We are located in front of the beach with spectacular views of the ocean and the Ayampe lagoon. With lots of comfortable, shared spaces, this is a home-away-from-home for the traveler looking relish in the beauty, authenticity, and tranquility of the Ecuadorian coast. The three-story house has a shared kitchen, six private rooms with bathrooms en-suite, and two private suites with private kitchens and a terrace. Residents of the hostel often book a room for 2 weeks, but more often than not, they stay for 3 months, or even sometimes for a year (seriously). We often joke with the guests that they come to Ecuador to see the coast, the Galapagos, and the Amazon, but once they come to Ayampe, they simply never leave. Ayampe may be a small town, but it has its own unique charm that seems to entice travelers, surfers, yogis, and artists from all over the world. We often organize group activities, such as snorkeling, hiking, whale-watching (July-November) and even karaoke. Guests share their cultures over grilled fish in the fire pit or in the surf line-up and become friends amongst the waves. In Ayampe, we become your home and the guests become your family.

We encourage you to immerse yourself in this small, coastal beach town where you can practice your Spanish with locals or take formal Spanish courses, where you can surf twice a day or on lazy days swing in a hammock while watching epic sunsets and drinking a fresh coco, or fish for shrimps in the nearby river and eat bananas that actually taste like bananas, and where you can decompress and leave your stress behind at daily yoga. But most of all, we encourage you to soak up inspiration from the beauty that surrounds you here.

*️️️️️️*️️️️️️ Currently Looking for a yoga teacher to start March 1, 2020 *️️️️*️️️️

We are always looking for Yoga Teacher volunteers throughout the year to help us with the following:

    1. Yoga Classes:
We offer yoga classes for our guests year round. This volunteer work includes teaching yoga classes 4 days per week. In exchange for the yoga classes, we provide free accommodation in one of our five rooms (~ 4 hours of work/week)

    2. Help in the Hostel when we are unable to be in the hostel:
In addition to teaching the yoga classes, we would like our volunteers to help us in the hostel a bit. As we do not live in the hostel (but NEXT door to), we prefer to always have a set of “eyes” in the hostel to oversee the guests or any problems that may arise. This includes welcoming the guests, giving them tips of things to do or where to eat, collecting payments (if we are not able to), answering any guest questions, etc. Additionally, we prefer to have more pro-active volunteers, by this we mean, if the kitchen lacks dish washing soap to put more soap in the kitchen, if guests need extra towels to give them extra towels, if there is a leak to clean up the water and notify one of us, if a light bulb is out in a guest´s room to replace the light bulb, if there are lots of mosquito after heavy rain to burn palo santo, etc.

Additionally, we would like to clarify that while this is volunteering, it is STILL a vacation for you. We want you to have fun, go surfing, travel, play, explore, enjoy life, etc!! This job is not, by any means, one that you may never leave the hostel. More than anything your presence means a lot to our guests, and to us, as any extra set of eyes, comfort, and help. We are normally at the hostel interacting with our guests as well, but at times we must go to the city or take a small vacation ourselves. We always make sure to help and support our volunteers, so this is not a job that you will be doing alone. (~ 2 hours of work/per day)

Between the yoga classes and helping in the hostel, it is a max of 14 hours of work per week in exchange for free accommodation. Please note that since we are a long-term hostel, we do not have guests coming and going very often. Normally, we have guests that stay for at least 1 month, so attending to our guests is not a huge part of the work at our hostel. The most important role you have is to teach the yoga classes and to have someone in the hostel who are an extra set of eyes for us.

    - We only accept volunteers that can stay a minimum of 1 month, ideally for 3 months. If you want to volunteer for 6 months or more, that would be awesome too!

    - When applying, please send us your facebook and/or instagram; this helps us get a better idea of who you are :-)

    - Please, if you are not a yoga teacher, do not apply to this position. We receive many inquiries; however, we only accept yoga teacher volunteers. We are not in need of any other kinds of volunteers at this time. We hope you can understand and thank you in advance!

    Surfing
Ayampe is well-known with surfers for its consistent break. It's hardly ever crowded so often you feel like you're the only one out on the water. The waves are here all year round, but the cleanest season is from November to February. If you are interested in learning to surf, you can take surfing lessons or rent a board when you arrive. The best part about Ayampe is that is the perfect beach for both beginners and pros alike. Besides the Ayampe beach break, you also have 3 other point breaks and 3 other beach breaks to surf that are within 30 minutes north or south of Ayampe.

    Yoga, Meditation, and Massage
Get your om one with 60-90 minute yoga classes and sometimes we offer rooftop, sunset meditation. Additionally, we host at least one yoga or massage retreat per year, such as an ashtanga yoga retreat and a thai massage course. You can also get a 90 minute massage or reiki session from a local who studied in Hawaii, Thailand, and India. She specializes in Crystal Therapy, Lomi Lomi Massage, Hot Stone Massage, Traditional Thai Massage, and Ayurveda Therapies.

    Hiking & the River
Follow the river or head into the jungle via the three well-known trails that originate from Ayampe. If you prefer to stay along the beach, a walk at low tide around the point will take you to the "Heart of Ayampe", full of tide pools and cool rocks. Or walk the other direction where the river meets the ocean and relish in the beauty of the lush, jungle covered mountains as a backdrop to the calm, flowing river where you can swim. You can even stand-up-paddle board in the river with amazing birds flying above you, horses surrounding you, and dogs taking a dip too.
    Horseback Riding
Whether you're a novice or an experienced equestrian, you can enjoy rides by the beach or along the Ayampe River.

    Spanish Lessons
Dive into a foreign language and get to know the locals with one-on-one lessons.

    Whale Watching
Every year between June and October, the humpback whales of the Antarctic migrate to the coast of Ecuador for breeding. You can take many tours from Puerto Lopez (15 mins away) to see these majestic creatures, or visit the Isla de La Plata for hiking, bird watching, and snorkeling as well.

    Isla de la Plata
Isla de la Plata is a 1 hour boat ride from the coast of Puerto Lopez. It is known as the “poor man’s Galapagos” and is home a variety of bird species including the blue footed boobies, red footed boobies, the Nazca boobies, waved albatrosses, frigate birds, red-billed tropicbirds. A basic snorkel tour at the island costs $30-40 depending on if it is the high or low season and it includes snacks, lunch, snorkeling, and a hiking tour of the island. Whales, dolphins, sea lions, turtles, and manta rays are often spotted during the boat ride to and around the island. Or you can book a diving tour for $130-150 where you can dive with a variety of sea life, but it is the most famous for its manta rays as big as or bigger than a truck – seriously they are huge here!

    Islote Los Ahorcados
The famous two islands that are in about every epic Ayampe sunset picture are called Islote Los Ahorcados; these islands are about 3 km from the beach or about 30 minutes by kayak. When you arrive to the islands you can snorkel, spearfish, and even climb to the top of the islands. Be sure to relish in the views of Ayampe and its lush, jungle filled mountains.

    Aguas Blancas
Aguas Blancas is a community located about 20 minutes from Ayampe in Machalilla National Park. There is a $5 entry fee which includes a small tour of the museum, archeological sites from over 500 years ago, a brief walk through the community, and finishes at a sulphur lagoon where you can enjoy a relaxing, youth reviving mud bath and massage. The massage is an additional cost.

    Restaurants and Food
In Ayampe, there are 6 restaurants offering a variety of foods: homemade Italian pizza and pasta, a variety of fish dishes, fish burgers, typical Ecuadorian dishes, Colombian arepas, sandwiches, steaks, etc. Additionally there are 4 cafes offering: a fresh salad bar, vegetarian dishes, smoothies, granola bars, homemade ice cream, coffee, chocolates, baked goods and cakes, etc. There is one small tienda in the town that serves as a small `grocery ´store where you can buy all your basic necessities to cook. The store sells fruits, veggies, pasta, drinks, alcohol, various snacks, spices, etc. There are few places in town to buy fresh coconuts to drink. Plus local vendors come daily in trucks selling fruit and veggies as well as local fishermen selling fresh caught fish, shrimp, and calamari. A 15 minute bus ride along the coast will take you to a proper grocery store and the fish market in Puerto Lopez.
