Description
Hi! My name is Emily, I am 20 years old and currently taking a gap year to travel the world. I graduated highschool in june 2023, and I am going to study physics at a university in Copenhagen, Denmark in September 2024.

I work as a mentor for two highschoolers and an eighth-grader. I help them with math, chemistry, physics and french. I enjoy helping others and to teach. I also used to work as a gymnastics instructor, where I also got to work with kids and help them learn and grow and I got to bring them a few hours of fun once og twice a week - work I truly enjoy. It motivates me and makes me happy to help others and see them grow and be happy and confident.

I also work as a banquet waiter at the luxury hotel: Hotel d'Angleterre in the center of Copenhagen where I have learned the skills of hospitality and delivering the highest level of service - and always doing so with a smile and warmth that uplifts the guests experiences.

In my free time I enjoy being creative and drawing or painting. I also love getting lost in a good book - both fictional books and non-fictional.

And of course I love to travel - hence my gap year. During my travels I aim to LEARN. I want to experience new things, new foods, new cultures and to meet new people and hear their stories.

I have already been traveling for two months. The first month I spent going to barschool (so I am now a certified bartender, and I already have a little experience behind the bar). The second month I spent traveling around the Philippines.

I have been to beginner Chinese classes, and I would love to learn more. I would also really like to learn basic Tagalog and Spanish. I can help teach English and beginner French, or even a little Danish if anyone should be interested.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I have worked as a gymnastics instructor for two years, and I therefor have experience working with kids and planning, teaching and being the one both parents and kids come to with problems - and then handling them.

I have also been working as a mentor for the past 3,5 years where I have tutored kids from ages 7-17 years old and I have helped with math, chemistry, physics, French, Danish and English.

I have been working as a banquet waiter at the most luxurious hotel in Scandinavia for 1,5 years. So I am used to working with guests and hospitality.

I am a certified bartender, and I have a little experience behind the bar from different events at the hotel, where I worked the bar.

I have also been "the cleaning lady" at home for a few years, so I now how to clean and I will gladly help out cleaning or doing the dishes.

Also, I have moved around a lot during my childhood and gone to international schools and my family loves to travel. So I am used to meeting many different people and cultures, and I am fluent in Danish and English. I also speak French (not completely fluent, but I can keep a conversation). I understand (and speak a little) Norwegian and Swedish.

I love playing card/board games or having a good conversation over a cup of tea or a drink. I like to party, but I also enjoying doing nothing but simply sit and appreciate the world around me.

I like to journal and take at least an hour or two a day for myself to center my energy and reflect upon the day that has passed.

It has become my home away from home and I will miss this place and the people so much!

When I applied for this workaway I thought it would be maintenance of a guesthouse (cleaning etc) and teaching at a school. I did not expect to become part of an amazing community and get all the beautiful memories I got.

I planned to stay for 2 weeks but… read more ended up extending to 3 weeks, and I would have loved to stay longer! During my time we were between 6 and 14 volunteers (people come and go all the time, it is hard but it is also the beauty of the place). Everyday we got up and participated in the morning activity at 8 a.m. (it is the volunteers conducting the classes as well. I did two stretching classes during my stay, and I had a lot of fun with it). At 9.30 there is the morning meeting, where Michal (the manager) let's everyone know what they are doing that day. From 10-12 we "work", but nothing really feels like work here. But the help is mainly art, construction tasks, preparing the class for the school, going to the school or (once a week) cleaning the common areas. Then you have the rest of the day off, and we would go explore the island together. So if you are a solo traveler like me, this is the perfect way to share all your experiences with beautiful people. Also, since people arrive at different times, there will always be someone who knows the island, and you easily get to see the absolute best of Siquijor without going through the boring part of planning. And Siquijor is truly a magical island!

Going to the school is also a great experience! The kids are adorable and so enthusiastic to learn. You will be two volunteers alone with the kids, so you can do what ever you want with it, and I found me times at the school very special.

Almost every single day we go watch the sunset, and it is not a lie, that Siquijor has some of the best sunsets in the world. After sunset there is the afternoon activity at 6.30 pm where it is mainly our creative sides that are displayed, and at 7.30 there is the communal dinner.

I am a creative soul, and being here really enhanced that. It is a place that nurtures creativity both with art and music, and I enjoyed having the time to do art.

Apart from the amazing community with the other volunteers, there's also the staff members working the kitchen, reception and construction work. They are incredibly kind, and I got really close with some of them. They invited me to fiestas, their birthdays and their homes and we went partying and to a concert together. They are fun and you get to see the Filipino culture up close, which is what traveling is all about for me.

It is hard leaving, but I would recommend anyone this experience!
