  • Description

Hi there! I'm Caroline, I'm 29, from Ireland and have lived in Scotland for the last 10 years.

My main aim with workaway is to reconnect with nature and work with my hands after many years of desk work, working remotely and being glued to screens most of the day. I want to work with my hands, work in the land, and work with animals. Growing up I loved being with animals more than people, and I had a pony (April) and a horse (Jaffa) throughout my teens. I am experienced in taking care of and exercising horses. I have ridden on and off in my twenties, and looked after rescue horses, but am really keen to spend more time with horses through workaway. I would love to learn some construction skills, and am happy to garden and work with the land too.

For the last 4 years I've worked in community led conservation - I've been lucky enough to travel a lot for work, including to Tanzania, Brazil, and on a 3 month placement to Kenya. I've loved working with local communities to support them to restore their landscapes.

In my free time I love to write poems and short stories, and I dream of getting published in the future. I also sometimes perform stand up comedy - and dream of pursuing that seriously too. Maybe I'll write a killer show during my workaway?!

As with most people in Scotland - I love to be outdoors! Hiking, camping and swimming outside are when I feel most at peace and connected to the world. I even sea swim throughout the winter here in Scotland - so I am very much looking forward to swimming in warmer oceans!

I also have done many volunteering roles over the years - I currently volunteer with LGBT young people here in Scotland. I've previously volunteered with human rights research organisations, an LGBT health organisation in South Africa and a school for women in Moshi, Tanzania. Each of these experiences has brought something really valuable to my life and I love getting involved in causes beyond my paid work.

I am cheerful and positive and a hard worker. One of my favourite parts of travelling is learning about new people, so I hope to meet many fascinating folks on my workaway journey.

I'd love to improve my French! I lived in Paris for 3 months 10 years ago, and studied French in school, but haven't really used it since then and would love to become more fluent.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Working with horses - I have experience caring for horses, exercising them (lunging & riding), grooming, feeding etc. I had horses between ages 12 and 18 and was responsible for riding them and caring for them. I competed at local / pony club level in eventing and showjumping. In my twenties, I have ridden occasionally and look forward to reconnecting with horses.

Environmental conservation - My work over the last 4 years has focused on enabling community led conservation and restoration throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific.

Management - In my current role I manage the Capacity Development arm of my organisation, manage multiple conservation projects and budgets of up to £600,000. Previously I have worked as a bar manager - in 2018 I managed 11 bars at the Pleasance site at the world's biggest Arts Festival.

Working with young people - I volunteer with an LGBT youth group in Scotland, where I facilitate group activities and discussions. Our work is led by the young people.

Creativity - I regularly perform 5-10 minute sets on the open mic stand up comedy circuit in Edinburgh. I also write poems and short stories for pleasure, and articles for work. I am an excellent editor and a keen writer and really enjoy crafting with words!

Generally outdoorsy - I can build a fire and set up a tent and am always keen to learn more outdoor skills.
