¿𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙖 𝙍𝙞𝙘𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙐𝙧𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙧𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙛𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙨? Come join us and get a good balance of the city's practicality + nature's energy while learning about agroecology, non violent communication, agroforestry, probiotics and more. 𝐖𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 😄💚

📝 𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐈𝐓 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐃: +10 years ago I learned how food and stuff was produced and decided I didn't wanted to contribute to that world. So I started learning about Permaculture, Homesteading, Agroecology... just to see how people were trying to plant their own food and live healthier and more sustainable lives, but they all were starting from scratch. I thought a network was needed to join forces and knowledge and that's how I funded the Costa Rican Urban Garden Network, which now has grown to more than 9.5k members in the country. By now more than a group of people, we've become tribe 💞🌏

🙌🏽 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢: In our project we want to show people it is possible to do a lot, even in an urban setting. We want to demonstrate how to live more sustainably reusing, recycling and reducing consumption. We promote urban gardens with fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants, root crops... we harvest rainwater, have a compost toilet, recycle, reuse and repurpose materials, we prepare some of our own food and we open the space for people to learn how to apply Permaculture and Homesteading in their own life. We also visit other projects and give them a hand to start planting or troubleshoot common problems. Sometimes we just visit to share a meal and catch up. The network it’s more than just technical knowledge, we’ve become a family 💚

🗾 𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: Our base is in the East side of the Central Valley about 25 minutes 🚙 from the mountains, 20 minutes 🚌away from downtown, 40 minutes from the Airport 🛫 We also visit and teach in others projects, part of the Urban Garden Network. Our garden currently has 5 banana varieties, plantains, yucca, lemon, raspberries, 4 mint varieties, papayas, lemon drop mangosteen, Juanilama, lavender, different varieties of basil, chives, fennel, pigeon peas, coffee, chicasquil, lettuce, broccoli, peppers, hot peppers and more. We are constantly adding new plants. Thanks for taking the time to read our profile, add this keyword to your message so we know you did: 𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰.

🐶 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘: The house is shared with 2-4 people, one dog and a cat.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐍 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬:

💰 𝐍𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲: We offer accessible material, courses, workshops and talks, that can contribute to the improvement of people's lives without the limitation of the money. We coordinate community activities open to the public that contribute to the well-being and improvement of the lifestyle of the participants and residents of the area.

🥗 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫:We founded the Costa Rican Urban Garden Network, which promotes the planting of edible plants and trees, giving preference and priority to local varieties. The promotion of these spaces occurs both in public access areas and in private spaces, creating an abundance of food for self-consumption and sharing.

💪🏽 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠: We promote physical and mental health at the individual and community level through workshops and audiovisual material. We share information with people so that they can make better decisions as well as support each other in our common growth.

🤹‍♂️ 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: We seek equity in our projects by giving voice and vote to people who represent different groups in a frequent and relevant way.

🚿 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We educate, design and install gray and black water treatment systems, as well as promoting the use of rainwater.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: Our activities seek to create spaces for inclusion of all people, as we consider everyone deserve access to nutritious, delicious food, water and clean air, as well as spaces for recreation and growth. We have a lot of activities that can be payed in different currencies, through an exchange or even for free. We teach for all ages and constantly challenge ourselves to be able to make our classes accessible to all genders, learning types, locations, physicals/mental conditions... I̲n̲e̲q̲u̲a̲l̲i̲t̲i̲e̲s̲ ̲a̲r̲e̲ ̲n̲o̲t̲ ̲o̲n̲l̲y ̲e̲c̲o̲n̲o̲m̲i̲c̲, and we want to fight that in a proactive, loving way. We want everyone to feel seen and welcome.

🚞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: With the Costa Rican Urban Garden Network we promote earth friendly strategies, we help people design their homes or businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and air/water pollution, and instead take advantage of available resources in a more regenerative way.

🚚 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We design systems that cycle resources, take advantage of discarded materials and upcycle whenever there is opportunity.

🐬 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: We use and promote the installation of systems for the use and treatment of gray and black water. For example: rain gardens, compost toilets, rainwater collection tanks. We educate on respectful ways to use ocean resources and motivate people to always prefer local self grown foods.

🏡 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝: We contribute to the planting of local varieties of plants and trees that support the fauna and flora of the region. We apply policies for the protection of all types of life, we do not use agrochemicals that negatively affect biological and microbiological life.

🏢𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬: We work on educational programs with the local governments to reach a larger audience, leading towards a mass adaptation of strategies for the promotion of earth care and community living.

🕸 𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗦: During your visit we'll probably have some groups and do tours to other cool projects. Some are close, some others can be near the beach, the volcanoes or the mountains. You are welcome to join (̲t̲r̲a̲v̲e̲l̲ ̲e̲x̲p̲e̲n̲s̲e̲s̲ ̲n̲o̲t̲ ̲i̲n̲c̲l̲u̲d̲e̲d̲)̲. These are opportunities for cultural exchange as you get to know other people and how they work in their projects. Many times you get to taste their food and have great conversations. Also some of the farms have amazing views, a nearby river or a beach.

🍅 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧: On the weekends we go to the farmers market, we try to move around different markets to enjoy different products and get to know more farmers. We also go get our other ingredients to bulk stores in the Central Market in San José or some other cool bulk/health store.

👅 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗚𝗘: We also host people that speak different language, so you get to practice or learn: Spanish, French Portuguese, Costa Rican sign language.

The house is kind of big and sometimes we are overwhelmed by the amount of maintenance it needs, on one hand, and cool projects we're invited to participate in, in the other. We want to create a fun, inclusive learning space for locals and visitors on topics like Permaculture, Agroecology, Homesteading, Community living.

We are currently working in these projects, but we are open to doing other things. Please share your skills and we can always design together something that feels enjoyable and fulfilling.

  • Hébergement

🏡 Currently we offer a small private room in the attic with a mattress and a small table. There's space to camp in the garden and sometimes a second shared room. We share the kitchen and have 1 shared shower + shared compost toilet + 1 outdoor shower. You have access to some of the shared spaces in the house. Some of the shared spaces are only available during certain hours/days, depending on the house occupancy.

💻 Fast internet (100/25Mbps), good enough for simultaneous video calls and simultaneous streaming. There's very good cell phone coverage. 𝗪𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗯𝗶 as the best 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 for the country.

🍜 We don’t offer full meals, but you have access to the garden products (bananas, plantains, yucca, lemon, raspberries, mint, juanilama, lavender, chives, fennel, pigeon peas, chicasquil, lettuce, peppers and more) and can use the shared kitchen to prepare your meals during your stay. We do provide some basic ingredients (rice, lentils, salt, sugar, oil… it can change according to the season), and of course we do cook together sometimes 😀.

💚 This is a Vegan/Vegetarian friendly house: we prefer our guest to reduce consumption of meat or not to consume. Shared kitchen can't be used to prepare or store meat base meals out of respect to the other users of the utensils and space. 🙏🏽

🚍 As we are so close from downtown San Jose you can go enjoy Museum, theaters, parks, restaurants or urban tours around the city.

🚵🏽‍♀️We are also close to the mountains so it's easy to take a bus and be there in 20-30 minutes and do some hiking, horseback ride, or just enjoy the views.

🚐 There's more than 5 bus lines 100m (300ft) away from the main house and another 5 lines just 500m (1600ft). If you prefer to walk there's a lot of nearby places you can easily get to in 30 minutes or less, including San José Downtown.

🌇 Museums are free on Wednesdays and a lot are just 10-20 minutes by bus from the house.
