Sammy stayed with us for over two weeks in March to help on our small farm. She was a great help with the sheep, who were lambing during her stay. She checked , counted and fed them several times a day and assisted with preparing the lambing pens, bottles and food. Sammy had previous experience in farm work and was familiar with sheep. … read more good knowledge of plants and herbs and was interested in alternative non dig gardening .
Sammy prepared the vegetable beds for sowing and planting. She processed raw sheep wool from washing, carding, spinning to dyeing the spun skeins with natural plants and flowers, which we both enjoyed very much. Sammy was interested in the scenery around our farm and went on a few excursions by bicycle. She visited a few prehistoric burial sites and swam in the Atlantic ocean. She also joined me in some drawing sessions which was very enjoyable.
Sammy gave us an insight in the way of life in New Mexico, which we knew little about. Her stay with us was very much appreciated, she is a fascinating person, very independent with a positive outlook on life , exploring all her passions and interests.
We wish her much happiness and good luck in her future travels.

Lori, stayed with us for over two weeks in March, which was in the midst of our sheep lambing and our vegetable garden requiring final preparations for the growing season. Lori stayed on with Enda, when I (Ria) had to go abroad.
A day after her arrival, Lori helped clear a shed to get it ready for lambing, she dug and weeded the garden and
… read more planted potatoes and onion sets. She helped with housework, cooking and hoovering. Lori is a hard worker and a quick learner. After a few days she assumed full responsibility for feeding the sheep and lambs in the various fields and she kept a close eye on the sheep yet to lamb. Lori's work was beyond all our expectations, she was eager to help with any tasks and very happy when finished to read or study for her course. Lori is a great person for conversations,
we had lots of fun and laughed plenty. Lori, joined me in some drawing sessions, which she thoroughly enjoyed and showed her talent for art. Lori, staying on with Enda, when I had to go abroad, was really helpful to enable Enda to continue with his studies.
Lori is an independent young woman, who is courageous, funny, intelligent and very capable. We feel lucky to have met her,especially at this busy time for us, on and off the farm. Thank you Lori, we might meet you again some time.

Kaori stayed with us for three weeks in October. She is a very kind, quiet, unassuming person with many skills. Kaori helped weeding the vegetable garden and pruning fruit bushes. She has an excellent knowledge of gardening, especially growing fruit and vegetables. She assisted with moving sheep and cows to different pastures and also helped
… read more around the house. Kaori’s primary interest is food, and we experienced her delicious meals, which she cooked with a Japanese twist. The sushi she prepared was exquisite! We gathered berries from the hedgerows and made chutney, jam, marmalade and pickles. Kaori always was eager to help and often asked if she could do more. She helped collect seaweed from the seashore to be used as fertiliser for the raised beds. Kaori enjoyed these trips to the beach, where she used the opportunity to swim in the sea. She loved walking and hiking and managed to navigate the countryside without any difficulty. Kaori learned to card wool and knitted a scarf for herself of hand-spun and dyed Irish sheep wool. She was very pleasant easy company, we shared many stories and had good fun together. It was a privilege to have Kaori share our home.
We learned about Japanese culture, food and Kaori’s life in Japan, which is fascinating. She is a remarkable woman with great courage!

The three weeks I spent at Ria & Enda's house was an unforgettable and wonderful stay. Staying in their lovely thatched cottage was like being in a storybook. The task was varied each day, not hard at all, and I enjoyed every help as if I was having a new experience rather than working! I helped with the gardening, including weeding and pruning,
… read more food preserving, collecting seaweeds for use in their garden, counting the sheep and moving them to different pastures. Ria and I picked elderberries and rosehips on our walks and made jams and made chutney from the Hawthorne in the garden. We often cooked together, baked soda bread and enjoyed good meals and exchanging recipes. She also taught me wool dyeing with wild plants, spinning, carding, and knitting, and one of the highlight was that I tried knitting neck warmers with their wools for myself!!
There are many beautiful places around the area for walking and hiking. Ria and Enda were very helpful, always made sure if I was having a good time and were willing to give me a lift to the places I wanted to go. We talked a lot about each other's culture and I really enjoyed spending peaceful days with them. It was also great to even get a chance to meet their children and friends, all very lovely people.

… read more Benbulben mountain, while weeding and harvesting in the garden, helping to catch runaway sheep, building the raised bed, and spinning wool. We learned something new every day and could use the free time to advance our academic and artistic projects. You were so helpful and generous in all possible ways - from showing us the area to any possible support for Myriam 's concerts. We are deeply grateful for the time with you, on your peaceful little farm. It was not easy to leave and we still cherish many magical memories. You are beautiful souls and we hope to see you again one day soon. Surely we will!

Our first experience of workawayers was magical and inspiring. Myriam and Malte stayed for three weeks in September. They are a fascinating couple, extremely helpful, have unique skills and use their initiatives. Myriam and Malte assisted with grouping and treating the sheep on the farm, weeding and harvesting in the garden, gathering seaweed,
… read more foraging for berries and plants for jam making and wool dyeing. Myriam is very creative and has excellent improvisation skills. Both were eager to learn, and during their stay, Myriam processed sheep wool from raw fleece to carding, spinning, and dyeing with natural materials to knit a beautiful garment. Malte and Myriam carefully designed and made a raised herb box from timber and other materials available on the farm, as well as helping with making timber window frames for a small building project. A deep respect for the environment guided all their work on our farm. Malte surprised us with delicious salads; both were skilled cooks and transformed our cooking habits, for which we are really grateful. Malte made significant progress in his academic work during his stay, while Myriam, a musician, delighted us with her music and song, which was very special! We enjoyed showing Myriam and Malte some of the local scenic attractions. They both share our love for the sea and enjoyed swimming in the cool Atlantic.
Sharing our home with Myriam and Malte and being in their company was a lovely experience. We would like to wish them well in the future and look forward to meeting them again.
