consider shorter stays for visitors walking the camino, or to help people staying with us walk some of it.

Around our house and on the land there is great opportunity for learning about permaculture and organic gardening, basic building, art and crafts and also foraging and plant craft ( I make plant tinctures and medicinal teas). We are always experimenting and learning new things and we hope that our passion for trying things out is contagious!

For our family, working and living together is a great opportunity to learn new languages, experience different cultures and exchange skills. Given our rural location, it is very important to us that our son has the chance to live with a diverse range of people from different places and cultures and that he grows up with an open mind and heart and a global perspective.

We always try hard to strike a good balance between work, excursions and time off and relaxation and our lifestyle is focused on physical, spiritual and emotional nourishment. I am passionate about healthy cooking and love sharing recipes or techniques with people.

Guests can paint, garden, hike, practice yoga, play music, surf, talk and share any number of small enriching experiences with us. We really hope that more than simply learning a new skill, anyone staying with us comes away feeling enriched, nourished and inspired.

There is always a lot going on in our house so help can look like; gardening, gathering wood, supporting us with our small DIY projects, cooking or helping with general tasks. We are very practical people and have learnt a lot of skills over the years which is very empowering. We are therefore very excited to help people develop their own skills and take the opportunity to experience a more autonomous approach to life. Please be assured though that for everything that is beyond our current skill set, we use local professional tradespeople.

More than practical help though, what we love about inviting guests into our home is the opportunity to get to know people. We believe that everyone has something to offer and that the most fulfilling things in life are human connections and relationships.

Having lived in Spain for over twenty years, our family is able to offer a language exchange of English or Spanish to guests. My son is learning Japanese and I am also interested in experiencing other languages.

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

We offer a comfortable double bedroom with double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and a sitting area with table. The room is big enough to accommodate a writing table if, for a longer stay, that would make life better. This room is part of our family home but has private access to a large bathroom with shower and bath. There is a separate toilet on the same floor. We also have a smaller room with a double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers if two guests do not want to share the same room.

We invite people to eat as many meals with us as they want as there is no bar or restaurant in our village. As a family we have a weekly meeting to plan meals, make shopping lists, plan outings and events etc. and we like to include guests in these meetings so that there is clear communication about all of our needs and expectations. Tea, coffee and drinks etc. are freely available, although please note that we do not drink alcohol in our home or smoke. We eat an omnivore diet focused on healthy, sustainable dishes which mainly consists of plant based meals supplemented with some meat, dairy and fish. Much of our food is vegan and vegetarian and we are happy to host guests with any diet.

We are also happy to share our large attic and barn if guests want to do yoga or have a creative project in mind etc.

We can offer lifts to the local town and we are open to facilitate visits further afield so that visitors can explore the local area. There is a limited bus service from our village to Luarca, which has a train and bus station with great, cheap service and connections to all major towns and cities in the North of Spain and beyond. Our home is 45 minutes from Asturias airport and we do consider airport pickups for longer stays.

We live in the countryside so around our house there are plenty of walks and lots of woods and rivers to explore and enjoy. Please note that our nearest bar or cafe are a ten minutes drive away. There is a limited bus service from our village to Luarca and we are happy to coordinate lifts as we often have to go to the town for supplies and afterschool activities. There is a public gym, sauna and gym in Luarca which is very economic and easily accesible. Luarca has a train and bus station with regular, cheap services and connections to all major towns and cities in the North of Spain and beyond. Luarca also has a very picturesque fishing port, walled beach and a natural beach within easy walking distance of its center, museums, a botanical garden and a bustling shopping center.

The provinces capital, Oviedo, is about an hour and half away by car and is a stunning city to visit with a great number of museums, theatres, galleries and restaurants. Gijon, Santander, Coruña and Bilboa are also great places to consider visiting as is of course Santiago de la Compostela and nearby Portugal.

For surfers or those wanting to learn, we enjoy three amazing local breaks and dozens of beautiful, unspoilt surf spots all along the coast. There are also riding schools, surf schools, kayak rentals for river excursions and paddle boarding locally available.

Previous guests have trail run through the local mountains, taken part in rugby tournaments, collected wild flowers and made dried flowers arrangements, hiked and swam, explored wild life reserves and done alfresco painting... we are happy to facilitate what we can and help people make the most of their free time with us.
