Hey lovely hosts and travellers :)

I'm Shanky, a 24 year old Chinese-Australian and live in Sydney. I recently left my full-time job at a startup to embark on a period of overseas solo travels, something that I've wanted to do my whole life.

I'm passionate about music and play both the piano and flute and have taught both instruments to young students for the past 8 years. I love teaching and working with kids. I also enjoy attending gigs of all genres and have had some of my favourite past times at concerts. I'm also passionate about the environment and sustainability, largely developed through helping my grandparents out with gardening and growing produce while growing up. I also volunteer at my local city farm.

Other hobbies of mine include hiking. On my days off I love to go on solo hikes, spending time outdoors and enjoying nature. I also love painting (oil painting and watercolours) and often paint artworks for my family and friends for their birthdays. I've also recently picked up crocheting and knitting and am in the middle of knitting myself a sweater!

I've always loved travelling and completely immersing myself in new cultures, different lifestyles and really getting to experience places beyond their attractions. Through my time as a workawayer, I hope to pick up new skills and knowledge, meet a diverse range of people and contribute to meaningful communities and projects in whatever way I can :)

I have always had an interest in learning as much about different cultures as possible from their food to their lifestyles to the way they interact and there's no better way to immerse yourself in a new culture than to learn the language. I've dabbled in learning French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin) and Japanese in the past and have found that the best way to learn is to just converse. I would love to continue learning these languages and pretty much any language!! I also love teaching and studied English Literature at university so would love to teach English as well! Any language exchange opportunities, I am all for :)

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have experience in teaching music and English to students in both a one on one setting as well as in a classroom setting. I taught kids of ages 3 to 12 piano and music appreciation in classes of up to 10 students for 5 years. With kids below the age of 4, many elements of teaching are similar to babysitting as for many of them this is their first time in a classroom, so I have experience in navigating this and also babysat in high school. I also have tutored high school students English and have guided them through their end of schooling exams.

I enjoy cooking and have lived out of home for 3 years so have a multitude of experience for cooking for myself and for my housemates.

Growing up I did a lot of gardening with my grandparents and helped them out with growing their own produce. My favourite thing we did was growing okra plant! I also volunteer at my local city farm at the moment and it's been so lovely meeting like minded people with similar interests to me.

I also love to create art and have taught myself how to paint, draw, knit, crochet, graphic design, video edit, photography and pretty much anything creative. In my most recent job, a large portion of it involved design and video editing so I have large amount of experience there!

I worked for 3 years at a women's health startup and am passionate about all things women's rights, and reproductive rights. Throughout my time I developed a wide range of knowledge about women's health, menstrual health, sexual health and am very passionate about ensuring that all women around the world have access to not only basic healthcare but also education so that they feel empowered and comfortable in their own bodies.

I am also a very creatively driven person so anything creative interests me! I enjoy sketching/doodling, photography and I also really want to get into pottery making. In my downtime I also love to read and this year I have set myself a goal of reading 40 books (currently on 14 so I have a bit to go!)
