Kia ora!

I'm a 27-year-old solo traveler from New Zealand, driven by a passion for immersing myself in diverse cultures, histories, languages, and arts. While I spent two years as an electronics/software engineer back home, my true obsessions are music, photography and recently - surfing. Upon my return to my career, I hope to channel my skills into either the renewable energy or waste management sectors.

My journey began in March 2024, and so far I have visited the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, India and Morocco. Along the way, I've discovered that for me the true essence of travel lies in the meaningful connections formed with locals and fellow wanderers. Through WorkAway, I'm eager to delve deeper into these connections and contribute meaningfully to the communities which I encounter. I am also a lover of nature and animals and am eager to immerse myself in natural settings that I can explore.

Thus far I have completed three WorkAways, all based in Vietnam. The first was a position as a teaching assistant for English classes, another volunteering at a hostel and a third volunteering for a vegetable packing business. I am currently completing my fourth WorkAway managing a hostel in the beautiful seaside town of Taghazout, Morocco. I am now searching for a new opportunity in Amsterdam as I plan to arrive there in late December / early January. In addition to my WorkAway experience, I also have previous volunteering and work experience abroad. During a high school service trip to Fiji, I painted schools, assisted in classrooms, and bonded with local students. Later, I spent a year in the UK tutoring primary school students with various learning disabilities, such as ADHD, Dyslexia & Dyspraxia. My duties ranged from academic support to grounds maintenance and kitchen duties.

I grew up in a small seaside town north of New Zealand’s capital city (Wellington) called Waikanae where my roots are firmly planted in its close-knit community. Despite stints in Christchurch and Auckland for university and work, Waikanae remains my anchor. I look forward to sharing the warmth and richness of New Zealand’s culture with my hosts and fellow WorkAwayers, fostering connections through shared experiences and understanding.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering with Honours, equipping me with strong computer and numerical abilities. As part of my engineering studies, I also completed English literature courses, refining my writing and language skills.

I have experience working in construction which provided me with basic handy-man skills. I have experience operating a range of hand-held power tools, and even driving forklifts and rollers. Furthermore, I am a physically fit 27-year-old male, who is more than willing to engage in labor-intensive tasks.

I have completed all grades (1-8) in practical classical piano and would relish the opportunity to tutor a student. I also play the guitar to an intermediate level and enjoy singing!

Finally, I am a sociable and outgoing individual, who finds joy in connecting with and assisting others.

While I am travelling I am keen to improve my skills in the culinary arts. At home, a working 9-5 lifestyle often meant any creativity around evening meals was neglected. For years, I have been wanting to put some time into improving my recipe repertoire and general cooking skills. I would love the opportunity to learn new skills in the kitchen and maybe even a recipe or two from other keen foodies out there!

My time spent with Thủy and her family was very special and is something that I will reflect upon fondly for the rest of my life. During our time together, I learnt many things about Vietnamese culture, tradition, family life, relationships, food, agriculture, business, and anything else you can think of. Thủy lives with her parents and younger… read more brother in a small rural village about 45 minutes inland from Haiphong. Her parents own a business selling wood and other materials used in construction, while Thủy teaches English at the local school. While I originally intended to spend two weeks with Thủy and her family, I ended up extending my stay to three.

During the first week, I, Thủy and two other volunteers, planned and executed an English language and cultural exchange event at Thủy’s school. We created the event program together and submitted a proposal to the school’s headmaster. Two days later, we ran the event, and it was an enormous success! Together, we lead around 80 local kids in English-based games, activities, and songs. It was a lot of fun and afterwards the headmaster presented us with gifts and treated us to a lovely dinner at a local restaurant.

For the remainder of my stay, I assisted Thủy in teaching her school-holiday English classes. These ran most days, with one in the morning between 7am and 9:30am and sometimes another in the afternoon between 2pm and 4:30pm. However, the afternoon’s lessons were often smaller and most of the time my help was not required. In addition, I would (try to) help with preparing meals and doing dishes, and I also had the opportunity to help in the garden. Thủy rents a separate house in the village where she teaches her classes on the ground floor. I stayed upstairs in a big bedroom with a double bed, AC, and a balcony with a lovely view of the surrounding fields. On the ground floor, there is also a bathroom and kitchen for volunteers to use. Additionally, Thủy lent me a bicycle to help me get around the village.

Besides teaching in the classroom, Thủy was kind enough to take me out on a number of day trips to Haiphong and other surrounding places. We ate a LOT of delicious food and visited beautiful natural areas. I also had the pleasure of meeting and sharing meals with her extended family, a lot of whom live in the village and others nearby. Her cousin also took me on an amazing day out to visit his woodwork shop, eat delicious seafood, see stunning cathedrals, and swim at the beach. In the evenings, Thủy and I would often bike around the fields near her house. The sunsets are incredible there, and the air is fresh and sweet with the smell of fruits, vegetables, and herbs growing all around you. Thủy was incredibly generous towards me and always made sure that I was kept comfortable, happy, and entertained.

Sadly, there is a significant disparity in English language proficiency between students in rural schools like the one in Thủy’s village and those in the city. Thủy has made it her personal mission to improve the ability of the students in her village by offering extracurricular lessons and free events in collaboration with local schools. Thủy is hardworking, committed, and infinitely empathetic, devoting her undivided attention to every one of her students. She may not know it, but she is an excellent teacher and a role model in her community. She possesses enormous drive and has overcome many societal obstacles to get to where she is today. I respect her deeply and she has made me ever more aware of the privileges which I have been gifted in my life. I would like to thank her and her family for being so welcoming, caring, and generous. I will miss you all, even the cat. I can never repay you for the experience that you have given me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you!
