Hey there!

My name is Johanna, i'm 21 years old and I'm from Germany.
I've been travelling around for a bit now and enjoyed it a lot. I volunteered in hostels, dog shelters, families and my last big project was volunteering in the Philippines for a charity. We built a school using bamboo-cement-technology. I loved getting involved in physical labor and learning new skills.

Besides that, I love meeting new people from different backgrounds, experiences and countries. It's great listening to their stories and sharing mine as well.

Back in Germany, I love going to concerts, record shops and on long walks in the forest. I also adore dogs :))

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I already worked in several service jobs, mostly Cafés. So I know how to deal with customers, serve tables and obviously do the dishes, as well as setting up for the day and cleaning up afterwards.

Before I started travelling, I worked in an assisted living for old people. I was responsible for preparing their meals, as well as cleaning their appartments once a week. Doing the food shopping for the next week was also one of my tasks. It taught me to assess how much food would be needed, so as little as possible would go to waste.
I also helped with small tasks that were usually for the nurses, such as feeding people or helping them go to the toilet.

During my travels I stayed in a dog shelter, so I have some experience with dogs, especially with cleaning their shit ;), now. But I also know how to give them all the love - one other volunteer told me, he had never met someone that was petting dogs for so long at one time before.

I also worked in hostels, so making beds and cleaning rooms is pretty much second nature for me now. Same goes for socializing with guests.

I really enjoy cooking and baking, so if you are looking for someone to help with preparing/ cutting ingredients or being responsible for the whole meal: I might just be your person :)

Also worked in construction for a bit - it was lots of fun and I'd love to learn more skills in that field!

I was supposed to stay for a week here in the cafe. But I had such a good time, that I asked to extend. Sadly I couldn't, since there was a new volunteer supposed to arrive shortly after. In the end I could stay on a folding bed in the dorm though!

Johanna is a very pleasent person, easygoing and very friendly.
As a volunteer we found her trusthworthy, respectful and hardworking. She spent a lot of time with the dogs, even when not on shift.

As for many others, this shelter was my first experience with workaway and I am incredibly happy about that. I spend around 6 weeks there but it felt like no time had passed at all.
The work might be a bit exhausting at first, especially if you are not used to do physical work. But you get used to it very quick and the hours you have to work are… read more very fair :)
There are two shifts: morning and afternoon shift. The morning shift is mostly about cleaning the dogs' cages but you will also have lots of time to cuddle the dogs if you want to. I mostly did the afternoon shift because I loved it. You clean as well but you also get to walk dogs up the hill behind the shelter, which was always my favorite part. If you like one shift better than the other, you can always tell the team and they will try to include your preferences when they are making the schedule.
They also offer everything you need for a comfortable stay. There even is a wardrobe full of work clothes you can choose from so your own stuff doesn't get dirty.
The truly best thing are the dogs though. You get to meet so many of them and you can spend as much time with them as you want. On my days off, I loved just grabbing a random dog to take on a nice long walk. The area surrounding the shelter is amazing for this. I think the closest beach is like a 30-40min walk away and it truly is beautiful. Especially when you see how happy the dogs get about going on those walks. And if you are not in the mood for walking, you can always just go sit in a dog's cage and spend time with them.
There are also bikes at the shelter you can borrow if you want to go further than walking distance. So lots of possibilities for you to spend your time off.
Of course working in a dog shelter can be disgusting at times, but if you are there for the right reasons (the dogs) you won't care because they are just too cute. Also you better not be scared of rats because there are lots of them. Sometimes there may even be a dog proudly gifting a dead one to you ;)
You have to be prepared to take on a lot of responsibility too. You are taking care of dogs that may not have the best experiences with people and/ or other dogs. They may be shy or scared at first but give them some time and love and they will give you the same back.
The only bad thing about this place I encountered during my stay there, was actually leaving the shelter and dogs behind to continue my travels. So if you get the chance to go there for a bit, definitely take it. If you love dogs and being active, it's the perfect place to be. Also everyone I met is very welcoming, the other volunteers as well as the core team of people.
