*update February, 2022: If you are not vaccinated (which is totally fine with us) you will need to self-isolate on the farm for up to two weeks once you get here. If you are fully-vaccinated, no self-isolation is required. Either way, you will need to have an approved Self-Isolation Plan (SIP) before entering the NWT which is just a form you need to fill out and submit online. Read more on the self-isolation here .

We operate the only farm school in the Northwest Territories , which is also the largest farm in the area. Our mission is to develop regenerative agriculture in Canada's north to provide economic and food security for the many remote communities. Our farm operates as a non-profit with staff members who are friendly and all enthusiastic in their fields. The work itself is always changing; you will never be bored! The farm crew is largely self-managed, so the farm is a good place for volunteers who can work with minimal supervision, be adaptable, take initiative, and able to work on your own as well as with others.

We practice Holistic Management, Permaculture, Planned Rotational Grazing, No-Till Gardening (although we do till in some situations), forest-raised pigs, etc. Currently we produce a wide variety of vegetables as well as goats (meat and dairy), cattle, pigs (meat), Icelandic sheep (meat and wool), chickens (meat and eggs). We also have farm dogs.

In Spring, we are busy getting the greenhouse and garden ready for planting, as well as caring for and assisting our sheep & goats throughout the lambing & kidding season. In Summer, we usually offer a weekly vegetable box with our eggs and fresh baked bread for sale to locals. Majority of our animals are on pasture for summer and fall, and we do so by herding & coppicing for our sheep & goats, moving chicken tractors and setting up electric fence for our pigs. In Fall, there will be lots of harvesting, food preservation, and preparing winter animal shelters. Winters tend to be slower, with the major focus in keeping our animals healthy and happy in the barn.

We host in-person workshops at the farm, mostly attended by locals as well as students travelling from VERY remote communities. Most students are able to stay on-site in our yurts, so time is spent in getting accommodations ready, preparing snacks, and providing childcare for students as needed.

We butcher and slaughter our own animals on-site following humane slaughter practices. We milk our goats and shear our sheep for our own consumption. If you are interested in learning animal produce and products processing, this can likely be arranged depending on the time of the year and length of your stay.

The farm is buzzing with activity and we are happy to welcome volunteers to join us!!

    Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

Our farm is located in the traditional territory of the Katlodeeche First Nation, thus there are amazing opportunities to participate in a variety of cultural activities and events. These may include handgames, beading, traditional skills such as hide tanning, a wide variety of arts including making moccasins and mukluks, beading, moosehair tufting, fish scale art, basket weaving etc. Our property is bordered by the beautiful Hay River (which provides excellent swimming during the summer and fishing year round). 20 minutes to the south is Alexandra Falls, a huge waterfall. 20 minutes to the north is the Great Slave Lake, which has beautiful sandy beaches. In the springtime and summer there is lots to wild harvest including  mushrooms, juniper berries, poplar buds, spruce gum and berries.

We are located in one of the least populated areas of the world. The Northwest Territories is larger than France, Germany, and the UK combined, but has a total population of only 40,000 people! This in itself makes staying in the Northwest Territories a unique experience.

*️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️Please note that weekend help is often required at the farm. We try to rotate weekends but this cannot always happen special events require everyone's assistance. You will of course always have 2 days off per week but this is not always a weekend.*️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️ Volunteers will be required to work 5 hours a day for 5 days a week.

If you have a specific skill or area of interest please let us know. Skills we would love to recruit from volunteers: computer skills (web designing, social media), organization skills are always welcome, carpentry skills, chainsaw experience and a willingness to work with animals.

Helpers will get to stay in our yurts, campers, wall tents or lofts depending on the season and availability. Some spaces are shared, others are private, some spaces have electricity, others do not.  We use composting toilets as well as an outhouse. Our property is bordered by the beautiful Hay River (which provides excellent swimming during the summer). 20 minutes away to the south is Alexandra Falls, a huge waterfall. And 20 minutes to the north is the Great Slave Lake, which has beautiful sandy beaches. In the springtime there are lots of Morel mushrooms to pick in the forests nearby. In the winter many locals enjoy ice fishing, dog sledding, cross country skiing and cozying up by the fire with a good book.

In your time off, you can explore anywhere you want (remember that you will be surrounded by forest!), you can go to the nearby town (Hay River) which has groceries, restaurants, a bar, a recreation center, and a farmers market, you can go to see the local sights, etc. There are festivals and events to be enjoyed year round.
