  • Description

Interested in volunteering for an international non-governmental organization specializes in disaster relief and recovery? Our NGO has launched a bushfire relief program in Bega Valley. The organization effectively and efficiently addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by disasters. We communicate directly with local leaders and community members and then deploy our unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact by building resilient infrastructure and providing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene systems.

We arrived in Bega Valley nearly 18 months after the bushfire swept through the area. After our assessment, it was decided that our disaster recovery program would focus on providing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) facilities for community members that have been impacted by bushfire and who have been living without the basic amenities since late 2019. The project aims to provide basic WaSH facilities, consisting of a shed for water catchment, a water tank, and bathroom with a septic tank.

No building experience? That's okay! As a volunteer, you will be working along side our experienced staff, who will teach you the basic building skills needed to help erect metal sheds and install toilet flatpack kits on different properties throughout Bega Valley. Work includes internal cladding and fit-outs, installing water tanks, and completing various construction tasks around the properties and surrounding communities. Although our team is small, we have the opportunity to have a huge impact on the local community.

Come join us for a day, a week, or even a month!

During your volunteer experience here in Australia, you will be interacting with the local community in the village of Cobargo, near Bega, as well as with bushfire impacted families still living without the basic necessities. It can be a sensitive environment, however, the skills you develop erecting sheds, flatpack bathrooms and water tanks along with your natural enthusiasm empowers people and gives them hope. It is truly a privilege to be a part of this process.

We will focus on erecting sheds and toilet flatpack kits on the properties of landowners that have limited access to sanitation facilities, but task will sometimes include basic landscaping and fencing. We are also engaging a number of small community projects, such as building a garden shed at the local community garden.

Our base is located right across the street from the beach. You will be staying in a shared room with bunk beds with other volunteers. Our house has two bathrooms, a full kitchen, and plenty of space to relax after work. We provide a mattress, pillow, and duvet blanket, but please bring a single fitted sheet. The properties we are working on are roughly 30 minutes from our base. We leave base around 7:30am and return to base around 4:30pm. After the afternoon meeting at 5:15pm, you'll have the rest of day off to explore the town, head to the pub, or go for a surf.

It's worth knowing this is a particularly beautiful part of Australia with amazing local beaches, pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as plenty national parks. The historic heritage village of Tilba Tilba is also not far away, with a range of boutique shops and great pub food and music. Transport to these places is easiest by car and car pooling is generally a good option as a good number of volunteers tend to bring their own cars.
