Hi everyone! My name is Jemma and I come from Seattle, Washington. I joined Workaway because I am taking a gap year and plan to spend some time traveling and immersing myself in different countries and cultures. I love exploring new places, especially when there are opportunities for outdoor activities. My curiosity about the world and what lies beyond my hometown has motivated me to travel. I enjoy helping people and learning new skills, two things which I hope to do a lot while traveling. The small things in life are what bring me happiness. I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, baking, playing sports, hiking, running, swimming, skiing, biking, camping, walking my dog, playing piano, and traveling.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I am a native English speaker with a high school diploma and a two-year general university degree. I know a little bit of American Sign Language. When at home, I volunteer as an assistant to an English teacher. The classes I help teach are for refugees and immigrants. I love meeting the students, learning about their lives, and helping them learn English. I am very keen to learn new languages and help teach others English if they are interested in learning.

I have experience with customer service and food handling from working at a pizza restaurant for two years. At the restaurant I had a variety of responsibilities including cooking, working the cash register, and helping keep the dining room and kitchen clean. I also have experience working at a child care center. I worked in child care for six months, during which I cared for children between the ages of one and five. I also have lots of pet care experience (mainly with dogs and cats), some house-sitting experience, some gardening experience, and a very minimal amount of construction experience. I enjoy learning new things and would like to expand my skill set to become a more self-reliant person.

I have also had an introduction to farm work through previous Workaway experiences. I worked for three weeks on an organic food farm and a horse farm. While on these farms I learned a little bit about harvesting, planting, and selling various organic vegetables, as well as the basics of looking after a herd of horses and donkeys.
