Hi I am Snowy, a 26-year-old female solo traveller from Hong Kong.

I have just come out of a corporate job in the city and am excited to get hands on in touch with nature and explore all the beauty Australia has to offer!

Back home, I am a non-practising Hong Kong lawyer. I help out at my boyfriend's woodworking shop over the weekends, assisting with creation of epoxy and wood furniture and home products, such as tables, benches and serving boards.

I have lived in Hong Kong, Beijing and London throughout my life and speak fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin. I have also learned Spanish, Japanese and Korean at a basic/intermediate level.

I used to have a variety of pets, ranging from dogs, rabbits, turtles, hamsters, chinchillas to fish, and simply love animals.

Happy to help out with cooking, cleaning, chores etc., as long as I'm welcome!

Snowy played a valuable role in our picking berries project..not just picking but also cleaning, weighing and recording assessments. She is a conscientious, intelligent young lady and was a pleasure to have stay with us. Strongly recommended.
Once shown a task she will carry it out perfectly and needs no further supervision.

I stayed with Denise and Howard for 3 weeks from Nov-Dec and learned a lot about the haskap berry and their efforts in this regard. It was really inspiring to hear about how they pioneered the introduction of this berry to Australia from scratch at such a late stage in their lives after having had many different ventures in life. It was so cool to… read more work with all the trial plants and experience the differences between the berries from each plant (which vary immensely, from taste, firmness of skin, size to shape)!

There was another workawayer throughout most of my stay who liked to get up early in the morning to start picking the berries, but Denise/Howard were fine with me getting up later according to my own sleep schedule to start work later. I mainly cleaned, graded, weighed and packed away the berries that had already been picked in the morning, and joined the others picking berries outside in the afternoon. I also helped Denise make her haskap produce (compote and liqueur, which taste great), package haskap plants to be delivered to customers, unload haskap plant deliveries they received from their tissue culture lab, weeding etc. After work was done, I could go walking around or just chill in my own room (with a double bed, drawers and a table). I shared a separate bathroom with the other workawayer. At night, when the skies are clear, the stars are amazing, and little animals often roam around for you to spot - I saw possums, a quoll, possibly an echidna, lots of wallabies/kangaroos/pademelons, and lots of different birds.

Denise cooked basically all our meals for us, I especially loved her homemade coconut sugar ice cream, and the other workawayer and I each did a night where we cooked food from our own cuisines. We both didn't have a car and Denise/Howard were very hospitable in offering to drive us to many different places, to Cygnet on a weekday or to Huonville to catch a bus to Hobart on the weekend, or even came all the way to Hobart to pick us up to go back home and stopped at Mount Wellington on the way back. One of the Sundays they even went out of their way to drive us all the way to Tahune for natural bushwalks, which was really great. They were also just generally very kind in offering help whenever they could, from giving me advice about buying a car, making sure we had enough to eat, sharing life experiences and lots of jokes, to bringing us to 'girls' drinks' with the neighbouring ladies.

I really enjoyed my time there and couldn't believe how quickly the 3 weeks passed by. I would recommend everyone to try this workaway to learn more about their amazing efforts with the amazing haskap berry. I really wish Denise/Howard all the best and hope the haskap berry takes off in Australia very soon!

I stayed at Rene's for 1 week in July and it was a great experience that I would recommend to everyone! It was arranged quite last minute but Rene accepted my enquiry quickly, and it turned out to a great diverse experience that I look back on fondly.

- The family: Rene is a creative, fun and free spirit whose company I really enjoyed. She leads… read more a completely different lifestyle to mine (having come from a big corporate city) and has a lot of encounters, knowledge and perspectives to share that really helped open up my thinking. She is usually at home doing all sorts of different tasks so we could connect from time to time throughout the day. I also met 2 of her daughters which were really nice, kind and fun as well.

- The house: I had my own room in the house with a double bed and shared the bathroom with the daughters and other people staying on the property. The main house is surrounded by lovely trees and bush and there were always lots of birds around. I only managed to come across lemons during my stay, but when the fruit trees fruit, there will be a lot more to enjoy! The nearest shops are around 15mins drive away, and the Maroochy Botanic Gardens are just next door, but I didn't have a car, and worked until sundown (because I started late), so stayed at the main house throughout my stay.

- The work: I helped weed the garden, clean and wash her troopie, and eco print her linen using leaves and natural plant dye (which was really cool). I could sleep in late and started around 10-11 am each day and worked around 5 hours every day. Over the weekend, Rene brought me to attend her 2-day 'weaving is healing' workshop that took place on Bribie Island, where I got to learn how to weave and make string using natural plant fibres, which was again, really cool! After the first day, she drove me around Bribie Island and we did some bushwalking and walks around the foreshore/beach. After the second day, we drove up to a scenic lookout of the Glass House Mountains which was really picturesque. All in all, loads of different experiences that I wouldn't have had elsewhere, plus fun weekend excursions, all of which I'm really grateful for.

- Food: There was food in the kitchen for me to make my own breakfast and lunch (we also went to Woolies one day and I could pick what I wanted), and Rene cooked different colourful (hence nutritious!) dinners every night served with sides of happy dancing and deep conversations!

- Transport: I didn't have a car so Rene picked me up from a nearby bus stop in Sippy Downs, and even kindly drove me to my next workaway when I left, which was around 20mins away!

To conclude, thank you to Rene and family for everything!!

I stayed at Mickey and Steve's farm for 2.5 weeks in June and it was a great experience that I would recommend to everyone! The house is literally in the middle of nowhere, which makes it a genuine off-grid experience where I could enjoy the tranquility, beautiful nature, and a totally different experience overall having come from a very busy… read more cosmopolitan city. My stay taught me to appreciate the finiteness of resources (power and water), and gave me a lovely taste of the simple country life that I had been looking for.

- The hosts: As Mickey and Steve work full time in Brisbane (their home in Brisbane has a separate workaway profile), they are not in this property during the week and only came over on the weekends during my stay. Fortunately, I spent most of my stay with 2 other workawayers with whom I have become great friends with - we tackled all the tasks and learnt new skills together. This meant that we could do as much or as little as we wanted everyday, and took breaks or days off as often as we wanted, as long as the tasks were completed within the week. Both hosts reply very quickly over Whatsapp so it was easy to communicate any issues or questions that we had or to clarify any tasks or plans. Mickey was my main point of contact and she is really nice, gentle and interesting - she has accomplished a lot in her life and it was nice to learn about her and the family through our conversations (albeit not many). Steve is also chatty and generous and cracks dad jokes every now and then. They even accommodated us in their Brisbane home for 2 nights after our farmstay before we moved on to our next plans, and we got to meet the whole family (4 kids), who are all really polite and nice people, so we were very grateful!

- The property: There are 3 bedrooms (4th on the way) so each of us workawayers had our own room. It does get quite cold at night, to which we learnt to make fires in the fireplace and Mickey made sure I had more than enough clothes and blankets to stay warm. There are also relaxing and beautiful walks around the huge 100 acre+ property (we saw a water dragon on one of the walks), and an absolutely amazing night sky where you can see the milky way with your bare eyes (I didn't even see this down in Tassie!) There is no wifi though, and I get spotty reception on Optus in different spots of the house - which is fine considering this is an off-grid experience after all!

- The work: The tasks were not difficult ones at all and left me feeling I could have done more in return for Mickey and Steve's generosity - for the first week, it was a light workload with some general tidying, painting of some doors/walls, looking after the dogs/poultry, and some miscellaneous tasks. We even took a day off on a Thursday to go to a nearby lake recommended by Mickey, which was pristine and enjoyable. We spent the whole second week establishing their permaculture garden, which was a lot more of manual labour - hope this turns out well in the end! On the first weekend, Mickey and Steve brought a whole other workaway family to the property and we all did gardening, bushwalks, BBQs and harvested raw honey straight from the hives together - it was very lively, fun and social, and I may or may not have had too much honey when we did the harvesting! On the second weekend, Steve brought another workawayer over and we again had a BBQ and a bushwalk - it was great to have met a lot of people from all over.

- Food: Mickey stocked the fridge every weekend with a lot of food and even generously asked us what we wanted in particular. They open fire BBQs were also really cool and delicious experiences. I ended up spending a lot of my time throughout the week cooking and baking and it was great.

- Transport: As the property is in the middle of the mountains, the nearest shop/town is 30min away by car and Brisbane is almost 2h away by car, so I had to match up Mickey's visit to the farm to join her drive there, and Steve drove us back to Brisbane when it was time for us to leave. One of the workawayers drove (Mickey kindly lent her car), and even drove to pick the other one up from the nearest town, which is the reason how we managed to get our day off to the nearby lake.

All in all, even though I had not planned to come to this workaway (as I first enquired about their Brisbane home), I'm so glad to have had this experience and would urge everyone to try this kind of peaceful off-grid living at least once in their life!
