    Description

Welcome to our English project – an inspiring initiative dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged children on the island of Nias. Here's why you should consider becoming a volunteer and joining us in this impactful journey.

In 2014, our founder took the initiative to launch an after-school English program for local village children, most of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds. In the initial years, efforts were fueled by his determination and the occasional help of English-speaking tourists he would meet on the beach. This grassroots approach paved the way for our English project to take root. In 2016, collaborative efforts began to make the project more sustainable, to attract volunteers, online platforms like Workaway were utilised to reach individuals from around the world who were eager to contribute to this cause.

The project began in a simple open-air building that also served as home in Lagundri Bay. Our founder, a dedicated surfer, also rented surfboards and offered volunteer surf lessons at discounted rates to help sustain the project. At its inception, the program lacked sophisticated classroom materials; blackboards for teachers and basic stationery for students were the available tools. However, the project experienced rapid growth, thanks to the combined efforts of and a growing team of volunteers.

The students enrolled in the project exhibit varying levels of English proficiency and are divided into age-appropriate classes. The youngest class ranges from 6 to 12 years old, while the older classes cater to those aged 10 to 15. A significant milestone was achieved when sufficient funds were secured to lease land and build a new, self-contained classroom. Over a span of two years, our founder, and his team, including volunteers, worked diligently to construct this new space. The classroom now boasts desks, whiteboards, and blackboards, with a delightful beachfront playground for the students. Accommodation for volunteers was also erected on-site, adjacent to the classroom, offering picturesque views of the ocean. This achievement represents a significant step toward the realisation of a collective dream.

Our founder hails from the Hiliamaetaniha village, nestled in the heart of South Nias, Indonesia. He is the visionary Founder and Program Director of our English project, strategically positioned on Nias Island, proximate to the captivating Lagundri Bay Beach and Sorake Beach. He initiated a quest to find tourists willing to teach English to these local children. In 2007, our founder materialised his vision by establishing the English School for the children residing in the vicinity of South Nias. As a prospective volunteer, you have the freedom to choose between two accommodation and meal options, both designed to enhance your experience while supporting the project's sustainability. Please request our volunteer information pack for more information. It's important to note that our English project operates without external financial support. The project's growth and development, including the construction of infrastructure and provision of resources, have been made possible through the dedication and contributions of volunteers. The comprehensive package option not only enriches your experience but also helps sustain the project's mission.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to live in a traditional house in a traditional village, a truly authentic cultural experience few foreigners have access to.

In addition to the opportunity to learn about Indonesian languages and culture, volunteers will also be minutes drive from some of the best surf in the world, and close enough to the tourist areas that they can partake in more modern western comforts whenever they feel the need.

There are opportunities for excursions to lesser known areas, such as waterfalls, hidden surf spots, and beautiful beaches. Traditional style BBQs with local families and many other unforgettable cultural opportunities are readily available.

The heart of our English project lies in its commitment to providing local children with valuable English language education. Students enrolled in the program come from diverse backgrounds and exhibit varying levels of English proficiency. The classes are divided into two main age groups: 6-12 years old and 10-15 years old. Our English project operates as an after-school initiative, meaning it complements the students' regular curriculum at their state-run schools. The focus is primarily on teaching English language skills and facilitating basic conversations. As a volunteer, you will be expected to teach a maximum of 2 hours per day, Monday through Friday.

While the project is not a traditional school covering all subjects, your contribution will make a meaningful impact. Your role involves helping students develop their English language abilities, and enhancing their prospects for the future. Given the transient nature of both students and volunteers, this project provides an excellent opportunity to refresh and initiate teaching methodologies.

To maximise the effectiveness of your teaching, bringing your own teaching materials is encouraged. Students currently utilise textbooks and their personal notebooks. Additional resources like whiteboard markers, pens, notebooks, flashcards, and picture books are invaluable. Curriculum materials are available, and you're also encouraged to introduce your creative teaching ideas. The students willingly participate in these classes, exhibiting enthusiasm for learning and interacting with English speakers.

Volunteers also have the option to organise enrichment activities, such as beach clean-ups, art sessions, and yoga. Your unique talents and interests are embraced and can be shared with the children, adding depth and variety to their learning experiences.
