There are few things that bring me more happiness than having my hands in my dirt (whether farming, gardening, or just exploring), cooking and sharing a meal with people I love, meeting strangers that soon become friends, being amidst trees, sitting at the top of a mountain and feeling small, and finding the golden parts of each person I meet. I am someone who wants to continually learn new things about myself and my surroundings, and the many humans and non-humans that I come in contact with. I seek to continue to grow and learn new things about myself by looking outward, connecting with new people and places alike. I want to know peoples’ stories and understand how people have come into the ways they exist in the world.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I have a few different skill sets from various experiences. I worked on a farm for a season, as well as in urban garden settings over the last several years, and therefore have experience and knowledge in an agricultural or garden setting. I also have a lot of cooking experience at home; I love learning new styles of cooking, cooking with people or alone, experimenting, etc. Possibly even more so, I love to bake; it is not rare that I will rise at 5 am to finish a batch of bagels in time for a friend’s birthday breakfast. I also absolutely adore spending time with kids. I had lots of babysitting gigs growing up, and was lucky enough to this year serve as a mother’s helper and babysitter for a dear family close to the college I recently graduated from. Getting to be a part of others’ lives and rhythms is something I find immense joy in. I am a recent college graduate who majored in Sociology and Environmental Studies, and therefore am acutely aware of the ways in which social and environmental systems are intertwined and ever influencing one another.

Aside from what I have mentioned above, there are many other small hobbies that I enjoy. I have undertaken learning the guitar this year, which brings me immense amounts of joy. Alongside this, I love music - singing, listening, and learning. I love writing, mostly for myself in my journal and sometimes for others. I am always up for a card game, though you might need to teach me one that strays from the four I’ve got on rotation. I enjoy reading a book, most enjoyed when recommended by someone I admire or love. I am also extremely active; growing up I played every sport and that has led to a desire to move my body in all sorts of ways and explore places through movement (running, biking, hiking, walking, dancing…). And to reiterate a few things from above, I absolutely adore being surrounded by green trees or vast fields, and absolutely love to be in the kitchen whipping up something delicious to share with others. I look forward to getting to know you!

Samantha

- The right girl at the right time!

Samantha was our 6th workawayer in 2023 and stayed here for 3 weeks at the beginning of October.

Samantha was the perfect grand finale of a great 2023 WA-year here in our paradise. Samantha is hard to beat. We laughed and joked so much in the 3 weeks she was here. It was one big jolly… read more joyride.

Samantha helped out with a lot of differet tasks, since October is our lock-down month outside. We were very busy and in a hurry to get all our vegetables out of the garden and into the celler, before the frost and wintertime started. So fun days in the October sun and out in the garden, what more can you wish for, when you are in the best compagny w laughter and jokes flying around? Weeding was on the meny as well, so we could close down the garden. Samantha is NOT affraid of getting down and dirty outside. Getting some extra wood home, was a challenge, but it was a great workout for everyone involved! All our summerfurnitures had to be mooved inside the barn and the greenhouse cleaned and closed down as well.
Flower bulps were planted and will be a sweet reminder of Samantha in the springtime, when they start to pop up around in the garden.
Some days were indoor days, due to the weather. So Samantha cleaned windows and cabinets, helped w cooking dinner and foodpreperation for the winter. Nynne taught her how to make sourdough bread, and a lot of vegan recepies. One fun evening was the challenge of cooking one whole vegetarian meal in the foodprocesser;-) Samantha loved it!
We had to take a trip and was gone for 3 days, and had asked beforehand if Samantha was okay w beeing alone for a few days- No problem! So a bit of housesitting was also on the schedule.
Samantha is very smart w computers and helped out w some picture collages for our WA-profile
All Samantha`s work was done to perfection. This is a person w a very high work ethic, and we only had to show and tell once. Very nice quality!

We both instinctively knew, from the moment we had our usual facetime, that this girl was gonna be one of the great ones. And very soon after her arrival, it was like we had found our missing link-daughter. She melted into this household and was so easy to have AND be around. Liked all the food and tried a lot of new things w a big smile on her face. She` s a natural down-to earth-person, with a very special gift to make everybody feel as good and comfortable as possible in her company. She just makes everybody look and feel their best and shine. Its magic and cant be explained. But if she writes you and asks if you wanna host her, please take her into your home and we are sure you`ll feel that special Sammyspell as well.
Samantha is a sweetheart and the perfect match here. Her always cheerfull mood and positiv atitude, the smile, the hugs and all the jokes. But also deep conversations about the world. We all 3 have a big passion for Marocco, so we exchange travel tips about this wonderful country.
Luckely we all have a big passion for music and we loved to share our music w each other, its such a nice way to communicate and getting to know other people. The endless discussion here always goes around Chris Isaak vs. Eric Clapton- Samantha was trying to stay as nutural as possible..... We learned a lot of great new music from her, and it`s very often played here by now. Soren and Samantha made up their very special turkey talk one day, and could go on for hours. We laughed so hard!
In Samanthas freetime she did trips to Skagen and Aalborg, walked in the forrest or read on her e-book or in Nynnes many cookbooks- thanks to google translate!!
We are sure that a big affection for cats developed here, and think that Samantha will become a fullblown catperson in her future, when she will have her own farm;-)

Sammygirl, it was a gift and a true pleasure to have you in our lifes for 3 weeks. We were in a very stressfull time in our lifes, but you managed to make us laugh and relax and took a lot of stress of our shoulders w your bare presence and hard work. Thanks to you we got a lot done, even thoug we weren`t around as much as we should be. You have a special gift, use it well, and you`ll go as far as you want to! We will never forget you and hope to see you asap, here, there or in Marocco for a tagine in Marrakech- We will miss you until we hug you again!

P.s. Has been sitting here w a pot of tea and some great sammygirl music playing, to write the last review after a summer w 6 wonderful new friends, who came here to stay, learn and helping us out.
-But honestly, our Sammygirl could have stayed as long as she wanted. It was very difficult to let go of the perfect match.....

Where do I begin? I don’t know exactly how to write this review - like many before me - because there are so many small details I wish I could capture for you. But here is my attempt:

Nynne and Søren welcomed me into their lives just a weekend after Kaori, their last workawayer, had left. They did so to accommodate my tight schedule, even amidst… read more a lot of personal events which have made their lives hectic and emotionally draining. Yet, even so, Søren picked me up from the train station in Aalborg and we arrived to Nynne preparing the most delicious dinner - spaghetti with foraged chanterelles from the forest and parsley from the garden. That first dinner was the beginning of a beautiful next three weeks - not nearly long enough. By the end of the first night I felt part of the family. I didn’t really know what that Danish term “hygge” meant until time with these beautiful humans. Endless laughter, warmth from the wood burning stove, kittens sprawled on your lap, music constantly matching the mood of the room, and endless tea times.

As for the “work” part of the workaway, rarely did a day feel like a “workday” at all. Okay, maybe that one day of hauling wood did me in a bit ;) but was only a reason for a bit of laughter, and a sore body (okay Søren, I admit I was a little sore from that day). No two days looked the same on the farm. You could be washing windows, making pesto with Nynne, digging up potatoes, wiping cabinets, baking bread, weeding weeding weeding, hauling wood… But days always begin and end at the same cozy kitchen table, a slow breakfast in the morning and a warm and scrumptious dinner in the evening. Never rushed. There is a different way of being on the farm, different from how I typically function in the world. Lean into it if you are able and lucky enough to spend time here!

The greatest gift that these two give is sharing their entire beings, their entire lives, entire ways of existing with you (and may I say that each one is wonderful) without any filters. I knew from the first facetime that there was something special about these two, but nothing compares to sharing your days alongside them. I am now back at home, and am continually reminded of them in the smallest ways. I now only wash dishes with music, because is anything else acceptable? Søren would say, “of course not.” I find myself smiling when I am trying to rush to cook something. “Are we in any rush to have dinner?” Nynne would ask. These two lead incredibly busy and full lives, yet they prioritize the little things in life that make it a bit sweeter.

Dear Nynne and Søren,

I miss you both already - well truthfully, the moment I got on the train I started to miss you. Thank you for caring for me like I was one of your own children. Nynne, our shared pots of tea, constant giggles, cooking moments, and car conversations. Søren, our dancing and music in the kitchen, turkey talk, table talk, and shared laughter. And the warm hugs from you both. Oh I cannot wait until I can wrap you both up in a hug once again - and this will (must) be soon! I am so lucky to have you as my Danish family now (my true Danish family hehe).
