Description
Hi! I'm Luca - I'm a Biology and Earth Sciences student from Leeds, England, but currently studying and living in St Andrews, Scotland. I love camping, backpacking, hiking, running and swimming around Scotland and the North of England, but when I'm stuck indoors I love reading, listening to and playing music, painting/drawing, crocheting and knitting, yoga and cooking.

I'm looking to make the most of the breaks in my university schedule, and I'm currently trying to get out and explore a new place and culture before term begins again at the end of January. I'd really love to get out into the mountains somewhere,and meet some like-minded people, and get involved with whatever projects you're working on, or help out around your house.

I'm a native English speaker and I speak a fair amount of Spanish, but I'm always looking to improve, especially my speaking skills (ropey at best). I have incredibly basic German, Swedish, and Scottish Gaelic, all of which I'd love to learn properly, and I'm open to learning whatever languages you'd be open to teaching !

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
Hi! My name is Luca, I'm originally from Yorkshire, UK, and have spent most of my life hiking, camping, running and swimming around Northern England, Scotland and Wales. I have lots of experience in gardening and looking after animals and I'm quite a practical, handy person, with some experience in woodwork, plastering, basic construction etc. Anything I don't know how to do yet, I'd be happy to try, and I'm a quick learner!

I'm a Biology and Earth Sciences student, so I have good knowledge of ecology, enviornmental science, sustainability and zoology, wherever these might be applicable in your projects!

I have lots of experience working with children, particulalry volunteering as a Scouts leader at home, helping them with sports, arts and crafts, baking, or at camps. I've also taught English as a foreign language to students from Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia and China as an activity leader at a language summer school in Leeds. I'd be happy to babysit or help out with your family if needed.

I have been vegan for 7 years, and was vegetarian for many years before that, so I have lots of experience cooking and baking healthy, vegan food, which I'd be happy to share with you!

I found Sarah and Henry's Workaway at exactly the right time for all of us, and I'm so grateful for my time in Asturias with them. I stayed for nearly two weeks, and as soon as I arrived I immediately felt completely at-ease in their company.

The boys (Sam and Leo) were so funny, sweet, friendly and intelligent that it was a joy to spend time… read more with them. We also had a lot in common (mainly Minecraft) so I got on extremely well with the whole family, and definitely miss being around so many lovely people.

While I was there, I helped out with a range of household, garden, and animal care tasks. Sarah was wonderfully clear about all of the work that needed doing around the property, and then I had a huge amount of freedom to tackle whichever of these jobs I wanted to, and with how to approach them. I ended up chopping wood, attempting to rebuild walls, extending a compost bin and eventually building a tree platform for the boys, alongside helping around the house, spending time with the boys, and taking care of the animals. There's certainly plenty to do, and I had quite a few long days but my work was genuinely appreciated by the family, and it was a pleasure to to see some of their projects come to fruition. The schedule was very flexible dependant upon everybody's energy levels, the weather, and the family's work/school schedules, which helped keep things varied and manageable.

I also explored Nava, Oviedo and Gijón during my stay, and had the opportunity to tag along with the family frequently, including a trip to Gijon's aquarium, taking the boys swimming in Nava, and visiting a Sidrería with Sarah :)

The food was nutritious, varied and delicious, and the family also happily catered to my vegan diet for the duration of my stay, which I really appreciated. I stayed in a lovely private double room adjoining the family bathroom, and Sarah was very mindful of my space during my stay (eg. wouldn't enter my room without asking first) which was very considerate.

I would absolutely recommend a stay here - I had a lovely break in Asturias and would gladly return. This workaway is perfect for people who love DIY, gardening, getting involved, and being outside, and would be especially good if you like animals. I am so grateful for the way this workaway played out on such short notice, and I have lots of fond memories of my time there.
