Hello!
Jeff and I are looking for a mature, responsible and independent person—or a couple—who would enjoy making our home their base for approximately 2–3 months.
This opportunity would suit someone who is self-sufficient, loves dogs, and is comfortable helping to maintain a large private home and property. Perhaps you are taking a break from longer-term travel, working on a writing project, or simply looking for a comfortable place to settle for a while and experience life in the Toronto area.
I divide my time between Markham and Stratford, so what I really need is someone who can make life easier and help keep things running smoothly, both when we are home and when we are away.
Day-to-day help would include things such as:
Caring for and spending time with our dogs
Making and keeping areas of the house genuinely clean, tidy and organized
Deep cleaning and housekeeping as needed
Helping us organize, declutter and gradually downsize
Some yard work
Snow removal when necessary for safety
Generally keeping an eye on the house and property when we are away
We hope eventually to sell our home, so “downsizing in situ” is very much the plan! We are not expecting someone to arrive knowing everything. One reason we prefer a 2–3 month stay is that it gives you time to learn the routines, get to know the dogs and the house, and become comfortable enough to make sensible decisions independently when we aren't there.
It is a large home, and we also have a long-term roommate who knows the ropes, so you wouldn't be completely on your own. And I am always only a WhatsApp message away.
Markham is a wonderful base for exploring Toronto and southern Ontario, and we've been very grateful for the Workawayers who have stayed with us over the years. For this particular stay, though, we are especially looking for someone with the maturity, initiative and sense of responsibility to help maintain a home without needing a lot of supervision.
A couple of practical notes:
Because of my health considerations, we respectfully ask that you wear a mask in shared areas if you are feeling unwell or have recently travelled, or otherwise maintain some physical distance from Jeff and me until you're confident you are well.
Food will not routinely be included in this exchange. I'm always happy to share a meal from time to time when I'm around, but because I am frequently away and have some dietary/health restrictions, you would need to be comfortable planning and providing your own meals.
If you're looking for a longer-term place to lay your head, genuinely love animals, enjoy looking after a home and property, and are the kind of person who notices what needs doing and simply gets on with it, we'd be very happy to hear from you. :)

By all accounts, even though I think Jeff and I are old and boring, people generally like us and have good things to say about staying with us. Sadly, I did get covid during Delta and have a long haul symptoms and had a vaccine reaction so I do ask that people still wear a mask when in close proximity with me. But I think they could learn a lot of what not to do with their lives, as well as how to enjoy life.

So the details are being worked out as we move forward. If you are mature, responsible, actually good at and enjoy cleaning and maintaining a house, organizing, and being independent and self directed, and doing yard work/gardening as well, that would be great.

Great for individual who wants a stable home base from which to tour around. Depending on which room is available in the house, you will have a choice of places to stay. We have posted our least good one... which is in the pictures and you will see. It's a bathroom shared with one other person, but you have your own place for your own things and your own sink... The other places in the house have their own bathrooms.. So the worst you would get is what is pictured.

Markham Ontario is 40 minutes North of Toronto and a great launching off place for many of Ontario's great attractions. Our best line is within walking distance
