    Description

We are a small, locally led organisation based in Barbuda, a beautiful and unique island in Antigua and Barbuda. Our work is focused on creating opportunities for our community while protecting and celebrating what makes Barbuda special. We work across culture, history, education, the environment and disaster resilience, with projects that are designed to have a lasting benefit for local people.

What we love most about Barbuda is its strong sense of community and connection to the land and sea. It is a peaceful, uncrowded island with beautiful beaches, wildlife, mangroves, the Codrington Lagoon and a rich history and culture. Life here is slower and more connected to nature, and visitors have the opportunity to experience a side of the Caribbean that is very different from a typical resort holiday.

Our team is small and very community-focused. The organisation is led by local directors Asha, Brandon and Cleo, supported by local staff Rashella, Joyann and Herring, community members, volunteers, young people and partners who contribute to different projects. Depending on the time of year, Workawayers may work alongside our programme team, volunteers, educators, environmental workers and community members.

We love welcoming people who are curious, adaptable and genuinely interested in learning from and contributing to the community. Workawayers will have the opportunity to get involved in meaningful projects, meet local people, learn about Barbuda's culture and environment, and experience everyday island life. In return, we hope they bring their own skills, ideas and perspectives and become part of our little community while they are here.

If you are looking for a meaningful experience, beautiful surroundings, a slower pace of life and the chance to contribute to a locally led organisation, Barbuda is a very special place to discover.

Life in Barbuda is very much about being outdoors. It is a tropical environment, so the climate is hot and humid, and mosquitoes and other insects are part of everyday island life. For this reason, we are looking for Workawayers who have experience travelling or working in tropical climates and who are genuinely comfortable with heat, outdoor conditions, insects and getting their hands dirty. This is not the right placement for someone who prefers a cool, indoor or highly structured environment.

  • Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

    Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

There are lots of opportunities to experience everyday life and culture in Barbuda, although activities are generally informal and depend on what is happening in the community during your stay.

**Food & local cuisine:** One of the best ways to experience Barbuda is through its food. You may get to try traditional local dishes featuring freshly caught fish and lobster, stews, fried dumplings and other home-cooked foods. Barbuda also has a strong hunting tradition, and traditional dishes can include land turtle, venison and guinea hen. Food is an important part of our culture and community, and sharing a meal is a great way to connect with local people.

**Community & cultural life:** Depending on the time of year, you may be able to experience events such as **Caribana in May/June**, fishing tournaments held throughout the year, community gatherings and other local events. Sunday church is also an important part of community life for many people.

**Island life:** We may take you to the beach, go fishing, explore different parts of the island or introduce you to local places and people. You may also experience some of the more informal aspects of Barbuda life — "liming" with friends, hanging out on the corner, watching basketball, or simply spending time chatting with members of the community.

**Sports & local traditions:** Horse racing is a popular community activity and races take place on Sundays when scheduled. You may also have the opportunity to learn about local fishing and hunting traditions or join community members in other outdoor activities.

These activities don't happen on a fixed schedule, so we can't promise that every activity will be taking place during your visit. However, **we will make an effort to keep you connected and let you know what is happening in the community while you are here.** The idea is for you to experience Barbuda as a local community rather than simply as a visitor staying on an island.

We are looking for Workawayers who are happy to get involved in a variety of hands-on community, environmental and educational activities. The type of work will vary depending on our current projects and the time of year.

Tasks may include helping with environmental projects such as mangrove planting, maintaining conservation areas, planting and caring for trees, coastal clean-ups and general outdoor work. You may also help with community activities, youth programmes, workshops, events, educational activities, cultural projects and basic preparation or set-up for our programmes.

Some days may involve working directly alongside our local team and community members, while on other days you may be given a task to work on independently. We value people who can take initiative, follow instructions and are comfortable adapting to changing plans.

There will also be opportunities to share your own skills. If you have experience in areas such as education, environmental conservation, photography, videography, social media, communications, construction, gardening, administration, event planning, research or other useful practical skills, we would love to learn from you.

This is an active placement, and much of the work takes place outdoors in Barbuda's hot tropical climate. You should be physically comfortable working in heat, around mosquitoes and other insects, and in natural or sometimes rough terrain. **Previous experience working or volunteering in a tropical environment is strongly preferred.**

Most importantly, we are looking for people who are willing to get stuck in, work respectfully with local people and understand that the purpose of the placement is to contribute to the community rather than simply experience the island as a tourist.

Workawayers will stay in our dedicated office space, which has been set up to provide a comfortable and secure place to stay during their time in Barbuda. The space includes a **bed, shower and bathroom facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and air conditioning**.

During your stay, the space will be yours to enjoy and we will respect your privacy. We do not expect to interrupt you or use the space while you are staying there. However, as this is also our working office, there may occasionally be a need for a member of our team to access something in the space. **If this is necessary, we will always give you advance notice whenever possible.**

You will have access to the kitchen so that you can prepare your own meals and have the flexibility to cook for yourself. We can also introduce you to local foods, restaurants and places to shop for fresh ingredients, and there may be opportunities to share meals with our team or members of the community.

We will provide a stipend so that guests can purchase what they need to be comfortable. We will also provide ingredients and invite our guests to dinner with the community whereby possible.

Barbuda occasionally experiences power cuts, although these are relatively infrequent. As part of island life, it is important to be prepared for the possibility of a temporary outage. We will provide **flashlights** and make sure you have what you need to stay comfortable and safe.

The accommodation is simple but comfortable and provides everything you need as a private base while you work, explore the island and experience life in our community.

**Independent travellers** who are comfortable exploring and enjoying the island on their own. You don't need to be accompanied by our team every day or have a structured social programme. We want you to feel confident finding your own way around, discovering Barbuda and making your own connections.

We especially welcome people who are **outgoing, friendly and open to meeting new people**. Barbuda is a small community, and making friends and getting to know local people is a big part of the experience. We will introduce you to people and let you know what is happening around the island, but we also encourage you to take the initiative to explore, socialise and make the most of your time here.

You should be comfortable spending time independently while also being willing to work as part of a team when needed. Being adaptable, self-motivated, respectful and able to entertain yourself are important qualities for this placement.

    House Rules

    * **Keep the space clean and tidy:** Please clean up after yourself and leave the accommodation as you found it.
    * **Kitchen:** Wash dishes and clean cooking areas after use. Store food properly to avoid attracting insects.
    * **Be mindful of water:** Water is a valuable resource on the island, so please avoid unnecessary use.
    * **Save electricity:** Turn off the air conditioning, lights and appliances when you leave the space.
    * **Respect quiet hours:** Please keep noise to a reasonable level, particularly at night.
    * **No smoking indoors.**
    * **Responsible drinking:** Alcohol is permitted, but please drink responsibly and behave respectfully.
    * **Visitors:** Please let us know in advance if you would like to have visitors at the accommodation.
    * **Respect local culture:** Barbuda is a conservative community. Please be respectful of local customs, values, dress and community expectations.
    * **Respect privacy:** We will respect your personal space, and we ask that you respect our team's privacy and belongings.
    * **Office access:** The accommodation is also our working office. Occasionally, we may need to access equipment, documents or supplies. We will give you advance notice whenever possible.
    * **Look after the environment:** Please dispose of rubbish properly and help us keep Barbuda clean and beautiful.
    * **Communication:** If you have a problem, are going to be late or cannot participate in an agreed activity, please communicate with us as soon as possible.
    * **Be reliable:** Workaway is an exchange. We expect you to participate responsibly in the activities and hours agreed with us.

Above all, we ask that Workawayers **be respectful, responsible, open-minded and willing to become part of the community while they are here.**

For Digital Nomads Barbuda can be a wonderful place to slow down, disconnect from the busy world and experience island life while continuing to work remotely. Our accommodation has air conditioning, a bed, shower and bathroom facilities, and a fully equipped kitchen, giving you a comfortable private space to work and live. However, please keep in mind that Barbuda is a small, remote island. Internet connectivity and electricity can occasionally be affected by island conditions, and there are infrequent power cuts. We provide flashlights and encourage digital nomads to plan accordingly, particularly if you have important deadlines or online meetings. This is also a great opportunity to step away from your screen. We encourage digital nomads to explore the island, visit the beach, meet local people, enjoy our food and culture, and take part in community activities when possible. We are particularly interested in independent digital nomads who can manage their own work schedule while contributing reliably to our agreed Workaway activities. If you enjoy balancing remote work with outdoor adventures, cultural experiences and meeting new people, you may really enjoy your time in Barbuda.
