Description
Welcome! We are an international couple with a daughter born in 2022 and a son born in 2024, and we recently bought an incredible home on 9 hectares in one of the most beautiful regions of Portugal. We have views of the ocean to the west, Monchique Mountain to the southeast, and Cercal Mountains to the north, with beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and the world class beaches and surf of Zambuxeira do Mar only a 10 minutes drive away. We have a forest of native corks, oaks, pines and medronhos that give delicious fruits, and a eucalyptus plantation for natural building. We have built a chicken coop & run for laying hens, and are seeding groundcovers for grazing sheep. We plan to start a permaculture food garden in the terraces in front of the house. We also have an ecological swimming pool, a complete ecosystem with frogs, fish, dragonflies and water filtering plants.
At the moment we are seeking someone who derives the greatest joy in life from being with and engaging the creativity and imagination of toddlers and babies, ideally someone with an education in early childhood development and an understanding of mindful, gentle child raising. A drivers license is necessary. Applicants who can provide references from previous childcare poisitions will receive priority.
We offer a spacious private bedroom in our beautiful home (on the opposite wing of the house to us), with large windows and organic bedding, radiant heating and a bathroom with a shower - our water is heated by an advanced solar system with a woodchip condenser backup for ample hot water throughout the year. We will provide you with food as we do for ourselves and our children - the best local organic produce, meat, eggs and dairy (sorry, probably not appropriate for a vegetarian/vegan, though we respect all diets!), and we drink spring water from our local spring & stored in glass (we strive to be plastic free). If you would enjoy helping also with developing the land, forest and gardens, that would be most welcome as well, and even more amazing if you are handy with repairs, building, arts & crafts, etc.
Sorry, smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property and the offer is not appropriate for smokers.
Due to our grey water system, we also use only natural soaps and detergents, with no perfumes or perfumed products (essential oils welcome).
About Us
Shy is a devoted dad, a somatic therapist, and a yoga teacher and therapist with decades of experience. He is also a musician, a practitioner of ayurvedic medicine, Thai massage and Buddhist meditation, and was a philosophy professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Giverny is a devoted mom, an accomplished singer, voice teacher and harmonium player. She leads women's and song circles.

Aide
In addition to childcare, we would most love help with any of these: cleaning, organizing, cooking, gardening and building - depending on your skills. If you have building/carpentry/plumbing skills, or if you can and want to take on longer hours leading gardening and animal projects, we are open to discussing the appropriate trade or compensation.
