Hi!

My name is Myriam, or Mimi :) I am 24 years old, from Montreal, Quebec and I am a graphic designer who is taking a break from work to travel!

I love spending time in the mountains or by the sea, doing outdoor activities, and I always bring a notebook to draw places I visit and travel to. Drawing, singing and hanging out with friends are some of the things that bring me joy :)

I’m spending 3 months in Europe this fall and I just think meeting people that way is the best way to travel!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I have a degree in graphic design, have done some translation work in the past and have had multiple jobs where I worked with children (ski instructor, summer camp counsellor, etc.).

Having worked in summer camps for about 10 years, I have plenty of leadership, initiative and experience with children. I am a hard worker who can learn pretty much any task you need help with!

For example, this summer, I worked as a sous chef in a kitchen where we would cook for 200 people, 3 times a day. If this is a skill that could be helpful to you, please reach out!

I stayed with Mattia and Chiara for around 3 weeks in October/November 2023.
They are some of the most generous, attentive and caring people I have ever met. They really went out of their way to make me feel welcome in their home.

Whenever they could, they were very eager to show me around their region. They let me try all kinds of italian… read more dishes, and adapted to my gluten-free diet. They always proposed activities and things to do together, consulted me to know what I was most interested in, and gave me a lot of free time to do whatever I wanted on my own as well.

They are located in a rural region of northern Italy. When you step out of their house, you can see the mountains from afar, which makes for truly special morning sunrises and evening sunsets. The region is definitely better traveled by car. If you don't drive or have a license, it may not be the best option for you as the activities you can do around there usually require to drive to get to. I was able to use their electric bike to go to the nearest town (Rivarolo Canavese), and from there you take a train that is about 45 minutes from Torino. Torino in itself is nice (if you like food, history, architecture), but I definitely felt like the best part of my experience was spending time with the family rather than visiting Torino on my own. From there you can get to other cities like Milano or Genova via the Italian railway system that is really great.

If you know what things you want to see and visit, they can definitely help with the planning. I will say that there isn't much to do around their area, but if your plan is to experience the way they live, you will be served. During 3 weeks, I visited farms, zoos, factories, did some hiking, met a lot of their family members, but MOSTLY ate great food (which in my opinion is a pretty great incentive to going given Mattia's chef skills.)

Given the small amount of time we got to spend together, I feel lucky to have gotten to know them that well and to have created a very special bond with both parents and Francesco. He's a passionate bambino, curious and full of wonder. It wasn't hard to find activities or games he would engage with (just try playing with a soccer ball, the rest will follow ;).

Their goal during my stay was to practice their english and expose Francesco to a new language. Even though I understood a little bit of Italian, we were usually very able to understand each other given Chiara's english level and Mattia's willingness to try and learn.

Overall, I strongly recommend this family for a workaway experience because of their eagerness to make it a great exchange on both parts. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcomed, cared for and are just so excited to have you around. Their love for each other, their country and others is undeniable and truly touching.
