Description
We fell in love with this traditional Hungarian farm house, a Tanya. As Swiss this arrea held a special fascination for us in the midst of the Hungarian lowlands between the Tisza and the Danube rivers.
We created our self-sufficient home according to traditional construction methods using mud bricks, some recycled and some we made ourselves. Over time, sheep, chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats and goats. Our two lively girls made our family complete. This landscape with its vastness, peace, simplicity -is how we want to live...

It was my first workaway, and what an incredible experience: I stayed three weeks at Birka Farm, taking care of the sheep (beautiful morning walks with the flock to feed the sheep in meadows), building a new clay barn (listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall of course), and helping with all the other tasks of the farm and the house.

This place is full of love and life. The animals are relaxed and happy. The family is warm and friendly-- we laughed so much! One day, I hope to create a life as beautiful as theirs. I am a better person because of this experience. My heart is full.
