Hello! I'm Sam, from Colorado USA, and I'm a lover of all things nature. I currently work as a Restoration Ecologist, supporting the resilience of Colorado's ecosystems and watersheds. We do a wide range of restoration, from putting native seeds in the ground, to chopping down trees and weaving branches as a means of making beaver dams! I'd be happy to chat and provide restoration services on your land if the timing and scale make sense :)

I'm traveling to Costa Rica and Panama in Jan/Feb because I want to immerse myself in new languages (I want to improve my Spanish!), cultures, and approaches to living in harmony with the land. One day I hope to have my own land to create a permaculture homestead, so I've joined Workaway to learn from people who are already living that lifestyle. I'm always looking to improve my gardening, land stewardship and ecological skills, especially during my travels.

I feel that many of us in Western cultures have gotten disconnected from nature, so my lifelong goal is to rebuild my connection through things like foraging, agriculture, herbalism, and simply being outside everyday. Foraging is my favorite activity - I see it as something so deeply ancestral, our food is sacred, its something to treat with intention and honor.

Traveling gives me the chance to learn from others and build meaningful connections along the way.... Ultimately, I want to learn everything I can about creating and maintaining a permaculture system - soil, ecology, water systems, community, all of it! Until I'm able to be a land owner, I'm grateful for the opportunity to help out on other people's projects and learn from their experience!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

- I have a green thumb; I care for 40+ houseplants year round, and I also have a vegetable and herb garden in the summer: eggplant, cabbage, tomatoes, basil, onions, kale etc)
- I love to cook. I enjoy cooking dishes from all different cultures as long as I have a good recipe to follow!
- Fermentation; its possible to ferment anything if you put your mind to it! My favorites to make are kombucha and tepache
- Composting; experience with making compost piles and determining good and bad materials and what ratio of green and brown materials
- I am able to confidently identify the local plants of Colorado USA and I could quickly learn several of the local plants of whatever place I travel to
- I am silly and love to fool around so I think I am a great fit for looking after children. I have worked as a summer camp counselor for 2 summers
- I know how to operate a chainsaw and other hand/power tools; this summer I worked in the mountains thinning the forest to prevent forest fires
