Our Farm is a tropical farm and agricultural marketplace located in the exotic rainforests of Maui's northern coast, along the historic Highway.
Our mission is to promote local farmers, agricultural entrepreneurs and support local community. Through our retail farm stand, value added product company and farm to table restaurant we have developed a space dedicated to the community and to the local network of small farmers and ag product suppliers, a place that offers our community and visitors quality local made products and local grown food items made right here .
As a farm we grow a large variety of tropical fruits, nuts, vegetables and exotic spices. As a food business we make a wide assortment of products with locally sourced ingredients, which include hot sauces, candies, preserves, baked goods, ice-cream, farm fresh soda, prepared food items and more. As a destination road side stop for visitors en route to us, we are famous for our award-winning banana breads, our marketplace of ever-expanding variety of locally sourced products and our farm to table food and Pizza operations. Soon we will be launching our farm and garden tours which we plan on beginning to offer to visitors this summer 2019.
Our farm has been welcoming work trade residents since 2006. We host an amazing community of farmers and foodies, working together with purpose in the beautiful rainforests of East Maui. This land seems to attract the most amazing workers and volunteers, we share in wonderful evenings around the fire, music, stories, laughter, and make wonderful communal feasts in our jungle kitchen. We feel blessed to be a part of such an incredible farm doing good things for our local community- and are grateful to all you amazing people out there who have made it just that much more colorful!

Our minimum work stay is 3 months, with the exception of construction workers where we can have shorter term stays. We have quite a few long term residents, at this time many of the farm residents have been here more than a year or two. To keep things interesting for longer term folks we will often work with an individual to create opportunities here on the farm for their personal growth and the farms growth. We have been making our own beer and one resident has converted some of this equipment and her work trade hours to create our own farm soda's, which have been a huge hit here at the stand, another long term resident had her work trade hours moved to research and develop a herbal body line for the farm and we now sell our own healing balms and lip balms. Recently we tasked a couple of long term residents with creating a cookery book mostly using plants we grow here on the farm. We hope that in helping us grow our farm you will find opportunities for your own growth.
Our work-trade program is 25 hours each week in exchange for lodging, laundry facilities, vegetarian food, internet access and farm learning. The rest of the days are yours to learn, play and explore. We always strive to bring people to the farm who contribute to our community life. We've got about 14 people on the farm, though that varies through the seasons.
We focus mostly on baking, making and expanding our products, growing our crops and running our fruit stand and restaurant. We are recruiting folks eager to help in the kitchen, on the land and at our retail outlet. We are also constantly building and are often recruiting folks with construction experience.
We have 8 main workaway focuses
1 - Product shifts begin at 8am, these shifts can be creative but they also require you to have good communication skills and ability to follow procedure for each product you make under the supervision of our product manager. Its a fast paced work environment for people with kitchen experience.
2 - Banana Bread and Dough Making. We have two shifts a week making banana bread batter, where we work in a small group fr or 3 hours and divide the tasks up between the group, for example one person is on mixing butter and sugar and another person is on mixing dry goods. We also have a couple of bun shifts where we make traditional bread rolls for our sandwiches and banh mi buns for the food wagon. These shifts will teach you how to make bread.
3 - Baking - Shifts begin very early, at 5am but the advantage is that work is complete in the morning and you have afternoons free. Our banana bread isn't like making regular bread, there's no yeast, doesn't have to rise or rest and is more like a sweet bread or cake. No prior baking experience is required but preferred, you just need a bakers touch and some of our best bakers never baked before.
4 - Retail shifts - As a retail assistant and representative of Farms you are selling items created here on the farm or made in here where the proceeds go right back into the pockets of local farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. In retail you work as either part of the morning shift crew where we setup and restock our jungle stand and host a lot of locals as the main coffee shop, greet early morning visitors who can enjoy our baked goods and savory breakfast items and entertain large numbers of tour bus customers where we hand out samples and run two busy cash registers that serve farm made soda and ice creams. The afternoon shift is where you work one on one with tourists that stop at our stand. You will also get to meet the local community when working at the stand, its the local marketplace, hangout, meeting place and a local place to eat. You will also make tips. To work the stand we require that you keep a clean store and follow all the set routines and that you engage customers in a way that benefits sales and therefore our farming community, we require that you agree with and understand our farm mission and convey that as a representative of the farm .
5 - Farm Lunch Cook - We have a farm cook position for our residents lunches, this job is a 4 hr shift working in the residents kitchen and utilizing our pantry, dairy and harvest for vegetarian lunches for our residents.
6 - Food wagon - We have just begun our new venture into locally sourced food service, this is a fun new endeavor with which we hope to source far more local produce and utilize the increase in our own vegetable production and harvest.
We have been focused on development of lunch with locally sourced meats and fish and a selection of farm fresh sides.
We hope to soon relaunch our evenings with pizza nights, which were very popular for about 5 years until we had to close the ovens for renovations and construction work over a year ago. We are building the new oven now and hope to relaunch early summer.
Do you have line cook or prep cook experience? Would you be happy to learn how to work our grill and pizza ovens and work to produce our lunch plates and sides in the wagon? Do you feel you have the culinary experience for food service or can help with development of "farm fresh" items for the lunch menu?
7 -Land Crew .....As a homestead we have over the years been very engaged growing fruit and vegetables here in the challenging rainforests of Hawaii. Over time we have learned which cultivars do well in our short days and wet climate and have learned how to nurture the varieties that will grow here.
As our food business grows we are beginning to plan for our larger farm to table food operations which will include commercial vegetable production for food service with intensive low till row cropping. Farm labor involves harvesting, weed management, clearing and planting. We work mostly with hand tools and do not use large machinery.
8 - Construction and Special Projects....Farms was created on bare land with no utilities or structures and over these years we have built everything on the farm. A day is always about building and growing as a farm, a business and a homestead. Current projects range from short term small projects to our larger ongoing projects and will vary from the easy for those eager hammer swingers and construction assistants to those projects that require skilled and professional builders.
As a homestead we are always interested in recruiting folks with construction skills in framing, electrical, plumbing and concrete. We also like to work with artists that can produce sign work for the farm and store, and those with specialized skills in areas such as aqualculture and self sustainability projects.

Our property is 1/2 mile from the black sand beach, secret freshwater pools, and 3 miles before Hana town. We are minutes from waterfalls, freshwater caves, bamboo forests, venus pools, the red sand beach and fantastic surfing beaches.
Most residents begin residency in a tent platform and this is a vital part of the jungle farm experience - we try not to have people live in tents too long but most residents here began life on the farm in a tent and will tell you it is a good way to begin life on the farm. We have cabins and rooms available on a first come basis so over time these do become available, however you may be tenting a while as its hard to project when the next cabin would be available.
We are a food business and homestead and we tend to recruit foodies. One main criteria for accepting people is their interest in healthy local food and a love of cooking. We have found this to be a major strength of our program and encourage residents to enjoy and participate in group meals. We stock a very healthy vegetarian pantry and dairy, though we are not all vegetarians and do occasionally enjoy local caught meats. We have huge edible landscapes and a large vegetable garden just for our own food supply. We grow commercial crops of peppers, passion fruit, banana and papaya for our hot sauces, jams and breads. We also have many fruit trees and interesting crops like coffee, cacao, vanilla, chia, moringa. We encourage residents to learn how to harvest from our landscape, learn how to process coffee and cacao, make your own coconut milk, help with a honey harvest etc. Recently we have made our own flour from sweet potato and coconut in our solar dehydrator. It takes a person with curiosity and who is engaged in learning, to discover how to process and cook what we grow and to really contribute well to communal life and benefit from your experience.
You will not need money to live here on the farm, we eat very well. We also brew our own beer.
