  • Description

I work as a Wildlife Crimes Analyst at C4ADS where I research / investigate illegal wildlife trafficking networks and activity throughout sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia.

With several years of academic and professional experience in wildlife conservation, I am passionate about combatting illegal wildlife trafficking and natural resource exploitation. Academic and professional background in international relations; conservation policy development; human-wildlife conflict solutions; and biodiversity conservation. Geographic focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia with an interest in the convergence between illegal wildlife trafficking and other illicit crimes.

I hold a Master of Science degree in Conservation Science and Policy from the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus in the UK. During my MSc degree, I was part of a National Geographic research project, called Sea to Source. As my part of the project, I used GIS and satellite imagery to locate and count the fishing boats along the Ganges River. The overall aim of this ongoing project is to better understand the scale of plastic pollution stemming from fisheries along the Ganges. My research, combined with that of the Sea to Source group, will lead to the implementation of more sustainable fishing policies and can also be used as a method guideline for other freshwater bodies around the world.

Previously, in the spring and summer of 2021, I worked with the WWF on the Panda Labs Taskforce as a Wildlife Credits Innovation Volunteer. As part of my role with the WWF Wildlife Credit’s team, I supported and helped to validate the Wildlife Credits model in Namibia, Romania, and Kenya. I encouraged conservation performance payment schemes to channel rewards and incentives to community stakeholders at the frontline of conservation. I actively worked and communicated with WWF groups from the Philippines, Netherlands, Hong Kong, UK, Mexico, and Pakistan, who all are developing or managing marine protected areas and sustainable fishing practices. By engaging with these groups, I helped to brainstorm challenges that they face as well as provide research support to their teams and the local communities that they represent.

I previously, while living in Cornwall, UK for 5 years, (before moving to U.S. for work) maintained a 125 square meter allotment plot. Starting out from scratch, I turned this space into a partial nature space/ wildlife corridor, with 2 ponds, fruit and native trees, perennial pollinator plants (such as phacelia, borage, and geum - amongst many others) and partly an organic vegetable garden. I am very interested gaining further skills, knowledge, and experience in permaculture and organic gardening techniques.

I am very much a nature enthusiast and love being outdoors as much as possible. I am an avid hiker, trail runner, surfer, and sea swimmer. I am dedicated to the protection, conservation, and rehabilitation of wildlife and the environment.

During holiday/Paid-time-off from work, I would like to travel and learn more about local cultures, while also participating in work-away experiences where I can spend my time giving back to nature projects and the local environment.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have a Master of Science degree in Conservation Science and Policy.

Through my MSc course, I developed skills in GIS and satellite imagery analysis, researching for and writing a literature review, analyzing data, writing analytical notes, writing the results of research, orally presenting research, as well as gaining a better understanding of the current status of the environment. I learned how to practically collect, analyze, and present statistical data that was gathered from various sources.

While in Kenya on a field research project in January 2020, I monitored, evaluated, and analyzed populations of grazing animals, kept counts of bird species, and learned about the different native and invasive species of plants in the area. I took part in discussions with local community members, wildlife conservancy staff, and government officials, in order to better understand the human-wildlife conflict and problems faced by invasive species, including the water hyacinth that has completely changed the ecosystem of Lake Naivasha.

In addition to expertise in GIS, satellite imagery analytics, Microsoft Suite programs, I also have a practiced knowledge of ‘R’ statistical modelling. I am confident speaking over the phone and am a professional email and postal writer. I am skilled in a variety of writing styles, including but not limited to, scientific research papers, literature reviews, short bios, website articles and blogs, in-depth political and policy research papers, as well as everyday correspondences between colleagues, customers, and suppliers. I take great pride in a job-well-done and thrive working both individually and as part of a team. I am flexible and quick to adapt, as I understand when plans need to be adjusted.

I am incredibly fit and active. I completed the Snowman Trek in 2017 and the GR20 in 2018. I maintain a very healthy lifestyle, and trail-run, surf, and sea swim throughout the year.

I love being outdoors as much as possible and thrive in remote and wild places. I am not fussy, nor do I require luxury accommodation. I thoroughly enjoy food and cooking (and surprising people with how delicious vegan food can be!). After a hard day's work, I love to relax with a book or sit around talking with people. Animals and wildlife conservation is my absolutely passion, so any time I can be helping with animal welfare, I am happy!
