Our charity was founded to bring play and education to children living in informal refugee camps. Our team of volunteers run sessions 6 days a week (everyone gets 2 days off). These sessions include play, education, craft, sport, drama and more. Our service provides children with a space in which to feel safe, learn new skills, feel a sense of autonomy and individuality, make friends and escape into their imagination. In turn, this helps to mitigate some of the toxic stress they continue to experience living in such a hostile environment.
Despite being a year and a half old, we have already seen the positive effects of our service and we continue to go from strength-to-strength. It is an exciting time to be joining our hardworking and friendly team as we continue to grow, improve and consolidate our project. Each of our volunteers shapes our service - it is a space in which all opinions are valued and welcomed.
It is not only an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of these wonderful children but also develop your skills too. Facing new challenges every day and working as part of a close-knit team means every team member develops keen problem solving, leadership and teamwork skills. Many volunteers help with the running of the charity such as finance management, fundraising or social media, depending on their interests.
Successful applicants will live and work with our wonderful close-knit volunteer team. We spend the mornings resourcing, planning and packing for sessions. We head out in the afternoon to conduct sessions. We are lucky enough to work alongside some other organisations in Calais and are part of a fantastic community of volunteers.
Most of our team live in our house just outside of Calais, about a 20-minute drive.
It is a large house with 4 bedroom house with 2 living rooms, 2 kitchens, 2 bathrooms, one washing machine and a big garden. It is a lovely, cosy home! Dinners are usually shared with the team and we all contribute to cleaning and maintaining the house. Where we live is a little isolated- there are no bus routes close to us and we rely on the van to get us into work. The closest town is Audruicq (about 5 minutes Drive and 15 min by bike), although it's a small town, there is more bus and a train station there.
Although there is plenty of space in the house and we respect each other's intimacy, it is a very social house and you will be living with up to 9 other volunteers and sharing a bedroom with 1 to 3 persons. For these reasons, volunteers are free to choose to live elsewhere during their time, however by doing so, they will have to cover their own housing cost and we won't be able to help with that.
Lunch is provided 5 days/week
