I am definitely the relaxed type who's always open to discovering new things. I am a civil engineer by profession so some kind of order and routine energizes me. But on the other hand, going out of my comfort zone and finding the balance between routine and new adventures is my life-long happy challenge.

Making the jump from my home country (the Philippines) to Europe even further hastened my love for travel and creating unique experiences. I honestly have never tried WorkAway and probably a bit on the latecomer, but I have always heard amazing and fulfilling things about it, so I finally gave in and would like to experience it myself!

Traveling is obviously nice, but to combine it with supporting someone, a cause, or just anything, sounds fulfilling. Seeing a new place with free accommodation is just the icing on the cake ;)

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
As a civil engineer, I worked in building construction in the past. I mainly did structural (concreting) and architectural works. I have done minor repair works privately like painting, furniture making, tiling, electrical and plumbing activities.

I speak fluent English and German, in addition to my native language Filipino.

I have also been part of our student council in my university so I am experience in organizing events, marketing, publishing newsletter, and overall communicating with all types of people. My Erasmus master program experience have improved this even better - being exposed to people of various nationalities gave me an open mind and a flexible character.

I am very keen on learning new things - so if I can learn more about house construction, interior and exterior design and gardening, that will be a huge plus.

I love biking on my free time and would love the opportunity to cycle around the area I will be doing WorkAway in. I occasionally run as well.

Every now and then, I'd like to try different wine and beers, say during a slow night of board games or just sitting with friends on a pub.

Joseph was with no doubt one of the best volunteers we have hosted and I feel sorry for not writing this review before.
He only stayed for one week because we could not host him longer . In contrast, he was an amazing helper from the very beginning meanwhile other nice volunteers needed a bit more of time to know how we manage our tasks.

So I would like to preface my feedback that this is my first ever WorkAway experience, so anyone's mileage may vary depending on their expectations and experiences.

POSITIVE:
1.) Rosa and Pao are amazing hosts. As a first timer, I was honestly a bit nervous to make the best impression to them and to ensure comfort and safety for myself. But… read more really, from the time we contacted online, Rosa has been very communicative and helpful. The moment I arrived at the pickup location, Rosa made sure that she can pick me up on-time.

2.) The work itself isn't stressful. For a volunteer work, I find it just a good balance between working and having fun ;) I am not sure if it is a usual work for their volunteers, but at least I had a great opportunity to meet Rosa's students and support them in learning English. It is not as boring as you would think, Rosa is creative in ensuring the students learn English in a fun way. Other than that, some house chores - preparing food, cleaning and tidying up, walking the dogs - must be done (which is of course expected on such WorkAway activity).

3.) The accommodation is also good. I practically have a floor by myself. But I guess if there are more volunteers than one, there is another extra room on the same floor. One can still have the privacy they need and at the same time Rosa and Pao are very open if we want to have a chat, which sometimes turns into a long, interesting discussion about anything!

4.) In connection to 3.), Rosa and Pao are intelligent people. For a couple, they really know some general knowledge, but specifically also about music, language, history, culture, and sometimes also politics. So if you are the type of person who enjoys such exchange, this could be a good avenue to do this. They are also very respectful of each opinion and we managed to have fun and educational discussions over coffee and/or wine.

5.) If you are looking to see a specific town / village in the eyes of a local, this is definitely it. It really is a different kind of "vacation" because you don't see it as a tourist but as a day-to-day resident, away from the busyness and preoccupied nature of the city.

6.) The landscape of the town is just amazing. If you are looking for a place to just "hibernate" or shutdown from the city life, this is it. If you are an outdoor person who likes a nice, easy trail, or a challenging hike, you can find it here. It is very quiet (well I guess aside from the church bells) and form a city-person, it can feel weird at the beginning. But eventually, it is very relaxing. I have a good sleep at their place.

The list can go on, but I believe you get my drift from my writing. Did I already say Rosa and Pao are amazing people?? ;)

NEGATIVE: My stay was too short :( I honestly feel that a longer stay with them would maximize the experience for the amount of things you can discover around the area. So to anyone considering a WorkAway with Rosa and Pao, please consider staying 1,5 to 2 weeks at least! ;)
