Description
I am currently a few months into a year of travel abroad. I have really enjoyed working on small farms and getting to know my hosts and fellow travelers.
I have worked as a software engineer for the past decade, most recently at a recycling automation company. Over the years I've become increasingly disillusioned with "normal" life, and want to spend some time traveling and learning from people who live alternatively.
I am considering relocating away from the United States, and am hoping to fall in love with a location or a lifestyle during my workaway travels. I'm currently thinking that I may want to start a hobby farm and slowly develop land with sustainable/DIY buildings.
I am from rural upstate New York to moderately alternative parents (homeschooling, vegetable gardens, chickens, DIY construction). Since then I've lived in Boston, Massachusetts and most recently Boulder, Colorado. I have traveled the world extensively over the years, although I have never been able to spend as much time exploring as I would have liked due to the time constraints of full time employment.
Over the past 7 years, I have volunteered many of my weekends with a group called Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) and worked on trail construction and maintenance, as well as various habitat restoration and conservation projects. A lot of these projects are very physically demanding, and involve lifting heavy things out in the sun all day. Additionally, I've occasionally served as crew chef for this group, and have successfully cooked delicious meals for groups of 30 people.
I like to spend time outside and do a lot of hiking, biking, camping, backpacking, running and rock climbing.
I am a very social person and love to spend time talking with others about anything and everything. I much prefer deep conversations over small talk. I am super tolerant of differences, and generally easy going.
Most of the people in my life would describe me as reliable. If I say I will do something, I will do it, and do it well.
I love kids and have had the honor of being a "fun uncle" to several of my friends children, and have changed many diapers over the years. I've also had the opportunity to teach basic computer programming to my little sister and several of her friends when they were in middle school.

I learned loads from Nicki and Richard both about NZ reforestation efforts, invasive species, trapping, gardening, sourdough bread baking and rural life in NZ. They've taken on a lot of responsibility with this… read more
The property is very conveniently located on the edge of Violet Town, and it's an easy walk to the train station, cafes, op shop and grocery store. It's really nice to not need a vehicle or to coordinate a pickup.

I am someone who likes to be busy and work hard, so I was happy that there was always lots to do on the farm, without being overwhelming. The hours are quite reasonable (5hr/weekday cooking), and I had plenty of time to relax, read, excercise, and socialize.
