*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️******️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️We are currently seeking a creative person to help us create a new mural for our new school wall.*****

This school is seeking reliable, motivated Workawayers who can stay for a minimum of 2 weeks so that the students have as much continuity as possible. The longer you can stay the better! We'd also be very happy to take volunteers who want to stay for several months! - visa extensions are available in Phnom Penh.

Our main focus is on teaching English, but we also welcome volunteers who can teach basic computer skills or who can help in other ways, such as improving the school (by gardening painting, decorating, and building), and helping with fundraising campaigns.
Please note that all volunteers may be required to teach English if our volunteer numbers are low.

The school is based in Kratie province and is about 10 minutes from Kratie town and the Mekong River. The school's director, Mr. Yuth, has lived in this area for several years, and over time he has watched children grow up with little or no English, and therefore, poor job prospects. He wanted to change this and offer the children of Kratie Province a better future. In January 2016, Mr. Yuth opened the School, built a house for the volunteers, and started lessons for underprivileged children from surrounding villages.

In Cambodia, the economy is mainly based on tourism and agriculture. However, in the public schools of Kratie, students aren't taught much English. Therefore, the goal is to enable them to learn English and gain some basic IT skills, which will give them better job prospects and a brighter future.

The school receives no financial support from the Government and instead relies solely on donations for improvements and volunteers for teaching.

Aside from the English school, Mr. Yuth runs an NGO that works closely with vulnerable groups, farmers, women, and children by implementing sustainable projects to improve their living conditions. This is a long-established organization which has been in operation since 1993. Volunteers might also be involved with work for this project as different needs arise.

A Workaway stay in Kratie is an opportunity to experience rural Cambodia, as few tourists ever will.

In our village, there are no tourists. The local people are very welcoming, ready with smiles and "hellos", and the local children are always keen to practice their English with volunteers.

Volunteers will be living in the community, seeing 'real Cambodia', and learning how the locals really live - visiting the local market, eating local food and interacting with local people. Sometimes, there are even opportunities to attend local activities such as Karaoke nights, and ceremonies such as weddings, birthday parties or the opening of a new house.

In addition, volunteers have the chance to learn about the local way of life, agriculture from local farmers, and socialize with local people.

During volunteer's free time and on the weekends, Kratie is a lovely town to explore!

Volunteers can visit the town, take a trip to see the river dolphins, visit Kho Trong Island (and maybe even stay a night there in a home-stay or guest house), visit Sambok Mountain and the monkeys there, discover the forest, villages or ancient temples.

A must-see experience in this area is the 'Mekong Discovery Trail', which is a series of day trips from Kratie Town to explore the Mekong.

One recommended trip is the '100 Pillar Watt and Koh Phdau Trail' - a 35 km day trip to Sambour, to see Wat Sor Sor Mouy Roy.

(More information can be found by googling 'things to do in Kratie', and 'Mekong Discovery Trail').

Volunteers could even go further afield to see more of Cambodia...
Visit Mondulkiri or Ratanakiri- both easy to do as a weekend trip.

We are looking for volunteers to teach English and basic computer skills. We are also accepting volunteers with backgrounds in marketing and other important project roles. Please note that while you may apply for a role other than teaching - our main need is for teachers and you might be asked to teach if we do not have enough teachers when you arrive.

If you have experience in social media strategy planning, marketing and communications, writing proposals for funding or web analytics, we'd love to hear from you!

TEACHING ENGLISH and BASIC IT. (typically need 6 volunteers at a time):

Classes are held at various times throughout the day.
Each volunteer will be required to teach a minimum of 2, 1 hour, classes per day.

Teaching at the home-based school - Level 1 - 5 for children and young adults, and conversation and grammar classes for adults, and at other classrooms. For our other classes away from our base, there are bicycles and 1 motorbike for the volunteers to use. All volunteers must be able to ride a bicycle, and fit enough to ride to our Country Class which is a 30 minute ride on dirt roads.

Teaching experience is greatly appreciated but if you are new to teaching, don't worry, a good standard of English and enthusiasm and a commitment to help the kids are all that we require.

Lessons can include role-playing, singing songs, conversation and any other ideas you have. There is a curriculum for each level, and a monthly lesson plan for volunteers to follow. We ask each teacher to keep a record of what they've taught, and how the lesson was received by the students, every day in the appropriate level's log book so that we can monitor each student's progress.
If you have good basic computer and typing skills, our students would love to learn.
Most poor children at the school don't have access to a computer, and as we know in this day and age, IT skills are essential both in and outside the workplace. Teaching the kids basic typing skills, how to research on the internet, and how to use Facebook, etc, will go a long way to help their prospects in the future.
Each student studies computer and typing once or twice a week.

Primarily based in the office (5 minutes from the school and volunteer house).

We are always working to increase awareness of our project and raise funds for improving the school. Creative and marketing savvy people who can help with these initiatives are always welcome. Currently, we are looking to produce promotional materials, posters, and donation boxes, etc , and trying to reach out into the local community and to local businesses, such as hotels, etc, to support and promote our project.
We are also exploring ways to reach out to schools in the UK/USA/Australia, etc, for fundraising.
We are also fundraising to extend the school and so give this great opportunity to more young people.

From time to time (when funds allow for materials), help is needed to improve the school site, classrooms, and volunteer house. This includes things like gardening, painting, DIY, building work, etc. Many volunteers take on some of these projects while they are here in addition to teaching.

We appreciate volunteers who can share their skills to improve our NGO staff's abilities and help our organization to reach its goals. Experts in agriculture, water sanitation, environmental tourism, climate change, health and nutrition, women empowerment and gender equality, child welfare, grant applications and funding proposals, etc, would be great for this project!

We ask our volunteers to help for a minimum of 3 hours per day from Monday to Friday. There's plenty of free time, and weekends are free to explore all that Kratie has to offer.

In return, we provide accommodation in our newly built volunteer house located right above the school.
The house has two shared bedrooms, each with 3 single beds - Khmer style, mattresses and mosquito nets.
Shared communal areas include a bathroom, kitchen, and a large sitting area. This is a traditional Khmer style house, with some Western elements added. Plumbing is basic, and there is no hot water. The kitchen has no fridge, as is normal in Cambodia, as electricity is very expensive here so the cost of running one is too high. Ice is available to keep things cool.

We will provide 3 meals a day to all volunteers at a cost of US$ 5.00 per day :
Khmer meals, or ingredients to cook vegetarian/vegan meals.

There is no wifi at the house!
There is a coffee shop and a hotel in the area where you can have free wifi. For onsite internet, local SIM cards are cheap and easy to use, and can be bought from Mr. Yuth's small shop located next door to the volunteer house (the shop also sells drinks and snacks, etc).

Volunteers also have free shared access to one motorbike and some bicycles for getting to and from town. Please note that volunteers are responsible for all upkeep / repairs of bicycles. No locks are provided so you should bring your own,or they can bought cheaply at the market in Kratie.
Alternatively, volunteers can rent their own bicycle in the city for around $10-$15 per month, or $1 per day (motorbikes can be rented for $5-$6 per day). Tuk-tuks are also available in the town, or can be booked through Mr Yuth.

Minivans to Kratie leave from Phnom Penh Central Market at 6 am ( $6.25) and midday ( price varies) to our house. PP vans cannot be booked in advance but we can give advice on how and where to get them.
From Siem Reap ($10) Please contact us if you would like to arrange this and further details will be provided.

If you are coming from Phnom Penh airport, you can get a tuk tuk or taxi from the airport to Central Market (Phsar Thmei) and then the minivan to Kratie from there.
