In high school I took Spanish classes and have done some travel in the past; however, when I entered the workforce I saw how important being able to communicate with people was for my work. I am able to better help those around me when I can speak their language. This is why I want to become more comfortable speaking Spanish and build off of my current skill set. Many of the people I work with in all my jobs, speak Spanish and I want to be able to better connect and serve them.

Hello,
I just graduated college with two bachelors degrees in Social Work and Psychology with a minor in criminology. I have lots of experiences working with people as well as children in many different facets. I have worked at a smoothie shop, a swim school, a summer camp for kids, a shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness, an aquarium, a children's summer camp, and a halfway home for juveniles. I also have volunteer experiences at soup kitchens, mentoring youth, and at animal shelters. I am very outgoing and always excited to learn. I have experience traveling: when I was a teenager I did two exchange programs one with a fellow student in Mexico for a week and another program where I spent two weeks in Costa Rica. Most recently I participated in Semester at Sea where I was exposed to many different living styles, people, and cultures. I want to continue my growth in cultural awareness and competency.

I love anything to do near, in, or on water. I grew up on the ocean so I am a big fan of water sports and a proficient swimmer. One of my favorite jobs in the past was teaching all ages and levels how to swim. For my sport and hobby now, I play underwater hockey o hockey subaquatico y underwater rugby! I also really love art such as painting. In my free time I like to go on spontaneous adventures, learn new things, and enjoy nature. I also really like music. I grew up participating in musicals, so singing acting and dancing. As far as musical instruments go I play trumpet and can play a little piano, guitar, and ukulele. My passion is helping others and one of my loves is to travel and meet new people while seeing new places. I am always up for a new adventure and love to try new things such as food or activities.

I immediately felt welcomed, safe, and at home. Every single one of them Julian, Sebastian, Isabel, and Julianna made me feel at ease and included within their family. The very first weekend I was there they took my to their home in the more secluded and mountainous town of La Mesa where I got to experience what they did to unwind on some weekends… read more and their version of camping. I made great memories in La Mesa as I felt more connected to nature and experienced harvesting mangos and avocados for the first time, we collected an unbelievable amount of aguacates! I really liked that my trip started off by bounding with the family and getting to know all of them on an individual and personnel level. I watched movies with Juliana and taught Sebastian about some music as he brought his ukulele. I really enjoyed Isabel’s cooking and Sebastian was very helpful with correcting my Spanish, Julian was very patient when I was trying to use my Spanish. I also I really enjoyed getting to know the young adults working on this project, Stiven, Miguel, Santiago, Diana, as they became my friends. I saw Diana outside the house, at the cafe she works at in the square, and often spent time with others outside of work such as motorcycle rides, and playing volleyball. These instances allowed me to get to know the people of Bojacá better and the culture. The town itself felt very safe, I felt safe walking through the streets of Bojacá alone and most community members were forgiving with my Spanish skills that are in current development. During the week the town is quiet and is slow paced, most the stores open up on the weekends. I got to know the local shops and stores. My favorite day I spent by myself was when I chose to walk around the town on a Sunday, that is the day, I noticed, the town comes most alive. On Sunday, the streets filled up with people both from Bojacá and other towns as they travel to see the virgin of health. The Church becomes extremely popular on Sundays. It was really nice to see families spending time together as there were circus acts in the square, artist booths, food/dessert stands, people selling ice cream, a small (what I would call a ) carnival buzzing with families that had rides and activities, and the market was open. Occasionally we would go out/to a neighbors house and I had a lot of fun learning how to dance, both Merengue with Sebastian and Salsa with other locals. My favorite memories were getting to travel to other towns and see the beautiful forests that lay in between the towns. We went to a waterfall in San Francisco (which I learned they call a cascada and not what I had thought was called a catarata) I think this was one of my favorite moments. I am really glad I had the opportunity to go on this Saturday trip as we also got to watch local dancing that took place in a square of La Mosquera performed by school children. I learned a lot from this experience, not just about Spanish, or about the individuals I spent time with, but about the Colombian culture. I really like Colombia and my experience here as a whole:- the beautiful nature, extremely kind and welcoming people, the attitude they have on life, the strong importance of the family unit, what they do for fun, how they view friendship, what they find enjoyable and appreciate the small pleasures in life, and where they get their joy. I plan on coming back to Colombia one day, and can hopefully reunite with my host family as well as other friends I made on this journey.
