  • Description

I am an energetic hard-worker with a positive attitude. I am motivated by my passions which include social justice, the environment, spiritual exploration, green building, organic gardening, permaculture and intentional communities. I enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, swimming, singing, reading, hanging out with friends and working with my hands.

In January of 2019 I completed a month-long earthship academy in Uruguay through Michael Reynolds' Earthship Biotecture. I lived out of a tent on the construction site, and through a combination of lectures and practical experience I learned the fundamentals of earthship construction. I would like to build on this experience and expand my knowledge of alternative and natural building techniques – particularly cob, straw bale, adobe and bamboo. For the first 14 months of the pandemic I lived on the island of Kauai where I worked on a series of organic farms. I would also like to build on these experiences to deepen my knowledge of organic farming and permaculture techniques.

My long-term vision is to live and work as part of an intentional community. To that end, I seek workaway opportunities at eco-villages and other intentional communities and/or projects that feature natural building and permaculture.

I studied Spanish in college, and I received a scholarship to study Mexican Culture and Spanish language in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico while I was at UNLV. I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries (Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, Cuba), and with immersion my ability to communicate in Spanish comes back quickly. I am also interested in improving my Spanish through classes and conversation.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have a wide range of abilities and experiences that include everything from administrative and computer skills to construction, gardening and landscaping. I have design skills, management experience and a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of live performance and arts management.

I spent 14 months of the Covid-19 pandemic living and working on a series of organic farms and properties on the island of Kauai. I not only enjoyed the physical nature of the work, I thrived! Work included planting, harvesting, mulching, weeding, pruning and constructing a 40'x20' greenhouse. I also worked as a caretaker on a stunning 5-acre property and cleaned the owner's house once a week, worked as an assistant for a master landscaper and had my own landscaping clients.

I also have some light carpentry and construction experience. In addition to years of small renovation projects on my own homes and apartments, I completed a month-long Earthship Academy in Uruguay through Michael Reynolds' Earthship Biotecture. (Reynolds is the inventor of the earthship.) I also volunteered on earthship builds in Puerto Rico and Taos, NM. I have limited experience working with cob, but I am keen to learn more about natural building techniques.

In addition to growing and building, I have a long history as an entrepreneur in the arts and an administrator in the nonprofit and education sectors. For 15 years I worked for myself in the field of live performance as a curator, producer, nightlife promoter and artist manager. My work was recognized with a fellowship from the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City; presented at venues including Joe's Pub, BAM, SFMOMA, REDCAT and The Southbank Centre; and featured in publications including the New York Times, New Yorker, ART Forum, LA Times, Time Out New York, Time Out London and the San Francisco Chronicle. I twice served as the Festival Director for HOT! Festival at Dixon Place in New York, the oldest continually running festival of queer performance in the world.

I have also worked in development, writing and/or collaborating on successfully funded grant proposals to Pew Charitable Trusts, NEA, the William Penn Foundation and others. I worked as the assistant to Lily Yeh, a renowned visual artist and community builder, at The Village of Arts and Humanities in North Philadelphia where I also served as the lead organizer on a major community-based redevelopment project.

I have a deep interest in intentional communities. My undergraduate thesis was on Movement for a New Society, a collective based in West Philadelphia in the 1970's that drew people from around the country and the world for social justice trainings around race, peace, the environment and feminist issues. I have had many experiences living in community, and my long-term goal is to find (or develop) an intentional community that I can call my forever home.

"Creating space" is a thread that connects many of my disparate endeavors. Whether creating spaces where communities can gather (through my work as an event producer and downtown impresario) or creating physical spaces that are welcoming and inviting (numerous apartments, offices, houses, gardens, etc.), I have spent much of my life creating space. This experience runs parallel to my inherent ability to connect people. Long before "networking" was a buzzword friends and colleagues referred to me as "a connector." Ultimately I'd like to be part of a community that connects spirituality, social justice and the arts.
