    Description

    Hi travellers 👋

We are looking for beautiful souls who would be keen to come help us with our day-to-day and other bigger projects here! We are an eclectic bunch of unsupervised idiots with a dream, a vision and a few powertools.

    THE PROJECT

We are currently building a self-sufficient village for unhoused people, where they can build their own tiny homes and run their own agriculture co-op. For now we are mainly working on improving the space, rehabilitating the land and getting things started. We are hoping to be able to kick things off by the end of 2026 !

At the moment there is a lot of admin work to stay on top of, renovations going on in different parts of the property.. we are also working on syntropic agroforestry in our garden.

    WHO WE ARE

Emma - director. Formerly homeless ratbag who decided getting housed again should be easier. Started this as a tiny project in WA and shifted over to Wombat Creek at the beginning of 2025 to get it off the ground. Does most of the drilling, chaos goblin, mediocre farmer, excellent cook. Loves to see you shine.

Oceane - French gal who came to Australia 2 years ago with absolutely no idea this was what she was going to find in the land down under. Fell in love with the people and the project in a heartbeat, just recently back in Wombat Creek after traveling around for a while and decidedly in for the long run. Takes care of most of the admin, plays mediocre guitar, wears hippie pants. Loves to see you thrive. (this is me who you'll be talking to if you message us !)

    THE SPACE & LOCATION

We are located up the hills about a 40-minute drive from Grafton (NSW) on a beautiful property surrounded by nature and wildlife. The site is completely off-grid with solar power and rainwater collection. We have all the necessary commodities for everyone (electricity, hot water, washing-machine, WiFi...) and a lot of funny perks such as a sauna, big lovely dam, several types of woodfire ovens (did someone say pizza night ?) and much more !

The house itself is the definition of cozy with a nice indoor lounge for movie nights, indoor & outdoor kitchen, office space, cute bathroom etc...

    The property currently has :

    - Two permanent residents in the house (that's us !)
    - A lovely family of four who live in a bus on site
    - People and friends who come to visit, give us a hand from time to time etc..
    - Three glorious chooks
    - Jackie, the best puppy in the world
    - Soon to join the team : a sassy kitty and maybe another pup !

Lots of beautiful bushwalks in the direct vicinity of the property and in the area, rivers and national parks nearby.

    WHAT WE PROVIDE

Travellers who come here get their own space in The Nook - which is a little mezzanine hut next to the house that can comfortably accommodate up to two people traveling together (choose your own bed !). We also have plenty of space for campervans/caravans/motorhomes for those who have their own home on wheels.

You will of course be fed as many meals a day your body requires, have unlimited access to all facilities on site and we have a bunch of vehicles you are welcome to for your trips in town if you don't have a car. You will be welcome to join the gang for chill nights, board games, moolit walks, apéro (we love a bit of French débauche here) or retreat into your space whenever you feel like it.

But most importantly here you will find care, love and a safe space. Anyone is welcome here regardless of who they are or where they come from, as long as they respect other people's space and boundaries and genuinely want to help. We will always welcome your needs, your questions and your ideas : you matter here !

    WHAT WE NEED YOU FOR

At the moment we are mainly looking for one or two people who can support us with our day-to-day chores (cooking, grocery shopping, keeping the space clean, caring for the chooks, general maintenance...) as we have a lot on our plate with getting the non-profit started. Any special skills such as carpentry/electrical skills, gardening, fencing etc.. would be really cool but not expected. You are more than welcome to give a hand with whatever is going on, mess around with the tools in the shed and build your own little projects on the site. Let's learn from each other !

There are no rules, no schedules and no high expectations. We usually work in the mornings and rest in the afternoons, but mainly we work at the rythm of our bodies & minds. This could also be very different for you if you focus your work on mealtimes or other tasks. We will not be behind you to check that you are 'doing enough hours' or anything like that. We will trust in you that you feel like you are being involved and useful - and that is enough for us.

You don't need to have a car, although you might want to have a drivers license if you want to enjoy your stay here (nearest small town is 15 minutes away, Grafton is a 40-minute drive). You will be welcome to use our vehicles. Please ask how we can help you get here if you don't have your own transportation. Pets welcome as long as they are non-aggressive to people, other pets & wildlife. If they are of feline descent, please plan to keep them indoors or tethered so they don't harm the local wildlife.

This is an everyone-welcome, queer-friendly and consent-based project. We expect from everyone who decides to join us that they do not judge, discriminate, exclude or harm. Everyone's space, boundaries and needs are respected here. We exchange, communicate and check-in with each other on a daily basis to make sure everything is running smoothly and everyone is happy !

    ****************************

If you have any more questions or are keen to come spend some time here with us, please drop us a message and we'll have a chat ! Looking forward to meeting you <3

Professionally, Emma has worked as a cook, a coach, a writer, a farmer, and a teacher. She has special interests in the history of science, van-building, fly-fishing and fly-tying, community-building, soil ecology, foraging, mycology, and native vegetation.

There is a lot here to play with if you're into music, arts & crafts, bodywork, reading... bring your own thing to the table or explore with what we have here.

We go into town, hiking in the mountains, take day trips to the beach, and visit festivals from time to time. You are more welcome to join and/or suggest activities !

  • Aide

    Aide

We're hosting friends and travellers right now : shopping, cleaning, building fences/paths, gardening cooking, eating and playing. Tiny-home building will start later in the year !

Right now, because we're just getting started, we need hands on deck with all sorts of things. You could be helping us with :

    • Daily life - cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, organizing...
    • Getting the farm going – prepping the land, planting stuff, learning about our cool farming methods (syntropic agroforestry)...
    • Lending a hand with building - mud huts, tree houses, a shed, a kiln, swales and trenches, outdoor kitchen...
    • Being part of the community vibe – helping us create a welcoming and supportive space !

We like to do two tasks in the morning, and then take ourselves to the shade of the house during the hotter part of the day - cooking, reading, crafting, making art, writing, doing puzzles. Y'know, chilling. Depending on what we need you for around here you might have a completely different way of organizing your day. Also depends on how you function - morning or evening person, abled or disabled... again you are welcome here just the way you are and we will make it work !

We would LOVE to host deaf and HOH workawayers. We're only beginners in AUSLAN and looking to improve. We'd love to learn ASL and any other sign languages that come by ! We love foreign languages here and are would be very keen to learn yours ! Happy to help you with your English and/or your French

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

Travelers here usually stay in The Nook, which is a cozy mezzanine hut with two beds. There is one bathroom in the house to share. Campervans/motorhomes etc welcome anywhere !

We cook a big meal for dinner for everyone to share. Lunch varies - sometimes it's everyone for themselves and sometimes we make salads/pasta/whatever. Breakfast varies too. Some mornings we cook - pancakes, or beans & eggs on toast, or french toast with bananas or who knows ! Other mornings we just have cereal or a piece of toast. There is always plenty to eat and if you happen to be cooking, the kitchen is yours to have fun in !

If you come to stay, we will find out what you like to eat, to make sure we have lots of things in the house that you like and your dietary restrictions are met.

    Autres infos...

We are disabled-friendly and covid-conscious. We have testing equipment here and masks for anyone who tests positive.

Tell us all about your needs when we communicate and we'll meet them as best we can. We have both travelled as workawayers in the past and had our share of good & bad experiences. We want this to be a great place for you.

We're in Northern NSW (Bundjalung Country), not Western Australia as the profile sometimes says 🤷🏼‍♀️
