    Description

I have two major project type needs and a number of ongoing needs of assistance. I am currently in particular need of someone with professional or advanced amateur dressmaking skills (hand and machine) to handle major alterations and design remakes on 2-3 dresses, as well as minor alterations. I also need someone to help me develop a commercial website to support an online store on Amazon and help getting the store set up, develop company brand names and logos for private labeling and help develop local contacts to source Thai products. I already have 2 domains and a host, along with basic websites. My ongoing needs include massage, ability to to clean-up and organize my Pinterest account, in addition to animal care, cooking (not cooking is a deal breaker!), cleaning, and organizing, as well as IT problem solving and website design assistance and modifications. If you make a major contribution to my needs, I may waive the food fee, but do appreciate you chipping in on food costs in light of my very small pension.

I am an American woman in my early 70's, who has lived in the Asia Pacific area for almost 30 years (Suva, Fiji, and Chiang Mai, Thailand) . I currently live alone with my three adorable sugar gliders, my 25-year-old daughter having left a little over 6 years ago to live, study (Portland State University) and work (Starbucks) in Portland, Oregon, USA. My general health is good, except for disabilities related to two unsuccessful knee replacements in my left knee creating significant mobility and balance issues. I currently have vision issues (cataracts) about to be resolved in October.

I live in a small but comfortable house with gated yard in an upmarket, gated housing development (moo baan) with a great salt water pool, tennis courts, award-winning Thai restaurant, coffee shop, and an Oasis Spa resort. It is a quiet, peaceful development. I am a 15-20 minute car ride from the city center, longer in heavy traffic.

I am retired on a very small pension, after 21 years as a Chicago banker (Trust Dept portfolio Mgr, International Banker, and Corporate Banker) and 21 years as an academic (teaching mainly in an MBA Program at the Univ. of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji). I love reading, SCUBA diving (PADI Rescue Diver), am an Advance Class Ham Radio Operator (not recently active), traveling and hosting, I love animals, and am particularly interested in scientific, medical, health, cultural, and environmental issues. I used to be active in photography and I now have the equipment to get back into it. I adopted my daughter as a 2 month old baby in Fiji, and she is the light of my life. I have 3 pet female sugar gliders (suggies). and several years ago lost my second dog, this time to a Malayan Pit Viper bite. Both dogs came with us from Fiji where we rescued them at very young ages (2 1/2 weeks to almost three months of age). The older suggies are a mother and daughter, I rehomed as adults for a departing expat family, and a two-year-old I raised from 8 days old. I also periodically foster an adorable teacup Pomeranian (black and white), named Dora, who belongs to a traveling friend! I am hoping to get a new puppy soon!

In college I spent my Junior Year at the Univ. of Stockholm and also have good friends in Finland, resulting from my family hosting a Finnish girl for a year as a high school exchange student. I have personally traveled extensively and have lived overseas continuously for nearly 31years (Fiji and Thailand).

I do need assistance with cooking when I have guests! Not cooking is a deal breaker! I look to guests to take over my kitchen! As for diet, I previously called myself a "flexitarian". I have been mainly an ovo-lacto vegetarian, but I have recently added a good bit of meat to my diet after my doctor recommended a high protein diet. I now eat chicken, fish, and red meat in relatively small amounts. I also enjoy vegetarian food.

I provide free accommodation and 3 meals a day for regular volunteers (5hours) , but do request a contribution toward food costs of 150 THB a day (about US$5 per day) per person. This does not cover full costs of food but helps a lot. I provide lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. for cooking. For workawayers who significantly exceed my expectations and make a major contribution to my needs with special skills and unusually hard work, I may waive the food fee. For house/pet sitters, I do not provide food, since I am not home to buy food, so do not charge a food fee (and only ask for 3 hours) . I do leave supplies and cash to feed my sugar gliders. I look to pet sitters to keep the house nice and clean and take good care of my pets but don’t normally expect extra work on my behalf while I am away.

Please let me know in advance about your dietary preferences and restrictions. It is also helpful if you have a drivers license (preferably international) and can drive me places it is hard for me to get to on my own. Driving is highly desirable but not essential.

I can help and advise people what to see and do in the Chiang Mai area to learn about Thai culture. I can also provide a touch of American culture and help speaking English, and share my knowledge of the many places and cultures I have visited. You will also learn about the fascinating little marsupials called sugar gliders and have an opportunity to care for them!

Please do not apply unless you read to the end of my profile! I will assume you are aware of all requirements and conditions in my profile and be prepared to accept them. I also require a detailed profile from you giving me a good sense of your background, skills, capabilities, and personality. I also look for a personalized letter outlining how you can meet my specific needs! I do not normally accept visitors sending obvious cut and paste letters.

I am especially targeting people with special skills I really need help with: major IT problem solving, web design, sewing and mending, massage, major deep cleaning of house or garden development and planting, plumbing, electricians, car mechanics, etc. including skills I may not know I need until I see them written down!

Cooking is essential when I am hosting, as I seldom cook anymore. I do a lot of snacking instead! It is also hard for me to stand long enough to cook a meal as I have some mobility issues. Basic skills I am looking for from everyone include cooking, household help, and indoor pet care. An international driving licence is highly desirable but not required.

I need workawayers who are self motivated and can see what needs to be done around the house and yard and then just do it, rather than requiring detailed instruction.

I prefer assignments in the 2-4 week range with possible extensions arranged after you arrive. This allows both parties to evaluate how comfortable we are with each other, space permitting, before extending. I do sometimes take people for shorter times , space and my needs permitting.

I often don’t know my plans a couple months out and therefore normally cannot commit to guests wanting to reserve space months ahead. I have also found people reserving space months ahead usually change their dates, sometimes repeatedly, and may cancel at the last minute, after I have turned away a number of requests for the same time. On the other hand, I welcome last minute requests, including same day and next day requests, as long as I have space!

    Hébergement

I have one spare room, which my daughter uses only rarely. If I have old friends or relatives visiting, I put them in that room. It is empty most of the year, however., so that room is available most of the time. It is the master bedroom with an attached bath. It has two very comfortable twin beds: with a rollaway cot also available (good for kids). I also have a comfortable double bed in a fairly private area I call my nook. There are also several good air beds that can be used on the living room or guest room floor and a comfy couch for occasional overflow. I provide bedding. When I have multiple guests, the guest room will first be allocated to those with the greatest need (e.g. a family with a young child) or may be used as a dorm. I need people flexible about sleeping arrangements, as they may need to be changed, according to the needs of other visitors I may have. A hot shower is available. You may use my washer to wash clothes and hang them out. My dryer is available at a small charge to cover its high electricity costs.

I am almost next door to the Night Safari and the Royal Botanical Park, with a variety of restaurants around. I am not very far from major grocery and superstores. However, there is no regular public transport running by my house. For a moderate fee you can use the neighborhood (moo baan) facilities such as excellent salt water pool and tennis courts. If desired, I can also help you polish up your English and teach you about sugar gliders (adorable, fascinating little marsupial creatures!). There are a number of good restaurants in the area!

I am especially looking for travelers who are honest, friendly, have a good sense of humor, and can relax and make themselves at home. This is a "help yourself and make yourself at home" household! I also need volunteers who can be flexible about changing sleeping arrangements when I have multiple guests! I look for guests eager to help around the house, identifying what needs to be done and just doing it!

My house is 15-20 minutes drive from downtown, just 10 minutes south of the airport in the SW corner of Chiang Mai, a block from the city limits with Hang Dong. I can get you to town most days but you usually need to find your way back in the late afternoon/evening. Recommend you rent a scooter, which will make getting around easy and quick, if you are comfortable on a motor scooter. If not, Grab provides excellent low cost service and I can recommend a very nice driver fluent in English who drives privately and is also a Grab driver. Grab rides into town tend to run about 100 baht during the day, higher at night.

I do not smoke and my house is totally non-smoking (I have asthma). My property is expected to remain free of illicit drugs, including recreational drugs. I had workaway guests who spent a week in prison and had to go to court and pay a substantial fine for possession of a personal amount of marijuana, before being deported and banned from returning, so do not mess with any form of drugs while in Thailand! They hired a good attorney and were very lucky to get off so lightly!

I have high speed fiberoptic internet (175/80 MBS) you can use free and use internet TV. I tend to go to bed between 10 and midnight most nights and usually get up between 7 and 9 AM. I do not cook much - mainly snack - and love to be cooked for! I provide high quality food for cooking and eating.

Work hours and days are highly flexible by mutual agreement. You are unlikely to average as much as 5 hours a day (Workaway standard). I view you as a helpful family member rather than as an employee!
